My wife and I have been to Anguilla eleven times since 1983. We’ve seen it grow from a sleepy, friendly secret paradise to a playground for the super rich. We’ve even ridden through the eye of Hurricane Bertha on Rendezvous Bay. But, we’ve never been nor likely will be super-rich, so we are always looking for the best value on a great beach where we can cook.
Turtle’s Nest is such a place. There is a full kitchen, air conditioning, TV, internet in the room, washer and dryer, all the comforts of home except one, the very best swimming beach anywhere right outside your door. The current is usually gentle and you can fall right into the water, swim east to the Malliouhana end of the bay and back and it’s a perfect mile of clear, turquoise water with a perfect sand bottom, save for the occasional ray or starfish. The staff is pleasant and helpful. There is a new massive supermarket within walking distance, although I would recommend renting a car. Before you get to the market, a good, reasonable meal can be found at Blanchard’s Restaurant (a short walk east) or for a more upscale meal, The Straw Hat to the west. This is a sunset beach, so you get a different show every evening, including outstanding stargazing. There is even a family of turtles that live in the quad between the buildings. And there’s the breeze, the constant breeze. We just returned from a stay on the first week of summer and though it was hot mid day, it still felt pleasant with the breeze. Best of all, no bugs, nothing crawling in the room, nothing flying on the beach, no swatting, no scratching. Like I said, paradise.
But there were a few caveats: the appliances. This may be unique to our situation, but the frequency made me suspicious. At first the coffee maker wouldn’t work, but they changed it. Then the microwave would randomly stop working, then work again hours later. Then the washer broke. And they had to shut off the water three times to change the pressure pump. All this as the local cable company was having TV and Internet issues. But, you know what? You’re in paradise! Email can wait. The night sky beats anything on TV. There’s a work around for most every problem. The only thing I worry about is that too many people will want to stay here.
