“Superb food and pleasant rustic decor”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 November 2013

This restaurant is in Huby St Leu, which is just outside Hesdin, and appears to be a former farmhouse/ stables. As it was Halloween, the gardens and the dinning room were adorned with fake cobwebs, pumpkins and skeletons etc. However, the large open fireplace, beams and rustic feel of the place was utterly charming. There were four of us dining and we all plumped for the 22 euro three course lunch. I had cod in a cream sauce, followed by Venison in red wine, followed by creme brulee. Each course was absolutely delicious and perfectly cooked. There were only a few other diners, but I would imagine that this place would be very popular in the evening and will be back to experience the food and the ambiance, and the roaring log fire. Our whole bill came to just 120 euros, which included a beer and a glass of wine each and a tip. If you are in the area, give it a try - you wont be disappointed,

“Incredible food in quirky surroundings”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 November 2013

The restaurant is a beautiful old building set in an extremely lush garden which we sat in for our meal on a sunny Sunday afternoon in July.
I opted for the 25 euro set menu and started with the snails in a garlic and parsley butter, the best I've had to date. They were divine. For my main course I had confit duck leg with mushrooms and lardons which came with lots of veg and potato chips cut into perfect little cubes; all incredibly good. Then came the vast cheese board with so many great choices. I ordered the classic creme brulee for dessert but when it was brought to me, I had not one but two! One vanilla and one caramel and both delicious. I'm not sure how I squeezed it all in as the portions were huge. The wine is also very good.
The atmosphere of the place is great. The staff are so warm and welcoming and there is a lovely old Boxer dog wandering around, making friends. The garden and house are full of quirky objects and curiosities which, along with the great, flavoursome food, make the visit unforgettable.

“An unexpected evening of fun.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 November 2013

We visited La Garenne for a mid-week evening meal as a group of 14 celebrating a birthday. After a little confusion regarding booking time (e-mail followed up by phone) we arrived at the agreed time and were shown into a private room for our meal. The decoration was delightfully eccentric (especially as the celebration of Halloween was about to start, and there were false cobwebs and skeletons abounding), with old photos, and a variety of paintings and other art around the walls. The service was gently attentive, we never felt we waited too long between courses, or were being hurried. There was a good choice of food both a la carte and the set menus, and the plates were presented nicely. We all felt the meal had been a good experience and enjoyable. Happy to recommend.

“Utterly charming...”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 October 2013

We had Sunday lunch at La Garenne and it was tricked up with Halloween decor of a most hilarious kind. The welcome and service were excellent with warmth and charm in abundance. We had the €27 menu and all the food was well prepared, delicious and very nicely served. The wine list is comprehensive.

“Deserving of its reputation”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 October 2013

I hesitate before giving La Garenne a 5 rating for fear of raising expectations. The food is very good indeed, but not "excellent". However the slight lack of finesse in some dishes is more than offset by flavour, and generosity of portion. Service is well paced, friendly and utterly charming. The decor has to be seen to be believed but in a very good way. This establishment delights and is confident in what it does and I am utterly confident in return that you will not be disappointed. Overall our meal experience was a very definite 5 and so said all of us.
