We stayed here for 2 nights while attending the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. It's an ideal base for visiting that city - 40 minutes to an hour away by car or by train, but a great rural location. As others have said, the hotel is set in one of the mill buildings of an 18th Century mill complex .... as a result the ceilings are high and the rooms and corridors are spacious. It's also a very quiet location with good walks along the river bank to the Falls of Clyde.

The hotel is fairly small - only 28 rooms - and has a restaurant, small bar and a pool. We only ate breakfast; the cooked version being very good, but the cold meats somewhat disappointing both in variety and presentation. Service was very quick, and all the staff we encountered (in and out of the restaurant) were friendly and helpful.

We will definitely return some time to explore the area in a bit more depth ....

Thank you for sharing the experience of your stay at New Lanark Mill Hotel on TripAdvisor. We very much appreciate you taking the time to do this and would like to thank you for your positive feedback. I am very pleased to read that you found the staff to be helpful and friendly throughout the hotel and I have already fed this information back to them of which I know they appreciate.

I have taken your comment on board regarding the cold meat selection at breakfast and have asked Chef to discuss this with his team. A high standard of presentation is necessary and this must be adhered to at all times. Three choices of cold meats are offered so if you received less than this then we did not meet our minimum standard. Please be assured this will be addressed.

We certainly hope to see you return in the future and I am very pleased to read that you will consider doing so. There is so much to see and do within New Lanark and the surrounding area and I am confident you will have an enjoyable time.

Once again thank you for taking the time to write a review and please do not hesitate to contact me if I can be of any further assistance.

Kind regards,
John Stirrat

My daughter and I stayed for 3 nights during the Commonwealth Games. The location is absolutely beautiful. If you like Industrial Revolution history, lovely woodland and riverside walks, nature trails and general tranquility and it's around an hour from Glasgow city centre so you have it all here. And the hotel is, despite what follows, a place that I would go back to and recommend to friends.

We chose this location for its transport links to Glasgow and the Games and it proved ideal. Although Lanark railway station has limited parking, the receptionist told us this and suggested driving the 7 or 8 miles to Carluke where there are 300 free car parking spaces at that station. We opted for Carluke and it worked out very well, taking well under an hour to the centre of the city.

The hotel itself has obliging staff and reception were particularly helpful, but there are a few small issues that would take very little to correct:

* Print out the "specials" menu so guests can read it for themselves, alternatively, chef to fully brief the waiting staff in pronunciation and dish ingredients.
The menu and food was excellent meaning that it was difficult to make a choice as it all sounded delicious. Breakfasts were also very good with the full cooked option not being at all greasy and poached eggs were cooked to perfection :-)

* Housekeeping could be more thorough; although the rooms appeared at first sight immaculate, the furniture was a little tired and scuffed, there were some cobwebs on the ceiling and the daily maid service was lacking in as much as the underside of the toilet smelt dirty, the duvet and pillows were simply thrown over the crumpled bottom sheet. (Even in budget hotels the sheets are straightened). This left us wondering what else wasn't done when rooms were changed over. We also noticed that where all the "thank you" cards were displayed in reception, these hadn't been moved for some time as the shelf was quite dusty.

We didn't have time to use the swimming pool but it looked lovely and people were using it all the time. Neither did we have time to visit Robert Owen's house, the tenement and the store, but as the tickets are "open ended" they are kept for the next visit. We spent ages in the heritage centre as it is a particular area of interest and the spinning machine operator was extremely informative when asked questions.

All in all, though there are some shortcomings that are easily remedied at very little cost, I would recommend this hotel; don't be put off by the imposing buildings - the restoration is beautifully done.

Room Tip: I think all the rooms might overlook the River Clyde, if not check if you can have one of these.

Thank you for staying with us at New Lanark Mill Hotel whilst you attended the Commonwealth Games. I am very grateful to you for sharing the experience of our hotel on the internet and by large it does appear that you had a very enjoyable stay.

In relation to the two negatives that you have mentioned please be assured that your comments have very much been taken on board and I have already had discussions with the Restaurant Supervisor and Head Housekeeper. We will ensure that the staff are better briefed on the specials available in the restaurant but on the whole I am delighted that you found the menus and meals to be excellent and that breakfasts were of a high standard. This most certainly is our aim so I am very pleased that you enjoyed eating in the hotel.

