“Short but comfortable stay.”
Reviewed 21 August 2014 via mobile

Stayed here recently for one night while attending a concert in Porthcawl. Had an evening meal which was very good, staff pleasant and obliging, rooms clean and comfortable if a little dated. Nice breakfast and all in all a pleasant , if short stay.

We reserved a table for Sunday lunch and because the conservatory was fully booked, the dining room was available. We were happy to accept and made a booking for the 2pm sitting. (they have two sittings one at 12pm and one at 2pm).
We have eaten here several times but not since the conservatory was opened. The dining room looked fairly empty with fewer tables laid for lunch.
THEN more and more people arrived, not to sit at any of the tables but to stand around chatting and drinking and taking photographs.
We soon realised that this was a large group who had already had lunch in the conservatory and either decided or were told to continue their celebrations in the dining room . In the end the group was so large (20-30 adults and children) that our table was surrounded by them.
The waitress came a couple of times to apologise and said that she did not know that was going to happen.
We asked to see the manager and explained that this was no way to enjoy a Sunday lunch. We thought the dining room would be a place where we could enjoy a meal in relative comfort and not be an extension to the bar.
Her response was quite unsympathetic and said that she could not stop people enjoying themselves and that ‘...it is like this every week’. She then suggested that we should have chosen a different table but we told her that this is where we were asked to sit because other tables had been reserved apparently.
At this point, sensing that we were very unhappy with the situation, she said that we would not be charged for the meal.

This may sound like a positive outcome and to some extent it was, BUT we did not go out for a free lunch.

If you want a decent meal in Porthcawl, this is the place, however as a hotel, the rooms, whilst clean and well presented all suffer the same issue, the walls are paper thin and the showers are useless. It is inexcusable that hotels in 2014 have showers this bad. I have has two or three rooms here on previous visits and all are the same, so I stopped going. After a day at the steelworks, you need a decent shower and you will not get one here. A real pity as this hotel could be much better if this was resolved.

Had Sunday lunch here today, nice food (except for the watery swede), but £12.95 I thought was expensive for 1 course, never this expensive before the extension was built. Staff are very helpful and the view is brilliant.

We came on a gorgeous June day for lunch, and had a lovely view out to sea. We opted for the standard £12.95 menu, and had three delicious meals, hot, freshly cooked, and generous portions. The pork loin steak was enormous, the plaice and haddock were nicely cooked, and the vegetables were fresh ( apart from the peas). Desserts were good and large. Wine by the glass was not expensive. We shall go again!

At the end of our long coastal walk we went to fairways for lunch. The special deal was for 2 courses. We had two mains, one starter and one dessert. The mussels for starter was simply delicious and the battered haddock came with wedges and mushy peas. The plaice was very nicely cooked and the vegetables, peas, carrots, long beans and new potatoes were cooked to perfection. To end the meal I had chocolate indulgence and it was the perfect finish to an enjoyable lunch. It was delicious, well presented with two scoops of ice cream.
We ate in the conservatory and it was light and airy and cool. Pleasant surroundings and good service.

Was not expecting too much having read other reviews, but it was a very lovely evening. The hotel is in a fabulous position right on the sea front, we had a lovely sea view from our bedroom which, was very clean and comfortable. There was no hair dryer in the room but a simple question at reception and the good lady was furnished with one straight away. The staff were attentive and pleasant. We had a well cooked hearty breakfast the following day and even served by the very friendly owner, who ensured our cups were full and our meals were hot! Well done really enjoyed it for the money. Will stay next time we visit the Grand Pavilion.
