Owner description: Bicycle rental and self guided bicycle tours from Castelnaud and Sarlat. We have 10 different types of bikes including town bikes, mountain bikes, tandems, performance and fitness bikes, touring bikes, electric bikes, all sizes of children's bikes and various trailers for children starting from 18months (or less with some safe ingenuity). Our shop in Castelnaud is at the start of the best cycle path in the region, along the Ceou River Valley, and it passes through many little hamlets on its way to Daglan with you can freshen up with drinks, ice creams, or lunch. This is a pleasant ride for all the family, and it is downhill all the way back to the shop at Castelnaud. Our shop in Sarlat is at the start of the Sarlat cycle path, Piste Cyclable de la Dordogne, and it wends its way along an old railway line towards the Dordogne valley, crossing it once at Grolejac, or meeting up with it later at Rouffignac after the CYCLE TUNNEL. Whilst this is an easy ride, there is an uphill gradient back to the shop at Sarlat. You can of course choose from a great number of other rides available from each shop, or we can deliver bikes to you at your accommodation. All the accessories (anything without wheels) are free with the rental.

“Proper road bikes for those that want them”
Reviewed 4 May 2014 via mobile

Joel of Bike Bus looked after our group of 7 'Mamils' really well. Excellent quality (aluminium) road bikes (Ultegra group set) were well maintained and fun to ride. Bikes were delivered to and collected from Sarlat bang on time. Joel is based in Castelnaud but will deliver within reasonable distance. He will obviously be v busy in July and August but in May he was certainly able to provide a great personalised service; very helpful with route suggestions. We'll be back!

“Beautiful day cycling velo vert Castlenaud”
Reviewed 30 September 2013

We had a lovely sunny day cycling along the velo vert from Castlenaud to Gaumier and back. Joel was very helpful in advising us where to go as well as spending extra time for a chat about the countryside. The bikes were well maintained and very comfortable seats. This personal service is very appreciated. It is very easy to pick up bikes at hub Castlenaud and cross the road and you are on your way. Easy cycling past fields, crops, streams, forests and quaint villages. We stopped for a cool refreshment at Daglan then continued onto Bouzic and Gaumier. The ride from Bouzic to Gaumier is well worth the extra pedal. Scenery changes to forests and there is gravel road with a few tiny inclines.
On our way back we stopped for picnic lunch just before Castlenaud on the edge of a stream. Very relaxing after cycling. We have been doing some casual cycling along Loire River, also chateaux from Amboise and Blois and around Uzes. This ride would top them all for enjoyment, sightseeing and exercise. WELL DONE JOEL for choosing this area for Bike Bus.

“A great way to experience the Dordogne region”
Reviewed 25 September 2013

We did the 3-Valleys trip as the centrepiece of our honeymoon in August 2013. A four-day cycle it was a bit more of a challenge than we'd expected (more hills and we failed to account for that August heat!). Cycling 40-50k per day for people who don't do that regularly is very tough on the bum!

That said the area is beautiful. We wished we had planned some rest days so we could really enjoy it - as averagely-fit people (ok, and with me 6 months pregnant!) most days we were in the saddle for 5/6 hours which didn't leave as much time to enjoy the countless attractions en route as we'd have liked.

Joel's directions were excellent and fun to follow, there was very little confusion - but including a map with them would have been helpful as distances are not indicated in the directions and little detours suggested were sometimes substantially further away than we had expected. It would be nice to have a map to for the freedom to go off route.

I think for rental for several days, such as we did, lights were a serious lack - we were quite concerned on two occasions cycling in the half light and trying to get 'home' before dark was not much fun (we were actually cycling by the light of the mobile phone at one stage). I'm sure they were available as an optional extra if i had looked closely but I think lights should be standard for trips over 1 day.

In all, I didn't count it as just bike rental and a guide, so while it might seem a fair bit for a couple of bikes and a print of paper (another thing! - 2 copies would have been much better to allow for the odd lovers' tiff!), the knowledge that Joel was there on the end of the phone in the region with his van and available to pick us up if something happened that we couldn't continue was very important to me. Joel was very patient answering questions by email in advance too and made a big effort to find us accommodation in Beynac that had seemed to be fully booked.

Thank you for this great feedback. It is always good to find out what you really think and how I can improve on the service that I provide. In future, I will provide the route notes on a more professional format and with a map for exploration further afield. I generally don't provide lights as standard but they are available on request.
May I say thought, that the route notes are more than just a print of paper. They describe a route that has been carefully designed and has been checked and updated every year to make sure the notes are easy to follow without undue confusion and at 50€ the whole holiday is extraordinarily competitively priced, compared to most other tour joel@bike-bus.com in France.
That said, I'm glad you had a great time, it was a pleasure meeting you and I wish you both every success in your future together, both on and off the bikes ...