Housekeeping standards have been discussed at some length. I very rarely receive negatives about the standards of this throughout the hotel, however another reviewer also highlighted a few shortcomings in an earlier review. Please be assured that we have addressed this in great detail and I am very confident that the glitch in this area has been resolved. We are passionate about achieving high standards and we certainly do not want any of our guests forming a negative impression. Therefore we have put into place new measures, carried out staff training and have most definitely focused on any shortcomings and removed them.

Although you did experience these 2 shortcomings I am delighted to read that you would recommend us to friends and family and also return yourself. This goes to show that there are many more positive reasons to stay with us.

We very much look forward to you returning again in the future and if I can be of any assistance please do not hesitate to contact me.

Kind regards,
John Stirrat

Outstanding....I would highly recommend New Lanark for your wedding venue, birthday party, anniversary, christening, short breaks or just a top class night away.

I married my best friend at new lanark mill hotel on 6th July 2014 and to say the service, attention to detail, care and love that was put into our day was amazing would be an understatement. I stayed in the Clyde Suite the night before my wedding and it's total luxury, the room was clean to the highest of standards, I'm very picking and I was more than happy to leave my rubber gloves at home that weekend, it was spotless with outstanding views, brilliant room service, yummy food which we totally indulged in and staff including cleaners that went out there way to make our stay memorable xxx

I can not thank the staff enough, Rachel, Lynn, David & Heidi made our stay perfect.. All the staff too many to name were amazing, felt like a little family.

I will be booking up for our 1 year anniversary, 2nd, 3rd and 4th...Thank you

All My Love Mrs Mein xxxx

The hotel is in a covered mill in a world heritage site. It is stunning and atmospheric. The rooms are big and the facilities comprehensive. The staff couldn't have been more helpful and friendly, catering for my late arrival and early breakfast and departure with a smile and absolutely no fuss.

We stayed 5 nights in the water cottages, and could not be happier. The location is slightly out of the way, but what you get in return - a World Heritage Site with loads of history, a working wool mill, walking trails, and a great night sleep! I would come back and stay again. Located 50 minutes from Edinburgh, and 40 minutes from Glasgow, it allowed us to see the South of Scotland from a central location.

Room Tip: Water cottages are more secluded behind the hotel and offer peace and quite and the enjoyment of the...

We were only staying for 2 nights, using this as a base for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. I don't think we could have chosen better.
Location: we knew nothing about the area and nothing about the history of the mill but were fascinated to discover the work of Robert Owen (son in law of the original founder). Clearly a very enlightened man - I won't go into detail but if you visit, check it out. There's a mill museum which include the worker's cottage, the owner's house and the school. There are beautiful walks in the Clyde valley and all the room overlook the fast flowing water. All the buildings have been beautifully restored and the whole site is surrounded by trees. It's very peaceful!
Rooms: we had a twin room though there are doubles available I believe. It was spacious, pleasantly furnished and comfortable. The bathroom too is roomy with a full bath and power shower. Quality toiletries are provided and good, fluffy towels. There's plenty of hanging and drawer space for those staying longer than we did. Lighting is good and the windows overlooked the river - we kept the window open so we could hear the sound of the water. If I have any niggles, it's a very slight one. We both found the bed a little firm.
Food: we had a bar meal on the first evening but the second evening we were at the athletics. The food was excellent, nicely presented and perfectly cooked. Service was quick, attentive and friendly. The cost of the food was fairly standard for the type of hotel. It certainly wasn't expensive.
Breakfast too was good - the cooked food was prepared freshly to order. We were offered more tea/coffee but the pot of coffee I had gave me 2 large mugs full - enough even for me!
Service: friendly and good throughout. We asked for some advice about finding the park and ride we'd booked into to get us to the stadium and they printed out a route planner. When we were checking out, someone else was asking for help to get to the same venue, but by train. The receptionist gave very detailed information including train times (without needing to refer to any timetables) and advice on where to park at the station as well as the walking time from the station to the stadium in Glasgow.
Overall, we were very impressed and hope to return to see more of the visitor attractions both in the heritage village itself and the surrounding area.
