“Rural France at its best with fantastic owners!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 July 2014 for a stay in May 2014

Myself, partner and our little girl (who is 3) had a week's stay at this wonderful cottage in the May holidays.

The cottage is located about an hour or so from the EuroTunnel so nice and easy to get to. Set in a peaceful little village called Tortfontaine it is about a 10 minute drive to the nearest town, Hesdin, which has all the amenities you require on a self catering holiday. Supermarkets, restaurants, bakeries, launderette etc. You will certainly need a car when staying at this cottage as Tortfontaine has very little by way of amenities itself.

The cottage itself has been beautifully presented by its fantastic owners. It was just what we, as a small family, were after. The owners have clearly put a lot of love into this cottage and it shows. The bedroom, which consisted of a double bed for us and a single bed for our little girl, was fantastic. Set in the roof of the cottage - it was huge! The beds were very comfy and we had a great nights sleep.

The downstairs consisted of a very well equipped kitchen - and a dishwasher which certainly was a novelty for us! Irene, the owner, had said it was either a dishwasher or washing machine (as not enough room for both) so they had opted for the dishwasher. As a small family we would have preferred a washing machine - but we don't go on holiday to wash our clothes (we take enough to last!) so this by no means is a complaint. There is a local laundrette in Hesdin if you really feel the need to do some washing.

There is a lovely little patio area to the side of the cottage with a BBQ and had the weather been a little better during our stay we would have made good use of it as it was a beautiful setting.

The living room, which is open plan with the kitchen, is very nice and cosy. Comfy chairs, television and enough DVDs to be getting on with if a rainy day should occur.

We had a few rainy days (unfortunately!) but made good use of the local swimming baths and bowling centre which were just on the way into Hesdin.

What can I say about the owners other than fantastic! So helpful - there in the background (as their own home is adjacent to the cottage) but there if you needed them. We really appreciated their local knowledge and made good use of their information.

Overall we had a lovely stay and would recommend this cottage to anyone of our friends. We had a wonderful stay made all the better by Norman and Irene!

“Lovely cottage, peaceful and relaxing”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 June 2014 for a stay in June 2014

This cottage is ideal for a couple who are looking for a relaxing break. You do need a car but driving in France is very easy...there's no traffic...not even on the A16 once you're 10 minutes outside Calais.
You need about €5 for the A16 toll road - you take a ticket as you get on and then pay as you exit so don't leave your Euros in the suitcase in the boot!

The cottage is easy to find with the detailed directions provided by Irene and Norman. Tip - it was easier to use their directions than use the sat-nav to find the cottage! It is set in a rural, peaceful location but less than 10 minutes drive from a lovely little town with shops, a market and everything else you need.

The cottage was clean, and Irene was very welcoming when we arrived.

It is very well-equipped, including towels, tea-towels and bed linen. It is also very comfortable with plenty of seating in the lounge and a comfy bed upstairs. The outdoor space is lovely - your own patio with table, chairs, umbrella and BBQ. It is a real sun trap and ideal for catching some rays with a glass or two and a good book.

There is a fixed stair gate at the top of the staircase in the bedroom if you do have children with you.

The bathroom and WC are downstairs. There was always plenty of hot water and the power shower was superb.

The television has the 5 main UK terrestrial channels, there's a DVD player with some good films, a good selection of books and a box of board games (chess, backgammon, cards etc.).

The fridge has an icebox compartment so ideal for your cool bag ice packs ready to transport that cheese back to the UK!

Irene and Norman are very knowledgeable about the surrounding area and on hand if you have any questions.

I did miss not having WiFi whilst there, for the first 48 hours anyway...but then it was actually quite pleasant...a forced break from the emails and social networks was a blessing in disguise. There is WiFi in all the McD fast food outlets, and in the cafes in the towns if you really can't survive.

