“It follows the usual Thomson Gold format”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 August 2014

I’ve just arrived back from a wonderful week at the Castell Playa with my 78 year old mother and have absolutely no complaints.
This is the 4th Thomson Gold that I have taken my mum to and the quality of what they have to offer has been very similar so I know exactly what to expect. If you’ve been to other Thomson Golds and enjoyed them you’ll enjoy this one. If you didn’t enjoy them then you’re unlikely to enjoy this one.
The hotel is clean and the staff members, without exception, are friendly and helpful and work extremely hard.
We paid extra for a superior room with a wonderful sea view. I loved it because it was in shade in the afternoon so it was lovely and cool after a day at the beach or by the pool. The safe is included in the superior rooms.
The food has something for everyone, well cooked and presented with a wide choice. I do not eat meat and found lots to take my fancy. Each evening has a different theme i.e Spanish, Italian, Asian, International.
All inclusive is exactly what it says in the brochure – full board with local drinks. The drinks that are included are clearly marked in the drinks menu which can be found on every table in the dining room and every table in the bar and in the pool bar so there shouldn’t be any confusion.
The entertainment during the day is low key with starting with games on the hour from 11.00 finishing with a daily quiz at 4pm. The evening begins around 9pm with the resident duo Mellow Yellow and then a 10pm show. This week there was a Motown singer, Beijing Acrobats, Ricky K from BGT and Spanish dancers. From the previous comments people seem to love it or hate it.
There are some lovely walks nearby with clearly marked footpaths. We walked into Son Par and Na Macaret. The local buses go to Mahon and Fornells both are worth a visit.
The hotel is on a hill but my mother didn’t have any problem walking down to the beach. It takes about 5 minutes to get down and slightly longer to get back up. However if you have mobility problems there is a bus. We enjoyed walking the length of the beach on the boardwalk.

Room Tip: The sea view rooms have a wonderful view of the bay - sun a.m and shade p.m, very quiet. The pool v...

Stayed at this hotel for 10 nights from 11/07/2014. It has been 3 years since we stayed here and not much has changed. Sunbeds are still a nightmare!!!!! Although some days the pool guy was removing towels off beds if no one sat on them. It was hilarious. Food at this hotel excellent which is one of the reasons we went back along with the staff. Paco is a star, always running around getting drinks for you. Rooms very good with tea/coffee in rooms. Entertainment good and outside which is a bonus in the hot weather. Beach and views from the hotel are stunning. Overall another brilliant stay but would properly not go back again as felt too crammed in around the pool.

Room Tip: Pay for a sea view if you can as the otherside is in the sun all afternoon and too hot to sit on bal...

We stayed here from 21st June 2014 for 2 weeks. Have stayed in Thomson gold before and not had a problem. This was not a very nice hotel. Very tired and dated, carpets in the hallways to the rooms was badly marked and frayed. Tiles on the balcony to room broken, and if you used the steps down to the pool once you didn';t use them again as they were very loose and dangerous,
both lots. It also wasn't all inclusive as we were led to believe as you had your breakfast, lunch and dinner in the dining room. If you wanted any snacks other than these times you had to buy them from the pool bar. This is not all inclusive, it is full board, which is not what we paid for. Most of the staff were very good, especially the entertainment staff, who excelled themselves. The rest of the entertainment from artists was average, The resident duo were also very good. We booked a room to shower and change on the last day,as we were using the pool and wanted to freshen up afterwards, only to find the people who booked it before us were still using it, you only had a 20 min slot for 2 of you. The reception staff didn't offer us another room, just told us to keep knocking and ask them to leave! Needless to say we didn't shower and left for flight feeling very irate. Also had to ask almost every day for milk for the room, and one day even had to ask for toilet rolls. We love Menorca, but will not be staying at this hotel again that's for sure.

Room Tip: We stayed on the 3rd floor with a sea view which was lovely

Just had two weeks at the Castell Playa and it was brilliant, food was excellent - good and varied choices, sunbeds the best ever, staff great and the rooms comfortable. We did not take the all inclusive option so we could go out in the evening to local bars, glad we did not take the option as the entertainment (what we saw of it) was very amateur and the local drinks are not what we like but this is just our opinion. The local area is very quite (just what we like) and the views are stunning, we had a sea view room and the view from the balcony was beautiful. Would recommend the Sa Gavina bar/restaurant for an after dinner coffee as the view is stunning and the staff are very welcoming. I will be returning to the Castell Playa sometime soon, I hope!!

Room Tip: Pick a sea view room.

Just returned from a week in this hotel, we had a lovely time just me and my husband it was very relaxing, Room was lovely and clean, we paid a little bit extra for a sea view room and it was well worth it as view was amazing. The décor and exterior we found a little dated, a bit like the island to be honest. Food was good, different themed nights and catered for English people which was great, Staff very friendly and helpful, some days we didn't even have to get off our sunbeds as they would come round and ask if you would like a drink, Poolside wasn't what we expected was smaller than advertised, but we were always able to get a sunbed as you can not reserve them as if you do the towels get put into a bag and taken away. 20 euros it cost to get pool towels as a deposit for the pleasure, at previous Thompson 4 star plus they were given to you and changed on a regular basis without a deposit. Pool got quite deep we thought this might have been a problem as my husband cant swim but the hotel provides floats which was lovely . Most things we experienced were good but one thing we didn't understand was signing for you drinks every time you ordered one and also having to put room number down too when you are wearing a all inclusive wrist band, we also found it confusing to what drinks were free and what you had to pay for. This was also the case with other things like water in your room which wasn't included which we thought should have been a necessity as you cannot drink the tap water. Resort was fairly quiet but there are some lovely bars (Bar 51 did just a treat and they sell lovely cocktails) and restaurant if you take a short walk but there are a few steps and hills, This is the same for the beach but it is well worth the walk as the beach is BEAUTIFUL. At times we did tend to get board, Hotel entertainment wasn't the best but on our last night we saw the Temptations and they were brilliant! Thompson reps were only interested in selling excursions and didn't tell us much about the hotel its self. We have stayed in other Thompson four star hotels and this was not a good as what we have previously experienced and couldn't understand why this was a four star gold. But overall a good holiday.

Room Tip: Sea view room was amazing and very quiet.

Just returned from a 2 week break at this great hotel.
everything about it was 1st class. In particular the friendliness of ALL the staff. The food quality and choice was terrific. The drinks were also great. Good entertainment especially. MELLOW YELLOW the resident duo they were 1st class. I don't think I heard the same song twice from them. The girls in the entertainment team were really good. The location at the top of a big hill should not deter anyone as the hotel runs a very efficient courtesy bus to and from the beautiful beach.
It was our first visit to Menorca and it wont be our last.
