Best of a bad bunch ?

2.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 14 Mar 2014
We stayed one night as part of a group tour of Vietnam. This hotel stuck out like a sore thumb prior to departure. As we were on a 4.5 star trip this hotel from the outset looked like a disappointment waiting to happen and sadly we were proved right.Nothing wrong with our room(although other complaints were heard in respect to cleanliness of carpets) but food was a different story. We were served as a group with drinks being dispensed via a trolley which went round the table.Beer came by way of a can and glass being placed in front of me.When the can was finished I and others asked for the empty cans to be removed-we gave them to the waiter who promptly put them back in front of us.At this point I thought I had been transported to an Eastern bloc works canteen in the mid 60s.! Breakfast also a disappointment-but perhaps we had been spoiled by the high standard of breakfasts enjoyed elsewhere?.Having said all that if this the only way to enable you to ride elephants at Lac Lake (as mentioned by Philip B)-do visit Buon ma Thout and if you have to stay at this hotel,do.Apparently there are 2 new "5" star hotels being built-if this is true problem solved in the long run.

OK theres not many options in this part of Vietnam but this is the newest and the best. The rooms are very large and very clean but yet again the bed was too frim for my liking. The bathroom was all new and again very clean but be aware that you only get 15mins of hot water and have to let it heat up again before using again so no long hot showers but its not a big thing. The only problem with this hotel is that because of the tiled floors every sound echos. Dont bother going to bed before 10 as the Karoke upstairs is going until then and its not Frank Sinatra I can tell you! Also dont bother using the Massage facility as its just weird! Breakfast was just OK the next morning but nothing to write home about. They also had quite a nice looking pool but it was too breezy to use.

Room tip: All the rooms are new so pretty much the same

Had one night here. Really comfortable and good to get off the tourist trail. Went riding elephants at Lake Lak which was amazing. This was organised at short notice by the hotel so we had a private tour. Guide was ver good. Also took us to coffee plantation and rubber plantation.

This hotel is right in the heart of the city. A close walk to shops, restaurants and a few attractions. Right across the road from a big busy, Christian Church. Just up the road from the Museum too. it is well worth a visit too. Great views from upper floors. We stayed on 9 and had a nice view. The pool is good and clean. Not sure about the sauna and massage. We didn't use either. The gym is no gym, just a couple old treadmills and a weight stack. Don't waste your time.

This hotel was adequate for sure. Not worth $60USD a night though and not what I would call 4 Stars.

Breakfast has nice fruit and fresh watermelon juice. There was an omelets and pho station and typical VN breakfast options.

Room tip: Definitely go to the Museum for an hour just down the road. It was well worth it.

This hotel is owned by Saigon Tourist, the government's big tour agency that handles over 2,000,000 tourists per year, and it seems to have been built primarily to handle large tour groups. It's quite new and modern to the point of being sterile. It is a western style hotel with no Vietnamese ambiance. Big spaces, few people there.

Pros:

Large comfortably furnished rooms

Central location

Friendly staff that tries to please.

Cons:

Breakfast was included but was not very good. There was a large selection, but neither of us (one Vietnamese, one Westerner) found much we liked to eat.

Rooms have very poor lighting. Except for a small desk lamp, all light bulbs were very low wattage and very dim. On the third service call they finally gave us the lamp from the reception desk. If you like to read in the room, find another hotel.

Room tip: Try a room on the north side. South side rooms get strong afternoon sun.

Large room, clean and comfortable. Restaurant is OK. Hotel caters for Vietnamese people. Apart from two men on the first day, we didn't see any other westerners in the hotel or at the hotel restaurant.
Breakfast is typical Asian cuisine. Although, chef made excellent omelets.
Cathedral is opposite and the ringing of bells at 0430 really are a pain!!

Room tip: Not much one can do to escape the cathedral bells. Perhaps a room on the rear of the hotel might help.
