“A very enjoyable relaxing holiday”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 October 2009

Had a very relaxing stay at the Hotel Audax during the first week in October 2009. We found all the staff to be helpful and friendly. The hotel is situated in a lovely location and was very convenient for the beach and bars etc. The resort itself was very quiet with many of the restaurants/shops having already closed for the season. We very lucky with the weather and had lots of sunshine. The beach itself was very nice, the sea being quite shallow and warm. We did a couple of the walks to nearby beaches which took approx. half an hour each way, and were very pleasant.

We often went to one of the other two hotels after dinner for evening entertainment,e.g. Abba Gold, Bee Gees, Four Tops tribute bands and on walking back at about 10.45 p.m., most of the bars within the resort had already closed. The hotel had a very pleasant outside bar called Blue Cafe where we usually had a drink at the start and at the end of each evening. The pool bar upstairs was also very pleasant and did excellent pizza's at lunchtime!

We used the Spa facilities once and did the "Spa circuit" which was very enjoyable. They had a special offer on and the cost was 20 euro for two people, which we thought was excellent value.

Overall, a very relaxing holiday in a quiet resort.

Arrived at the Audax in Cala Galdana on a Saturday evening and couldn't park! Reception advised parking within 50yd radius but this did seem somewhat random. Still as the week away progressed parking seemed to be OK.
Check-in fairly smooth but first room allocated was seriously smoky; reception allocated an alternative speedily and this was fine - room 522.
The hotel is good, even very good. It is somewhat stuck in the 1980s design wise but it is clean (daily maid service), has an excellent pool deck with snack bar, 2 restaurants, gym and spa (which we didn't use; the latter seemed quite expensive to us).
The bedroom had twin beds pushed together which was adequate; a spacious balcony affording bay view, TV, mini-bar/fridge, and a bathroom from the 1970s although the shower was OK. No shaver point! A safe was available for a fee of 12EURO per week.
We enjoyed bed & breakfast; the latter was served at a choice of 2 restaurants (4th or 5th floor) and the choice was vast. No need for lunch if staying here! Food was generally very good although service was variable. Juan on 5 had his restaurant running like clockwork!
The Blue Cafe was located on the ground floor and offered live entertainment every night; this was mixed but I can recommend Orlando, a soul singer who does a great show on a Monday (I think).
Location wise the hotel is close to perfect. Within 2-300m you have the bay/beach, 2 or 3 shops and several bars. We had 2 regular haunts; Black&White for live sport, Cake Bar for good food and, yes, cake!
There's a road-train that for 6Euro will show you the sights of Cala Galdana.
Overall; positive.
You need a hire car!

Having read the previous reviews, I was expecting a lot more than we received. I knew the rooms would be small but we had to wait nearly 3 hrs to be allocated a room, even though we'd booked a seaview room we could just about see it from the side of the hotel. The room was shabby with chipped paint, cobwebs and dents in the wall which they'd tried to cover with a picture. The beds were very hard but you do get to choose from 6 different types of pillow. The bathroom was dusty and still had hair on the floor from the last occupants...We had to pay for the safe and loan of a kettle, however we then had to go in search of cups and pay for tea and milk from the hotel as the supermarket was closed. The air conditionning was virtually non existant and when we did switch it on it would make such a noise that we would have to turn it off again. We mainly ate at the restaurant on the 5th floor and would agree that once the staff got to know you they warmed to you slightly however Carmen and Juon were the exception as both were very friendly from the start. The food wasn't bad but most of the meat dishes were tough and chewy...good selection of salads and desserts though and breakfast catered for all tastes. The bar staff were most unfriendly and drinks are expensive. The entertainment was average and was usually finished well before midnight which was good as the resort quietened down quickly in the evening and made for a good nights sleep. We didn't use the spa as it was costly and althought they ask you not to put out towels on sunbeds around the pool there was evidence of this but nothing seemed to be done...the pool was extremley cold..The beach was wonderful but again it cost us 15 euros for 2 beds and a brolly, the sand was littered with cigarette butts in some areas. The sea was great, it's good to take a snorkel and mask as loads of little fish too look at.
Overall the resort was perfect as just big enough not to get bored and due to the types of holiday maker it was very peaceful throughout our 2 weeks, unfortunately I don't think we would go back to the Audax...
A last word of warning - check your bill carefully when checking out as they tried to charge us 32 euro's for a lunch we'd not had. They produced the slip that you sign in the restaurant and it had been added to after my husband had signed for a bottle of water. It was even in a different colour pen ink!!

