“The Elstree Inn is Great”
Reviewed 7 February 2010

I have stayed at the Elstree Inn twice. The accommodation has been good.

My room was cosy and bright. It was warm with sky colour television. There was tea and coffee making facilities and a wardrobe in the room. The bathroom is clean and basic with a shower, toilet and sink.

The staff were friendly and helpful.

I would recommend this hotel to anybody who has a budget to keep to and is happy with the basics. The location is great as it's only 20 minutes to London and you can walk to the station. Elstree and Borehamwood area have lots of shops, bars and restaurants on your door step as well so you can definately get anything that you want at ease and even enjoy some shopping for leisure. The town enjoys strong links with British film industry and has many local film studios. The countryside isn't far off if you want to go enjoy walks and other sports.

It is easy to get a taxi to Watford where there was even more bars and clubs to enjoy - O'Neills,The Walkabout, Oceania,80's Disco and more...

I arrived at this hotel with some friends excited about the weekend and knowing we had not paid much for the triple room i expected basic standards- which i do not mind as long as its clean and i can sleep in a clean bed. This was not was we were met with at all, the first room we were shown was not acceptable here are the issues we had with this room:
the non-smoking room smelt of smoke
the bed linen was disgusting- umatching i can deal with but they had fag burns, stains and to top it all off there were hairs in the beds i found this really off putting.
one of the plug sockets did not work and the carpets looked like they hadn't been cleaned in a while.
Room 2: First of all i would just like to say that the lady in receptionist was lovely and understood when we said that we were not happy and she said that she could show us another room. Well, where do i start firstly:
the sink was coming away from the wall
the carpet was dirty
the bed linen were torn in places, stained and yet again there were hairs in the beds
wardrobes were missing their handles
there were stains on the curtains and someone had put a bag over the smoke alarm so that they would go off when smoking
there was also a pest control trap.... this made me cringe!!!

On going down to reception a second time i didn't feel happy about the idea of staying at the elstree inn if this is what i had seen so far what else was to come.
Room 3: We were finally shown a single and twin room and told to book these it would be an extra ten pounds frustrated we decided to look, well these were of better standard but still the twin room bathroom had a dirty floor and handles were missing from cupboards.
I don't usually complain much but i just felt i had to say something so that other people do not waste their time like we did. I understand that we didnt pay much but you at least expect a basic level of cleanliness when you stay in a hotel i just could not stay here how could anyone allow people to stay in rooms with dirty floors and bed linen and charge for it. The rooms should have be cleaned in preparation for our arrival just as any hotel would.
We finally managed to find a hotel to stay in and after telling them about the experience they told us that they were aware that the elstree inn is not particularly know for its cleanliness- i will not be returning in the future.

We had a night booked in the Elstree in & was looking forward to our stay, however when we arrived at the hotel it was nothing like how it was advertised. We were only staying for the night & I didn't expect much for the price we paid although it was unexceptable, I'm not a snobby person who expects much but this hotel was just dirty. I will list just a few of the problems we had (this was the first room we was given):

Smelt of stale smoke & had to open the windows as soon as we arrived.
The beds were dirty inside & out, the covers had fag burns in them & stains & hairs were all over the sheets.
The carpet was filthy, it had not been hovered for our arrival or in the last few months I would say.
The plug sockets wern't working.
The curtains had stains & fag burns in them.
The window seal was full of burn marks.
There was no waldrobe or anywhere to put your clothes.
The bathroom was shared & the shower was manky, the tiles were black & just didn't look clean enough to shower in.

The second room we was offered did look beter, although on closer expection we noticed the following problems:

The beds were still dirty & had stains all over the inside & out.
We found a pest trap that had been put down (for god know's what creatures)
The door handles were snaped off of the waldrobes.
The sink was hanging off of the wall & was wobberly (this was dangerous)
The floor & curtains were still filthy.
The bathroom was again shared & we had a nice pair of dirty boxers in the bathroom to greet us.
The smoke alarms were covered with plastic bags so people could smoke in the rooms.

