“Lovely rooms. Shame about the game drive.”
Reviewed 1 May 2014

The rooms are beautiful. There is air con although we didn't use it. They have nice shaded seating areas outside each room which are very private and catch the breeze.

The service lacks the personal touch. The food is ok but nothing special.

We went on a sundowner game drive which was a bit disappointing. The driver ignored all the birds and inevitably put us in a spot that was either looking directly into the sun at the animals or had a bush between us and them. Not so good for taking photos.

We also did the nyala self guided walk which we enjoyed.

There is a tame meerkat who runs around the lodge. The owners of the lodge found him and his sister abandoned when they were pups and they hand reared them. They released both meerkats when they were old enough to survive on their own but toffee decided he preferred the good life around the lodge than life in the wild. When we were there he showed up for afternoon tea to beg for cake.

We had not realised how close to the B1 road the lodge is - but this was not a problem! We could have been in the middle of nowhere despite being only 2km from the main road. We spent three nights at the lodge giving us two full days to hike in the Kalahari dunes.

The room was a little too small - they could have been a tiny bit larger. It felt as if they were not designed for stay overs of more than one night and started to feel somewhat cramped quite quickly. In addition the outside thatched seating space was poorly organised and in the process of being repaired in our room and this meant we could not really use this at all so were somewhat restricted in our space. We did, however, spend time in the very nice pool area and this was fine.

We went on one drive the first afternoon to orient ourselves to the reserve and then spent the other days hiking on the reserve. We saw some animals, but not a large amount as the grass was very high and lush due to the good rains that they have had in the area. In fact, we thought it could almost be called the Kalahari Green dunes lodge! It is stunningly beautiful at present and quite unique.

We found the service excellent and the staff extremely helpful and friendly. The food was fine if not outstanding but more than adequate.

The little tame meerkat is cute and adds to the flavour of the place as does the extremely laid back tomcat!

Room Tip: As in many lodges the rooms are spread out over a large area accessed by a walkway. You could again...

Pros:
- nice lodges with a view to the waterhole
- beautiful and lovely decorated tent-bungalows with own veranda
- nice pool and lounge area
- friendly and attentive service staff
- "Toffee", the lodge's meercat, who comes to play and cuddle with you

Cons:
- Food (Dinner) is only average and can't match the expectation in a lodge like this (In comparison: food was much better in Sossus Dune lodge, Fest Inn Fels and Na' ankuse Lodge)
- not much game in the lodge

We had a great time in the Kalahari Red Dunes Lodge. It was not only that the scenery was stunning but the rooms were just sweet, the food was gorgeous, the staff very helpful and Toffee the cutest companion for a walk ever. If you come straight from Windhoek it's a perfect start. The game drives were fun and a good opportunity to ask any questions cause the ranger really took the time to answer any questions. We absolutely would recommend the place and definietly would come back.

We used the Kalahari Red Dunes Lodge as our first destination on a tour through central and northern Namibia. Conveniently located a few kilomteres off the main road in Namibia, the lodge is perfectly set and decorated to fulfill all traveller's needs. The staff is friendly and helpful, the food was very good and the privacy and design of rooms nice.
Unfortunately we had a sleepless night with a couple of people loudly partying at the pool until 3 a.m, which is definitely not appropriate in a 'safari lodge' and we would definitely have expected the managament to interfere!
We would recommend to everyone seeking a conveniently located lodge, easily reachable, with lots of comfort, at the end or start of a safari.
Last but not least, the Meerkat 'Toffee' has made our evenings even more pleasant :-)

A lodge without a definite character or personality. Our room 'Nyala' was huge with three elements joined together. One contained the sitting room (with an open fire for cold nights), one with the bedroom and one with the bathroom. It had the essential air-con in the bedroom (it was 40 degrees when we were there), fridge and coffee/tea making facilities. No complaints about that at all. We originally had no hot water but that was fixed promptly when reported. Food was average. Good free wi-fi in the public area. As mentioned, we were there in very hot weather so as it was too hot to walk and there is nowhere of note in the vicinity to drive to, the early morning or sundowner drive is really all there is to do. My advice would be to arrive in the early afternoon, enjoy the complimentary tea and cake, and then go on the sundowner drive. Stay one night at the beginning or end of your trip as it's only 2 hours from Windhoek (but 3 from the airport).

Room Tip: There is detailed information on each room on their website, so take your pick.

Recommended.. Lovely tents with nice fittings, welcome drink and yes its true, free mini bar. Atmosphericly surrounding a pan and waterhole. Wooden walkways to central area, really nice staff. The letdown was the food which was ordinary. A 'six minute' boiled egg came back runny. But all in all very nice.
