“My husbands 60th birthday”
Reviewed 26 October 2013

We stayed for 1 night on sunday 20th October and went with our daughter and son in law. We had 2 rooms in the courtyard which were full of character and very clean and tidy. We were very pleased with the very helpful staff and service. We took a bottle of champagne and they asked if we would like an ice bucket and glasses. We had a lovely meal in the evening which we all very much enjoyed and ended our evening in the bar relaxing. We would like to thank all of the staff for making our stay so enjoyable. Our only regative was that breakfast was only served untill 9 so maybe that could be exstended untill 10am.

Room Tip: Pick upstairs rooms if you would like character.

Part of a friends walking group we stayed overnight at the the hotel. We started with a friendly welcome, rooms were traditional, cosy and very nice and the evening meal was faultless. Staff all night were very accommodating and friendly. Woke up the next morning to a lovely breakfast. Great place to stay and hopefully will be back next year.

I've noticed people complaining the hotel is too hot I turned the setting down on the radiator seemed to help :) I love this place come every year it's a no frills inn the food was excellent an everyone around me seemed to think the same ! I had a couple of cobwebs on the ceiling which the cleaner quickly sorted ! The rooms are a decent size an beds are huge ! I will continue coming !

We had a fabulous overnight stay in the hotel with a fantastic evening meal which couldn't have been easy as there were 23 of us but the food was presented and tasted lovely the room was lovely and so was the breakfast the next morning, we will definitely go back for another weekend walk and us it as our base.

The staff were also very pleasant and helpful.

Room Tip: They even have rooms for you to stay in if you have a dog which we may use next time.

We had gone to Masham as part of a surprise trip for my boyfriend. I had originally booked into the Bay Horse Inn, just down the road. However after an absolute disaster with their booking system, I went to the Kings Head Hotel, hoping they would have a room for us. The lady at reception was excellent and after I explained what nightmare we had experienced wen trying to check in at the bay horse earlier that day, she was a welcoming and friendly face to set the day back on track. We went to our room which was beautifully decorated and very traditional. We enjoyed a lovely meal at the restaurant downstairs, which was outstanding and definitely worth a visit! After our meal, we returned to our room, where shortly after there was a knock on the door. One of the waitresses had brought a birthday cake for my boyfriend, as they had been informed by another member of staff it was his birthday. We were so touched by such a nice gesture and were pleased that the bay horse didn't have our booking in the end. It was a lovely end to a great day! We will definitely be returning. Thank you!!

Just back from a one night stay at the Kings Head, and read in the Sunday Times that the pub's ultimate owner, Spirit, who own Chef & Brewer, are looking for ways to reduce their £700m debt. It's a no-brainer, if all the other pubs/hotels in the group are heated with such ferocity as this then turning it down a few notches would probably slash that £700 million to small change within a fortnight I reckon. "It's like Hades in here," said my partner, and she normally feels the cold! My heart really went out to the poor lady who was sat next to the toast machine at breakfast in the morning, blimey, this place is hot, REALLY hot. This may sound like levity, but it was so hot that this alone would put me off going ever again. Even in the depths of winter with 2 foot of snow outside. They'd have the fire lit then too, making it even hotter!

Apart from that, It's an old Dales pub/hotel. It's a tiny bit scruffy around the edges. It was probably lovely in it's heyday, full of farmers and damp dogs. The old beams appear to have mostly been boxed in or replaced with new "Chef and Brewer style" beams. In short, we were a bit disappointed, especially for the price, although the service was very good and staff were all very friendly and helpful. Still, we did manage to lose half a stone each!

Note: we were in the main pub, most of the rooms seemed to be "out the back" in a coach-house style arrangement. It may have been a bit cooler out there.
