“Excellent Parador but eat in town”
Reviewed 30 March 2014

We thought this Parador was great. Been there since the 30s but they are keeping up the maintenance. In fact they were doing significant reconstruction on the building while we were there but it never bothered us. Rooms are quite spacious and service was good. Dinner was disappointing, presentation was excellent but the quality of the original ingredients for the meal was quite poor. I could almost hear the chef crying in the back wishing he had better material to work with because they really do take pride in their dining experience. Would happily stay there again. The castle adjoining the Parador is a good one to. Cute little town, a welcome diversion from the tourist mobs of Toledo.

Room Tip: Lovely sunsets from your window if you face to the west.

This former palace really gives you the experience of being royalty. The common rooms are impressive, with sumptuous decor. This whole place was like a maze of grand rooms, eventually leading to the dining room with a vaulted ceiling and wooden beams. It was a joy to explore.

Our room was spacious with a very large bathroom. Our view overlooked the old town and part of the castle attached to this palace. One slight drawback, paradors do not provide kettles in rooms.

Parking is available within the central courtyard of the palace, in fact you drive through the walls of the palace to get there. If there is a major event going on, parking could be completely full. And finding parking in the narrow streets of the nearby town can be very challenging.

The breakfast here is impressive -- a buffet style affair, including foie gras. Of all the places we stayed in Spain, it had the best selection of items available for breakfast. However, we did pay $25 per person for this -- so it's a rather expensive breakfast as well. There were very nice views from the dining room.

Excellently restored medieval castle. Only 48 rooms with two superior suites reasonably priced. Great place for a relaxing weekend. Attentive service. Good restaurant with regional dishes.
Large rooms with fireplace that promote conversation and caradery with friends and family.

The castle-palace of Oropesa is the noblest building of the village. The Parador occupies part of the Palace that is in front of the castle, a 12/13th century Arab construction. On the wall of the Castle doesn't lack even a medieval cage, where prisoners were terminated, exposed and left to die. The main door of the fortress closes early, on a museum schedule. The palace dominates the square before the walls and the tower which serves as entrance. Access to the castle is through the entrance to the Parador, by a ramp in a tunnel, similar to that of Setúbal castle in Portugal. It's the same entry that also serves the Parador’s bar situated in extensive porch with columns, facing the walls. Inside, the Parador shows high walls and dated well preserved furniture. Rooms and beds are widely good. Some have also table and chairs. A reasonable swimming pool near the castle ramparts is charming.

Room Tip: As for rooms with castle ramparts view. Remember that some had two or three degrees to climb.

Paradors are for history lovers (sure, for gastronomy as well...) and this one fully meets the expectations of such a traveler. The Hotel is located in a 15th century palace/castle that dominates an entire side of the very quiet village of Auroras.

We got a very nice and large room with a magnificent view over the countryside. The food at the restaurant was great and the service in general very good.

Places to visit around are:
- Talavera
- the small monastery at Arenas de San Pedro
- Avila (very worth !)

I was really pleased with the price I got this Parador for and it turned out to be excellent value. Set on a hill next to a castle, 5 minutes walk from the square in Oropesa. Built in the 1300s, well preserved and tastefully decorated. Large rooms with beautiful views and massive public rooms. Oropesa is a small, typically Spanish town where you can go and eat or drink next to the locals if you don't want to partake of the facilities at the Parador. Plenty of parking makes this excellent for an overnight stop.
A word of warning, don't expect to get WiFi in the rooms - it's a very old palace with thick walls. WiFi is available in the public rooms or take a network cable and use the wired network in the room. It's a tiny inconvenience for what you get.

This is deep, deep Spain and hospitality at its best! It is not 5 star hotel and it has seen better days in the past but its faded glamour in combination with the heat and dust at the edge of La Mancha make an unforgettable setting. Ask for a room with a view towards the Sierra de Gredos and wake up in the morning with this view. Then head towards the pool but first pass through one of the salones and stand for a moment to contemplate the surroundings. It is no accident that even Somerset Maugham stayed here in the 1930s and was captured forever. Unmissable!