My mum and I have just returned from a lovey week at the Hotel Audax even the weather was good for us, stopped raining when we got there and was sunny until the the morning we came home.

The transfer time was 1 hour and 15 mins as we dropped off at several hotels. The reception staff were very friendly and gave us the times for breakfast and dinner. We a room on the 3rd floor with a fantatic sea view (its worth paying the extra for a sea view as the other views are not so good and you won't get much sun). The room was very spacious and clean and you get a pair of slippers which was a nice touch. The brochurs all say that there are tea/coffee making facilities in the room but there are not, you can hire a kettle from reception for 10 euros which you get back at the end of your stay and you get cups from the bar, we bought coffee sachets and milk from the super market and took our own teabags.

Beach towels are provided and you get tickets on check in to change them three times. You are given quite a nice long towel that fits the sun loungers perfeclty but when you change them you get given a smaller one thats not so good (We took some of the bigger ones off a housekeeping trolley) so it might be worthwhile taking you own.

During July and August its 6 euros for a lounger on the beach and 6 euros for an umbrella, in September and October its 5 euros each and 3 euros if its after 3pm. The beach is lovely and the bar at the corner of the beach does food and drink to take away or sit in, it also has a clean toilet, as does the other bar further round. There is also a first aid station round by the hotel across the bay. The restaurant on the rock at the side of the beach El Miridor does the best cup of tea and also lovely take away rolls. However the meals are expensive in all the bars but you do get a good portion size so its worth sharing.

Dinner (we ate in the restaurant on the 4th floor)on the first night was a disaster as the resort had a power cut due to the lightening so we had salad by candlelight then had to go back to our room to sit in the dark. It was back on by 10.30 though. The selection of food at breakfast was great, they even had soya milk and rye bread for those with allergies. You get given a cup of tea or coffee and if the staff are not to busy you'll get a refill on your coffee but not tea, you'll have to ask and they don't seem to like it (take your own tea bags though as the tea is awful) Dinner was good to, although Im not a big meat eater and do not like fish but there was always a pasta dish, veg and plenty of salads, cheese and hams etc. Drinks are charged to you room instead of paying there and then, make sure you check your bill when you check out as we had other peoples drinks on our bill. Make sure you take your room key to breakfast and dinner as they swipe it when you walk in. The resturant staff take a few days to thaw but when they get to know you they are lovely. The bar staff however were just miserable! Drinks are very expensive 5 euros 60 for a vodka and coke, stick to beer its 1 euro 95 for a small beer. There was entertainment each night, some nights on the inside stage some on the outdoor stage. On our last night there was traditional spanish music and dancing which was great. The music was finished by 11 or just after each night because of the residents which is fair enough.

The pool and bar area on the 6th floor is very nice but we prefer the beach. We didn't go into the spa as just to go in the hydro pool or in the sauna was 17-22 euros. Its not free to use which none of the brochures or website tell you

There is a shop in the hotel that sells postcards and stamps and the post box in on the reception desk. The cards I sent arrived in a week.

There is a good selection of shops, supermarkets (The best supermarket was the one at the hotel Sol Gavilanes) bars, pharmacy, perfume, tabacco and a 24hr doctor. I bought three pairs of leather sandles for next summer 10 euros a pair Bargain!!

There are some lovely walks and outdoor activites (all details available in the hotel)

If you have an early checkout then you can book an early breakfast the day before which you will get in the bar area. We went down at 6.50am to the bar where there was tea/coffee and biscuits, we had to collect a bag with our breakfast from reception which consisted of orange juice, an apple and some soft biscuits! Not my idea of breakfast and we were not v impressed we thought there would be some croissants or pastries. Speaking to people on the plane thats had stayed in the other hotels in Cala Galdana and they all had toast, cereal and croissants.