We again then went to complain that we wasn't happy, the lady at reception was very understanding I think deep down she knew she wouldn't have like to sleep in any of the rooms. We then were asked to pay an extra £10 for two seperate rooms, I said no & she was willing to offer them to us anyway (free of charge) so we went to have a look at them, the rooms were definately better, although still dirty overall, the floor in the bathrooms were dirty & there were screws sticking out of cupboards, at this point we just wanted to get out of there.

We said we was still unahappy & wanted our money back, this wasn't a problem, although we didn't know the area & had to find a different hotel to stay in.

Overall I wouldn't recommend this to anyone as the hotel is not even up to basic standards & there is some serious faulse advertising going on. You may think I'm exagerating but I could not stay there & wouldn't want anyone to go through what we did.

For the extra £30 we paid for the Inn Keepers Lodge (Toby Carvery) it was well worth it, it felt like a palace compared to what we had see at the Elstree. The hotel is know around the area for being pretty disgusting, it's just a shame we didn't know this before we booked.

We booked this hotel via Laterooms.com for a one night stay in December. We booked a twin room for £46 so weren't expecting the Ritz!

What we got was a dirty, unsecure and just horrible room. Our room was on the 1st floor. I'm sure the hotel's website says it's been recently refurbished...if it has we were in another wing because it was definitely not refurbished.

The room itself was, on one hand, a good size but on the other hand dirty and in desperate need of repair. The walls were dirty, with chunks of paint missing, the TV worked but had no ariel, the door closed but rattled and didn't seem to fit into the lock properly (we were very dubious about leaving things in the room) and we had a window but it was covered by strange frosting so no light come in, although i think it looked out on a brick wall anyway.

The bathroom was AWFUL! The sink had been smashed and had a big chunk missing from it (which they'd utilised as a place to store the plug!), the shower was absolutely filthy with what was clearly years old dirt and mould all over the walls and around the showertray.
The first thing I do in a hotel room is check the bed to see if the sheets are clean. Surprisingly these were not! The bottom sheet had been changed but the top sheet and duvet cover had clearly been on for a while and included some lovely stains. I called down to reception to ask for new bedding - no problem was the reply. About 10 minutes later a lady arrived, handed me a duvet cover and left. Nevermind changing it for me, she didn't even wait to take away the dirty linen!!

Luckily we were only there for one night and were using it as a base for going out in London in the evening. One plus about the hotel is that it is just a short walk to the train station which offers a direct line into St Pancras in about 20mins. I'm sure the room looked better when we returned after a few drinks but the next morning looked even worse!

If we could have found another hotel at short notice we would have definitely moved. Stay here at your peril!!!

  • Liked — Close to train station, has free car park
  • Disliked — Dirty, unhelpful staff, didn't feel very safe.

Its only a little hotel but they really do make up for the size with a warm welcome from lovely staff who were ever so helpfull. I can be quite fussy when it comes to hotels but both myself and my girlfriend thought it was lovely. It is very homely and they even have sky on the television and the location is superb with everything you will ever need in short walking distance.I will definately stay here again!

We stayed overnight on Saturday 26 August 2006 in a double room. The hotel is located in Borehamwood which has a train station on a route between King's Cross, London and Luton Airport. The hotel itself is very central as it is located just off the main high street which some of the room overlook. There is a private car park. The staff were very helpful and our room was allocated quickly. The room itself although small was very clean and tidy with ensuit shower. We did not spend much time there as we went out and returned late in the evening. Our room overlooked the high street and was above a public house and there was quite a lot of noise from people in the street late at night. I can not recall if brekfast was offered as we did not eat there. We would be happy to stay there again as it was clean and good value for money but we would ask for a room away from the front of the high street and would recommend others to do the same.

  • Liked — very clean and value for money
  • Disliked — noise from people in the street outside late a night
  • Tips/Secrets — great location for accessing/ commuting into London butask for a room away from the high street