I would definitely recommend this cottage but probably to two adults rather than a family.
We had a lovely stay, the weather was great and we came home feeling as though we'd been away from work for a lot longer than just a week :)

“Delightful, well equipped cottage, lovely garden and great walks nearby”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 April 2014 for a stay in March 2014

We were delighted to return to this immaculate cottage this year. Norman and Irene are not only very efficient in organising bookings and sending you information but are also very warm and welcoming and ready to give advice about walks and places to visit should you need this.
The beamed and spacious bedroom is a delight with a most comfortable bed and pretty linen, and downstairs there is a very well equipped kitchen and cosy sitting room. The highlight is the totally charming little garden attached to the cottage with table and chairs to sit and eat outside. A perfect cottage for a couple, though if you had more than one child with you it might feel a bit squashed.
It is wonderful to be able to do long walks directly from the house through woods filled with wood anemones and tracks bordered by swathes of wild flowers.
We do miss having french tv, though all the usual English channels are available, but enjoyed watching some of the DVDs on offer; and if you enjoy reading there are more than enough books available for a fortnight!!

“Overall poor experience”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 April 2014 for a stay in April 2014

Review of cottage

We have stayed in many beautiful places all over the world and only ever outstanding reviews from us. On this occasion, however, our review is poor.

For this property, a 3pm check-in is required, this was not made clear in any correspondence with the Owner, Irene.

The cottage was very cold when we arrived, it had not been heated for a while.

No washing machine, so it is not suitable for long stays with children.

There were too many reminders from the Owner in person, from notes and from a sign in the toilet that a septic tank is in operation, hence not to flush sanitary items. As a 42 year old woman, I certainly do not need to be told this in person by the Owner, it was terribly insulting.

The bath mats were inappropriate, carpet mats ? ,hence unhygienic, proper bath mats should be in place.

The plug socket next to the mirror was dirty, lots of dirt around it. On our penultimate day, we came back to the cottage to find a note written in red, reminding us to check out at 10am, altogether very rude.

The property is advertised on holidaylettings.co.uk at a price of £45 per night, for us, for the Easter weekend of 2014, this price was put up to £75 per night.

On vacating the property, there were instructions to remove the bedding, empty the bins, and so forth. Surely, Cleaners should do this at £75 per night?

We rate the overall experience as 2 star, we were expecting a 5 star rating, so very disappointing. Oh, by the way, make sure you have 100 Euros as an insurance deposit in cash for the Owners. Hence a 66% deposit, very steep !

Very small fridge, not suitable for self catering with children for more than a few days.

No directions were given to the property, so thank goodness for sat nav.

No full length mirror, or UK adapters, toaster too small, only two pieces of toast at a time, not suitable for families. Very flimsy toaster.

Upstairs spoilt by laminate flooring, should be oak.

Just to say that the Owners Spouse, Norman was helpful. Irene needs to learn about customer service and understand that in the hospitality sector, people want to enjoy a relaxing stay not to be presented with a set of rules, in a Head Teacher sort of manor.

What is also strange, is that there is a note to inform that the cesspit is regularly inspected. My Hubby could only presume that Norman is sent on a daily basis to check. Beware, if a contraband item is discovered, your deposit will be reduced!

At not ime in this review did they state they left the premises without saying and left it in a disgusting condition. This has been over looked so i will address the issues that have been raised and add our own comments.we normaly only have weekly rentals but went out of our way to accomadate this family. What we expected on contacting them on return to uk was an appology for their behaviour, not a bad review.

All accomadation has an arrival and departure time. Most times are 3-4pm arrival and 10 am departure.they do not add we made the cottage avalible for them for 1.30pm.
Be it a 5 star hotel or a small gite in France all accomadation have Rules and regulations, this is not only on behalf of the owners but protection for the guests.World travelers would know this.

