“Great Place to stay”
Reviewed 4 January 2007

Situated just away from the hurly-burly of Cental Cape Town in an ideal relaxing and picturesque suburb, the Sunset Lodge is a very friendly and relaxed place to stay. Great views, easy access to the beachfront, good eating close by, what more could you want. Great value for money, a place I will happily return to on my next visit to Cape Town.

Bloubergstrand Sunset Lodge really blew our minds. It was fantastic! A small intimate b&b in a really upmarket suburb of Cape Town with wonderful views, stylishly decorated rooms and incredible service.

To tell the truth we were strictly 5 star hotel people until one of our friends recommended this little gem. Now I don't think we will ever go back into hotels after what we have seen. Hotels give you all the mod-cons and flashing lights (24 hour room service, a gazillion tv channels, etc) but they often lack personality and soul. And this is what we found at Sunset Lodge.

The two hosts, John and Sylvia , made us feel so totally at home from the minute we arrived. They made us tea on arrival (ask for the homemade crunchies if they have them - they were divine!) and made sure we were fully settled before leaving us to our own devices. We needed to book a restaurant - they did it for us. We needed to book golf - again, they sorted it out. My suitcase was broken from the trip. John saw it and offered to fix it for me - which he then went off and did - at no cost. And so it went on - whatever needed, they provided, often without charging whereas in a commercial hotel we would have been charged for everything out of the ordinary.

The rooms were very, very comfortable with a new mattress on our bed and we could see that the room had recently been refurbished. Everything was spotlessly clean and well maintained. The bathrooms were fully tiled and squeaky clean - something we are very fussy about. The sea views from our room, which had a balcony, were stunning.

The breakfast the next morning was absolutely first class. We didn't eat again until supper.

Overall I would say Sunset Lodge rates right up there with the best 5 star hotels when you compare the things that REALLY matter (luxury, ambience, service, cleanliness, attention to detail, and of course the breakfast!). Plus you get a lot more that you wouldn't get in a hotel. On our third night when we arrived back from our days sightseeing John invited us to join them for a quick sundowner with some of their friends which eventually turned into supper with them (see the photo). We really felt like family.

Oh, and did I mention that the cost was almost a quarter of what we normally expect to pay in a 5 star hotel?

I suppose one downside is that it is perhaps a little bit out of the way if you want to walk to shops and restaurants, but we had a car anyway so this didn't matter. Bloubergstrand Sunset Lodge will be our first stop next time we are back in Cape Town.
