Atlantic Hotel Porthcawl
Ranked #7 of 20 Porthcawl B&B and Inns

The Atlantic Hotel is well named since it is a part of the Atlantic Ocean that it looks out over. With lovely sea views from both the hotel's front rooms and exterior dining/drinking area, on a sunny day there's no better place to relax. The hotel is right on the main road in a quiet part of Porthcawl with only a wide, well kept grass area separating it from the rocky seafront.

I live only a half-hours drive away inland and since I haven't lodged here I could not comment honestly on the bedrooms, but all other aspects of the hotel I feel are first class. There is a good selection of ales, the food is presented well with the portions adequate for most ordinary folk, and the prices are quite reasonable for the area. The staff are friendly and helpful and the clientele are all ages above teenage. There is a sandy beach with a fairground little more than a half-mile away in one direction, and pleasant grass and path areas providing pleasant walks to Rest Bay Beach which is a regular haunt for surfers, in the other.

This is an old fashioned but comfortable hotel.
Check in lady was friendly and efficient and although there was no computerized system to help, everything was processed very quickly.
Our room was quite small but very clean as was the bathroom. The furniture was of a high standard and there was plenty of wardrobe and drawer space.
The downstairs public areas are nicely appointed, with a big restaurant and adequate bar. All staff in the hotel were very friendly.
The best thing about the hotel is its' location; on the front, close to the town and within easy access to the attractions that South and West Wales have to offer. The M4 motorway is just a five minute drive away.
We were at the hotel with friends for an anniversary dinner. Alas that was a big disappointment. The service in the restaurant was satisfactory but the food was far from being so, with almost every dish a disappointment. For my main course I had a "Fish Bucket with Seaside Chips". I had the distinct impression that the prawns were not fresh, the mussels were chewy and the sauce insipid and poorly seasoned. The chips were rock hard. One of my friends had what was described as leek and potato soup. He could not eat it. He has a hearty appetite normally so this surprised me until I tried some. There was an overpowering taste of cornflour and no hint of leek or potato, with very poor seasoning. Another friend had a pasta carbonara with belly pork in a white wine sauce. It was tasteless. None of us finished our meals and one dish, shoulder of lamb, went back to the kitchen untouched. We did not complain as we did not want to spoil our friends' anniversary but I would not recommend the restaurant to anyone. That said other diners seemed happy so maybe we were just unlucky.
Breakfast was adequate and unlike the previous night's dinner at least everything tasted fresh.
I do recommend this hotel for the service of the staff, quality of accommodation and location, just avoid the restaurant.

Stayed 5 nights at the Atlantic Hotel. Varied experience. The Bar was very nice. Friendly staff and good selection. Dinner one night was quite good, though I wondered how fresh the prawns were. Wait staff was professional and courteous. Menu did not change throughout our stay, and we opted not to dine there after a 2nd night. Breakfast service was uneven and again, did not vary. Substantial welsh breakfast each day, that was for sure.

In terms of accommodations, our room was on the small side. Two single beds that were uncomfortable and on rollers. Would not recommend the beds. Time for new mattresses.

The first time we stayed in winter we were upgraded gratis to large sea view room with balcony. Other rooms are good, some with side views of the sea. The hotel is old and traditional and has more character than any chain hotel.
We have eaten once in the restaurant which was a good if typical hotel type restaurant, but most recently had an evening bar meal which was better value. Breakfast service was slow as the waitress was on her own, but she was competent and friendly and the food was good.

Room Tip: Out of season it is worth asking for a seafront room.

Never liked this place but the food has seemed to improve a lot, only been a couple of times but both times enjoyed my meal. Most meals reasonably priced but some very expensive. View is lovely from the front area.

Beautiful location on the sea front. It seems to be a place frequented by locals and retirees. Comfortable and clean rooms, good Sunday lunch and good range of beers on tap.
Functional and friendly, good deals for 3 night stays, etc.

Room Tip: One on the sea front, great views of the bay.

Stayed there for one night and it was probably the worst hotel i have ever stayed in for £85 you get a mattress with springs sticking out you get noise coming from other rooms until 2 in the morning, went down stairs just after 1 in the morning telling the person on reception about the noise and the response was we will sort it out in the morning so no help what so ever so hardly slept. No customer care they just want your money and what happens during your stay is tough.
