Stayed in a shabby chic room in the tower, like the fairy tale. Loved it, intriguing atmosphere, lots of character, romantic.
Wonderful food and delightful setting.
Would like to revisit this beautiful area and canoe gown the gorge again too.
We had to drive from Calais to get there but the journey through France was magnificent.

We had a delightful dinner of classical French cuisine using fresh and good quality regional produce, perfectly cooked(fresh trout, lamb sweetbreads, homemade maize bread, wonderful cheese choice). The staff was warm and friendly.

Better than "average," but less than "very good." How about just "good?"

We liked a lot about it. It's a cool old castle in a great location. Management and staff are kind of old school, in a good way. You know you are in France.

The first room they showed us with a queen bed was very small; just enough room to get around the bed. So we opted for one of the suites. But it only came with two single beds, which they said we could push together. This was a very good room with a view and nice furnishings. But the beds had frames that would not let us really put them together into one, and while not awful, were not very comfortable. They were peculiarly short! I'm 5'10", but my toes were all the way down at the bottom. We had been thinking to stay two nights, but after not sleeping very well, we moved on.

I was disappointed in the food, after reading some of the rave reviews. First off, the bread was stale. This did not happen to us anywhere else in France, even in cheap snack bars. There were two kinds of bread, both seemed to have been from about the morning of the previous day. A huge surprise in France, where bread from the same morning is considered old by evening. In my opinion this alone kills any claim to being fine dining. But my main course was pretty bad, too. The main was a trout pesto lasagne. Sounded interesting. It came to the table at about 350º F. I could not eat any without burning my tongue for 15 minutes. Meanwhile my partner was about done with her duck kabobs, which she said were quite good. When it cooled enough to eat, I found that the trout was overly smoked (smoked would be OK, but trout is a delicate fish, and this was way smokey); it also was very salty. And the pesto had no fresh basil flavor. I could only eat about a third of it. The sides were mediocre and not very flavorful, by contrast.

I haven't stayed at Le Manoir but have eaten there every summer since 1998. My friends and I camp at La Malene, usually for three nights, during our annual walking oddessy through France. We go to different places each year but always seem to find our way to La Manoir, drawn by its ambience and terrific food and the beauty and good walking of the Tarn Gorge. A summer evening meal on the hotel terrace has to be expereinced to be believed. A

This hotel is unusual - a converted chateau so the rooms are a little dated although clean, well equipped and perfectly OK - some small and some large (we travelled with another couple). The position in the Tarn Gorge is superb - both in terms of the immediate surroundings (great walking and great drives straight from the hotel) and the region. The nervous driver may prefer not to approach on the D43 from the east! The personnel are exceptionally friendly and were forgiving of my imperfect French (but - as is usual in France - no lingustic concessions - might have been difficult for the monoglot). Food was not cheap but absolutely superb - even by the high standards one expects in France - and very good value - lots of complimentary extras. The one exception would be the over-priced breakfast buffet - still excellent but €12.50 per person is a bit steep for breakfast.

This is an old castle in the centre of La Malene. Quite old internally but very clean and well presented. Great restaurant. Ate outside on terrace. Room not very spacious but reasonable for the price.
Located by the bridge at La Malene and handy for all activities. Try the canoeing down the river. Tarn Gorge is spectacular.

In the heart of the Gorges du Tarn, perfectly located in a village, the old "manoir" has some charm. The rooms are more dated than charming though. The view is fabulous, the restaurant in the garden charming, the staff nice, the food almost good. A nice stopover in the region.