The tranfer back to the airport was only 40 minutes as we only had one pick up

Overall it was a great holiday, its a nice resort for a nice relaxing holiday and we would definitely return to the Hotel Audax

My husband & I have recently returned from a week at the Hotel Audax in Cala Galdana. We always read trip advisor before we book & were encouraged by the 5 out of 5 gradings. However, we would not rate it quite so highly. There is nothing as such to complain about but the rooms are smaller than expected but in very good condition & well cleaned. There are two restaurants offering much the same food & unfortunately we often had to queue up to 20 minutes for a table. It would be lovely if one of the restaurants was not a self service buffet as we much prefer to be served at the table by a waiter. The food was adequate but not really exciting - apart from a chocolate fountain one night!. The tapas night was extremely disappointing. Overall we feel it was not particularly good value & this was echoed by other guests we chatted to in the hotel.

Following a stressful year due to my partner's illness, we decided to find a resort and hotel where we could relax and recuperate. We could not have chosen better. The Audax Hotel and Cala Galdana were everything we could wish for, despite the thunderstorms that occured most nights. Cala Galdana is a pretty resort that is not too commercialised - just enough bars and shops to make it interesting. There are plenty of walks and differing scenery within a relatively small area.

The hotel could not be faulted. From the moment we arrived, the staff were most pleasant and helpful - everyone had a smile and a friendly greeting. I had requested a sea view (which is a must) and we spent time on the balcony enjoying the view with a drink to hand. The room was not large, but adequate for our needs. The bed was very comfortable. We could not hear people in the neighbouring rooms. We borrowed a kettle from Reception (10 euros deposit) and got cups etc from the Blue cafe. It was useful to have a fridge in the room.

The pool area is well maintained with an attendant and we were always able to find a lounger available. The cafe at the pool is useful for snacks and coffee. We didn't use the spa or gym on this trip.

My partner has to watch his diet and avoid certain foods, so he was anxious about eating at the hotel. He was pleasantly suprised to find that the menu in both restaurants offered a wide variety and there was always something he could eat. Breakfast in particular actered well for his needs. Staff in both restaurants were courteous and helpful but I must recommend the Alexandra Restaurant on the fifth floor in particular for the service offered by the manager who made each guest feel special.

We will certainly come to this hotel again and will probably make use of the spa facilities next time.

Stayed here the first week of September for 1 week. We arrived at 10am and the check-in service was excellent- setting the standard for the service fom every staff member for the whole week. From the housekeeping staff, to the bar staff, to the restaurant staff, all could not have been more polite, friendly or efficient.

Our room was on floor 7, and we would recommednd a higher floor as they have better views. We do not think it is worth paying the extra for a sea view, as it is quite limited. We had a pool view which was lovely. The only negative point was that our room smelt of smoke when we arrived, but after a few days it had worn off. We commented on this to the hotel manager who wrote to us when we returned home, saying that smoking is actually forbidden in all rooms, and guests should smoke on the balcony only.
It would perhaps be a good move to make the whole hotel non smoking as the previous occupents had obviously not obeyed this.Previous comments say about the air-con not cooling the room enough but we found it to be ok. Tempertures were between 29-31 degrees during the week, but it was cooler at night anyway so room cooled quite nicely.

The food was excellent, but the restaurant on floor 4 was by far the better for dinner than on floor 5. It was more suited to couples, as they were rather a lot of high chairs dotted around floor 5. Also, 4 has the show cooking where meat & fish are cooked fresh on demand.Breakfast was really good at both.

Pool area is large & with lots of loungers, although many are in the shade for most of the day. There are quite a few on the upper level by the pool bar which get more sun.
Pool towels are provded which you an also take to the beach.

The hotel bar is nice for an after dinner drink, with entertainment every night. Some were much better than others, but there was only 1 night we couldn't listen to it for long- The Police tribute act- dreadful. Wine is well priced for a 4star hotel at 10 euro's 50 a bottle for the house wine which was superb.

The location of the hotel is perfect, 2 minutes from the beach and overlooking the small marina. Very quiet resort with a few bars & restaurants, but most people stay in the hotels at night, as each large one has an act on & you can wander in for a drink.

The hotel is geared very much towards adults, although there were a few children there. There are no real facilities for children, and we think it would be a good idea if they considered not accepting bookings for under 16's. They are actually thinking of doing this which would great, as there are very few adut only hotels, where you can have peace & quiet by the pool, and eat in the restaurants without crying babies.

Menorca itself is a great island. Hiring a car is a must, and it is so easy to drive around, and being so small you can see a lot of things in a couple of days. There are loads of ancient ruins if thats your bag, and beautiful fishing villages for a good lunch.

Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and would not hesitate to book again.
