“Great Stay!”
Reviewed 9 October 2013

We were there for a 3D2N trip. Francesco and Richard were very much helpful. The place is relaxing. Accommodation sits perfectly with basic needs all catered for. The sea view bungalow was exceptionally cosy! We loved it! Unfortunately, I sprained my leg the first day and couldn't do much as planned. I would definitely come back! Totally an experience!

We were very lucky to get the sea view chalet and it was great value for money. There is also a diving booth there so if you wanted to go diving, it is so convenient. There is a seafood restaurant if you walk out a little. To have a nice drink at a bar or just to chill out with other travellers, you could get a taxi (by asking somebody from the restaurant) to get you to a small little bar called A Peace Place or Sunset Bar. Make sure the taxi driver can drive you home as it would be too far to walk back from these bars mentioned! Overall, it was a great stay.

A must go to.

Literally 10/ 15 min walk from Tekek jety.

Little chalet, right on the beach, surrounded by 2 scuba diving shop. Rooms are just the right size (not too small, not too big) as most of the day is spent outside.

Nice, friendly, and helpfull staff, as se are the owners.

Relax and chilled out place you can easily stay couple of days, and price is ok too.

Just go to this affix place. You'll love it :)

We stayed at Swiss cottage for three days in the garden view chalet and then later for nine days in the sea view chalets - both excellent and good value. the Sea view chalet was very spacious, a few metres from the beach with a balcony, wonderful views and a hammock to take it all in - very relaxing. Our view was that the accommodation is more than just basic compared with other accommodation on the island - well designed and furnished, very clean, hot showers, AC or fan and everything you need. Yes there are mosquitoes and sand flies but its Tioman so that's part of the package. What also makes it a great place to stay without doubt is the staff - Rob, Francesco, Rich and Stella were all extremely helpful, friendly and very happy to provide advice and assistance whenever needed. Breakfast was included and changes every day. I note a previous review complaining about size of breakfast but seemed fine to us and if you want more then just ask. Another bonus is the availability off cold filtered water on tap and beer and soft drinks from the fridge. If you don't like cats then this may not be the place for you but the cats are well looked after, clean and not overpowering with their presence. In fact they seem as chilled out as everyone else there. Also of course there are cats everywhere on the island. The appearance of a couple of rabbits while we were there was a surprise to everyone - just hope they survive the monitor lizards! The staff arranged an evening. meal for everyone one night with excellent food and a great opportunity to chill out and share experiences. The excellent dive school right next door by is great if you're looking for diving and the snorkelling straight of the beach is wonderful. Tekek has a good variety of places to eat I didn't get bored at all with the choices. All in all a great place to stay - would definitely return

Room Tip: all rooms are good but the Sea view rooms are worth the extra

I found Swiss cottage on trip advisor and we tried to book a few times but it is extremely popular. We finally got a room and when we arrived and settled in we realised why!

Rooms are basic but nicely decorated, clean and all have their own bathroom with hot shower.
We moved a few times as there were a few cancellations which suited us fine as we didn't want to leave. Sea view chalets are a treat. Fantastic view and many an hour was spent swinging in the hammock watching the sea, the few yachts and the divers coming back in on the boat.

Breakfast is included in the price as is tea, coffee, filter water, books and board games. Breakfast is simple and changes ever day. Somedays eggs on toast, Roti Canai, cereal with bowl of fruit etc.

There is a small ish dive school attached to Swiss Cottage which i recommend. They have two small speed boats so you really get a more one to one type of dive rather than the big outfits which are more of a conveyor belt operation.

Snorkelling out the front of the resort is FANTASTIC we saw turtles more than once! Also sea snakes, trigger fish and lots of beautiful coral.

Richard and Stella who run/own the place are great hosts and organised the odd lunch and evening meal during the week. I don't think this is done that often but was a treat as we had exhausted most of the local restaurants after 10 days.

Robert and Francesco who were also working and helping out were both full of local knowledge and couldn't do enough to help. Thanks guys!

Have to mention this to those out there who don't like cats. Swiss cottage have about 13-16 cats. They are all friendly, flea'd and neutered. I am neither a cat lover or hater so didn't bother us but be aware they will lie on anything you leave about. Also Tioman island is a Jungle, sand flies are present on the beach and there are plenty of mosquito about. Swiss cottage fog for mosquito every now and then but get some good repellant!