The cottage was not cold as the previous guests had only left at 10.30 that morning so the property had not been empty.the cottage has 3 electric heaters and is double glassed.the outside temp that particular week-end was in the high 70.here.
With regard to the notice about septic tank this is a generic sign as the cottage was with a well known company for the last 4 years.they insist it is on display for the guests protection and they can be found in all french rental property. we do say in our guest paperwork that we provide special bags for disposable nappies and sanitary items we do not comment on a guest age as this is too personal and irrelevent. This booking had a 2 year old so this information was relevant.
The bath mats are infact are Ikea family friendly non slip Bath Mats Fully washable and are laundered between each booking.these can be found on their web site not peices of carpet as suggested.the plug socket is 2.5 mtr up beside a brandnew(fitted end March2014)wash basin/vanity unit with mirror and shelf.we even provid a step up so children can wash their hands. In photo this can be seen as can the reverse non slip backing on bath mat.we apologise for overlooking the dust in the socket.

With regard to priceing this nightly rate is based on a 7 day rental, set by holiday lettings. It was a late booking and Easter these guests was sent a quote which stated the price and to only to confirm the booking if she agreed to the terms and conditions.all loged by holiday lettings.

With regard to asking guests to remove bedding on leaving it is a pity they did not do this as their young daughter had been very unwell and had vomited all over the bedding. The bed left like this and the towels used to clean up the mess thrown in the bottom of the shower.we do not expect our cleaner to clean up guests personal mess, irrespective of how much they have paid .
Children have accidents but in the paperwork we supply (rules and reg) we ask if there is a problem please inform us so we can sort out the problem before the next guests arrive. If they had paid a security deposit which they did not as they refused they could not have drove away leaving the cottage in a disgusting state.
I note the word contraband is used, this in itself means haveing something you know you should not.In this case extra heaters. It is against our Ins conditions for guests to use electric appliances wihout agreement.

We do not have a Cesspit, we have a modern filtration septic tank.Inspection last autum was perfect.so no my husband does not inspect one.He does however make sure the toilet is working prior to guests leaving so that it is in a fully working order for next guests.
there are other comments which are totaly irrelivant Flooring fridge it is a normal uk standard fridge.etc.
Lastly I would like to add with regard to the comment about my wife being like a head teacher.prior to our retirement she ran a very busy hospital department and had been in the NHS for 25 years.so I think she can say she has more than adaquate experiance with dealing with the general public.we do have high standars but that is what our guests expect and what we hope we provide them with.please decide for yourself.

“A perfect base to explore Picardie - fantastic accommodation”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 March 2014 for a stay in February 2014

The quality of the furnishings is very good and in particular the beds are of excellent quality. It is obvious that the extremely friendly onsite owners have invested on making the house comfortable for their guests. The area is beautiful and plenty of quiet roads to cycle and some testing hills too! It would be good to have wifi connectivity as the mobile signal is a little sporadic, but all in all a 5* experience in rural France.

“A Beautiful Little Cottage”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 October 2013 for a stay in October 2013

Jayne and I have just returned from a weeks stay at Primrose Cottage. Every day was a delight, weather was great for October and just what Jayne needed as a birthday treat. The place was spotless and as already said exceeded all our expectations. We brought our own "Sky" card for the digibox which worked a treat, all the same programmes we get back home. Had a day trip to Berck Place for Moules & Frites (lovely Mmmmm) and a trip also to Le Touquet. Both well worth the trip. Only complaint was that our stay went in so quickly, we had a great time and will be back next year.
Thanks Norman and Irene, see you next time.

“A lovely cottage, set in a peaceful, beautiful setting.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 August 2013 for a stay in August 2013

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Primrose cottage, the owners were very friendly and welcoming, who even went out of their way to bring age related toys for the children to play with. The cottage was immaculatley clean and very well equipped. It is set in a beautiful rural part of France and yet only about an hour from Calais, lots to do in the area, although you would need to drive between 20-40 minutes for most attractions. Lots of lovely walks directly from the cottage which is surrounded by farmland.
Would definitely recomend and hope to visit again soon.
