We had a group of 12 that took a 6 hour tour of the Amazon with Gil. It was fabulous to say the least. We started out by seeing the pink dolphins at the fish market dock and then started our cruise up to the meeting of the waters and then the floodplain. The weather was perfect and we were able to do 2 canoe trips that Gil had arranged in the floodplain.

On the first trip we saw sloths and various species of birds plus fantastic sights on the numerous tributaries that we visited. The 2nd afternoon cruise was even better because we saw a Great PeToo which is a rare find because they are so well hidden in the trees. Gil made sure that everyone had a chance to the bird. Then Gil found a Boa constrictor sitting in a large tree above us. He was as excited ti see this as we were.

The whole day was fantastic and I would highly suggest that anyone looking for a tour in Santarem book Gil. You will not have any regrets.

We booked and confirmed this trip with Gil Serique 4 months in advance. We confirmed the date on two other occasions including two weeks prior to our arrival. Gil promise us the world. Unfortunately upon our arrival he failed to show up at our pickup point at the per arranged time of 8:00 am. We phoned 30 minutes after the pickup time and sure enough Gil was in bed. He said he would have "someone"pick us up in 30 minutes then 40 minutes later he texted us and said "someone else" would be picking us up in 45 minutes, 60 minutes later. We gave up on Gil. If you want a reliable person don't book this clown . Listening to him he invented Amazon tours.

We ended up using a young man at the pickup point by the name of Patrick with functional english. He is a long time resident with fantastic relationship's with tour operators. We visited the market and the fish market saw the pink dolphins being fed at the fish market had a wonderful Lunch. (yes it was lunch time before we left the market thanks to Gil) We then boarded a small fishing type boat suitable for 6 passengers so it was just Patrick my wife and I and our experience River pilot. This man can spot a Sloth, Iguana, Monkey from a mile away. We also saw 14 water buffalo randomly swimming the shore's of the wilderness of a nearby lake (widening of the river) and saw both the Pink Dolphins and the Pygmy?? Dolphins in the river on the return trip. Wow what a day and I didn't even mention the birds which we variety and plentiful. After it was all said and done I tipped our boat captain and cab driver's generously and paid Patrick 3 times what he asked for and had fresh fish dinner for two and it was less than Gil Serique. I found the people of Santarem to be honest and very friendly not what you would normally experience at a cruise ship port of call. You should be reasonablely able bodied to board and disembark from the small boat otherwise it's easy going.

This was an amazing natural occurance when two rivers merge, which was highly distinguishable as seen from our cruise ship going up the Amazon. We were first taken aback at how muddy the Amazon was when we were still out in the Atlantic Ocean. Then, to see one of its tributaries with clear water merging, but not really merging for several miles was really interesting. I would have thought that the two rivers would immediately intermix, and not remain separated for so long.

The line of the muddy Amazon and the clear blue Rio Tapajos is very prominant and goes on and on before the Amazon obliterates the line completely. Up and until the meeting of the waters, the Amazon seems not as muddy, but when compared to the blue, it is very noticeable.