Room Tip: Make sure you book in advance

Stayed 4 days and 3 nights with a friend at the end of June/early July 2013 just to get away from the city. We stayed in the Garden View Chalet. For the amount that I was paying, I was under no illusion that the place would be anything like a 4 or 5 star accommodation, and I am okay with that.
Swiss Cottage is definitely not for everyone. Bear in mind, that this is a budget place. If you want daily room cleaning and fresh towel service, with mini toiletries set in the bathroom, plush pillows, room service and the likes, then I'm afraid this is not the place for you.
The room that we paid for was really basic, but clean and there's hot shower provided. The room is a little dark, but hey why would you want to spend your time in the room when the beach is just 2 minutes away? And you can snorkel just off the beach! The staff are amazing, and I would like to thank especially Francesco and Stella for their excellent service. Meals are not provided, but breakfast is included. There are a lot of places nearby (within walking distance) where you can eat, so that was not a problem. On one of the nights, Stella and the gang cooked dinner for the guests (for a little extra charge, of course), and the food was absolutely amazing! Stella and Francesco were wonderful hosts, and are always helpful. Do sign-up for for one of the snorkeling trips around the island, the marine life is amazing!
I would definitely return to Swiss Cottage again (this time, I am determined to get the Bungalow Room, which faces the sea!)

Room Tip: Book the Bungalow Room if it is available.

Hi Ulfah,
It is very kind of you to write this review. It means a lot to us. I still recall our nice chats in the morning and at the garden dinner. I hope we can do this again soon. The end of the season is slowly approaching,so we will have time to take a closer look at the rooms and make some improvements. We are definitely going to work on the garden view chalets to make them look brighter. But I do very much hope you will get a room facing the sea the next time you come round.
By the way there will be free-diving in march :-)!

Warm greetings,
Swiss Cottage Team

Worst of the malaysian budget places. It has dark and groomy rooms with very very tight bathroom. Bathroom is so small that the shower drops water on the wc. Room cleaning is on demand only. Old towels and no soap, no brushes, no, no, no... Breakfast is very small and limited. It looks like a joke. You'll stay hungry. Seriously. Located on the good beach with great sea but the beach is infected by sandflies. They have a lots of cats and you could enjoyed these pretty pets but cats crap everywhere. They cost 110 ringgit for a terrace fan room and 160 for ac room. Regular price in the malaysian beaches for that is 60-100 ringgit. What's a shame!

Room Tip: No good room for this price.

Dear Valery, we would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your feedback. You must have really liked our beautiful beach, as after reading your review we are quite surprised that you didn't check out on the first day, instead you endured five days at our little resort without making a complaint or voicing your discontent.

We like to get feedback from our guests as this allows us to improve our service and if we are able to solve a problem on the spot we will. For example if you are hungry and you would like more breakfast, just say so, we are more then happy to make you some more.

On our website we have posted a 'what to expect and what not to expect' page that guests are encouraged to read before making a reservation. In your reservation form that you sent us, you ticked the box to say that you had read this page.

We wrote the 'what to expect' page, so that potential guests can get an idea of what we offer before making a reservation and to manage peoples expectations. Most of the grievances that you have are mentioned in this guide.

For instance.

- The simple breakfast that we offer is explained clearly, we have listed what we offer from day to day.

- We are on the edge of the jungle and it is not uncommon to find insects. Tioman is full of natural beauty and Malaysia is one of the most diverse countries on the planet and this is why people come here. Unfortunately you have to take the good with the bad and while only a fraction of people have allergic reactions to sandfly bites they are a part of the ecosystem. We can not kill them without killing everything else.

- We do not provide daily room cleaning (we will clean your room once every three days or upon request)

There were some grievances that you mentioned that are not mentioned in our guide and we would like to once again thank you for your input.

- we do not provide soap or toothbrushes as most people tend to bring their own. We will consider adding this to the 'what not to expect' list on our next update.

- we have cats. They are generally very clean animals and they do not crap everywhere. Many, many people have mentioned their fondness of the cats in their Tripadvisor reviews but we will now also add the cats to the 'What to Expect' list.

- Yes, the bathrooms in our Terrace rooms are quaint but they are big enough for at least two fully grown adults to shower together comfortably, what more do you need ? They are designed to be wet bathrooms so it is possible that you can get shower water on the toilet while having a nice hot shower. C'est la vie

There is one more thing that we would like to correct and that is your version of our prices. Terrace Fan rooms are RM110 and Terrace AC rooms are RM130. The price includes breakfast and unlimited filtered drinking water, tea and coffee.
