“Great little secret”

Delightful hotel with most helpful and service orientated staff you could hope for. Given the price, was surprised that the room was as big as it was and had aircon. Food was amazing. Madam is gorgeous and Monseur an absolute car nut so expect plenty of visiting Jags, Astons, Bentley's etc.

My wife and I first stayed here in September 2009 for a long weekend anniversary celebration and returned in July this year for a relaxing break with my elderly parents (85yo). We were not disappointed. The welcome from Madam and her staff was super; warm and genuine, nothing was ever too much trouble. The en-suite rooms we stayed in were at the front of the hotel with balconies; bright and comfortable - perhaps the most comfortable queen sized beds we have ever slept in! What makes this hotel remarkable for us is the talented chef and his team who craft a range of really super dishes with regional produce. For foodies you won't be disappointed and the cheese board with more than 30 regional cheeses, fruit compot and walnuts to accompany is super not to be missed. You will be shown to your table in one of three intimate dining salons or outside on one of two terraces, weather permitting. Quite rightly the restaurant is popular with the local community and professionals from futher afield; Paris and Rennes so if staying ensure you have advised Madam and her team the time you will be dining. Expect to spend your evening dining, this will not suit you if you are used to rushing through dinner. Here you will spend a relaxing evening enjoying fine wines, savouring the flavours that are brought to you. The swimming pool sauna and spa were a welcome retreat and my wife and I enjoyed our spa treatments from the range of treatments availble for ladies and gents (on our first stay). Finally, the hotel should be commended on its very good access for the disabled with ramp into the foyer and reception, to the lift beyond. One minor criticism which is really minor but I think the feedback will be appreciated is the balcony furniture; chairs recliner and table were in need of being oiled and the planters had been neglected through the watering ban as a consequnece of the drought. That said we had a really super stay and will be back in the near future! Finally finally, Madam was so very kind to my father who had taken a tumble on the ferry in the shower of his cabin. Madam dressed his wound on two occassions and we were so very grateful for her sincerity and kindness to a rather distraught elderly gentleman!

We had a most enjoyable stay at this rural hotel/restaurant for three nights in April, 2008. The hotel is lovely, very clean and well-furnished, and the owners and staff could not have been more helpful. The hotel is very well-located (outside of Rennes) for day trips that do not require excessive amounts of driving.

We found the restaurant experience delightful, with excellent service, beautifully presented, delicious food and a most welcoming ambiance. We ate dinner there two of the three nights and wish we had done so for our third night, as the menu seemed to change daily and offered more than enough wonderful selections.

Just as we were leaving, about the first of May, they were finishing up their spa with pool and exercise facilities. This will be a great addition to the Pen-Roc and will add to its appeal as a very comfortable place to stay. We definitely would recommend this hotel to others traveling in the area.

My husband and I just returned from a week at the Pen Roc. It surpassed all our expectations. The staff were welcoming, enthusiastic, and always helpful. Our room was spacious and clean with a whirlpool bath. We had a terrace overlooking the pool and gardens. The food is fabulous, using fresh ingredients grown in a large garden that adjoins the hotel. The creativity of the chef is very impressive. We met a couple from Scotland who had returned after an excellent stay last year. We all agreed that Pen Roc was the best deal around. In addition to the rooms and the food, Pen Roc's location is wonderful for those who are seeking a restful, peaceful holiday in the country, yet the best tourist sights are no more than an hour away by car. When we saw the traffic jams and crowds at those highly frequented places, my husband and I were even happier that we chose to stay at Pen Roc. The weather was cool so I can't say how the air conditioning works, but I'm certainly ready to return to try it out.

  • Liked — The great staff and attention to guest comfort.
  • Disliked — Air conditioning may not have worked properly

We only stayed at this hotel for one night but would happily have stayed longer. The pool is a definite plus and it was great after a long drive to collapse on a lounger with a nice cold drink being delivered to you. We really liked the restaurant, and the food was really good added to which the 3 children aged between 8-13 actually really enjoyed it - the staff were excellent in accomodating them but also as the staff were so nice the children trusted them enough to to try things they hadn't before.

Pen'Roc Hotel, St. Didier near Rennes
Dates of stay : October 2nd - 4th, 2006(2 nights)

We identified Penroc(on internet) as a hotel outside a main centre of a city and in the countryside and was a 3 star or better and provided the services we required.

Location :
It was great as it was in a very small village, off the main country roads but allowed access to very many sights on the coast etc. It was in farming country. As we rented a car in Rennes had some difficulty getting out of Rennes from Train Station but once on main highways very easy to get to St. Didier and Pen'Roc. It is also well signposted which is quite common in France.

Large property area and nice to go for a walk locally.

Very close to a wonderful village of St. Vitre which should be visited.

Hotel :
Please disregard the hotel as also being a small conference hotel. There were a couple of small business seminars held there during our stay and it was noticeable that business people travelling to Rennes or the that area stayed there. Did not interefere with our stay.

Staff :
Extremely helpful and co-operative and all well presented.

Rooms :
The room we had was quite large based on European standards and was quiet.(did not hear other guests or vehicles) It was clean, comfortable and well maintained. Had a balcony for sitting out on in warm weather and enjoying a local red wine.

Breakfast:
Was included in the price and was very nice as it included local produce and homemade products.

Dinner:
Great restaurant with great food(lots of local fresh produce) and a great wine list(local wines also). It is a restaurant you would use only once during your stay as it is very much a city style restaurant. We did use it and it was extremely good and the staff were very good and helpful.

Overall, a very comfortable hotel that provides location, good staff and quiet.

  • Liked — Location(have done a great job transforming farm buildings into a classy hotel)
  • Disliked — nothing
  • Tips/Secrets — If using internet be aware of the french keyboard(different to USA, Aust etc.)

What a lovely spot even if a little out of the way. Most friendly staff, comfortable rooms with air conditioning and even a lift if you are lazy,

Food is excellent and very reasonable and you can put your faith in the sommellier.

We'd go again it is excellent value.

  • Liked — Spacious and comfortable
  • Disliked — Part of dining room a little dark
