“Cold Winter Visit”
Review of Udmurt Zoo

So upon visiting Izhevsk I wanted to go to the zoo. However, it was winter and I was concerned that the zoo will be closed. However that is not the case. They are open from 9am - 4pm in the winter. We were there for only 1.5 hours but I was quite surprised by everything we saw during that short time. Walruses, Polar bears, bunch of monkeys, fish, elk, many bird species, wolves, and other species of animals. I could imagine that place being a joy to visit in the summer time. But it wasn't that bad for the winter time. There was a lot more there then I expected during this time of the year.

The zoo is pretty small and you can see it all within an hour or so. Ticket prices are very affordable and I can imagine that if you are travelling with kids, it will be interesting to them.

This Zoo is something that locals are proud of. I guess, because it is something relatively new for the city, it is a still "hot spot" for visitors.

This place is a decent size and not expensive to visit. The territory itself is pleasant to walk around and the kids would enjoy the little cartoon characters statues like Cheburashka and Baba Jaga's house along with seeing animals. I think its a good place for parents to bring small kids, since they can just walk there safely without worrying about the cars.
There are many different kind of animals, snakes, deer and even polar bears. The beautiful birds are walking freely allover the zoo.

However, if you ever visited other the zoos in the world, you might notice that this place has sort of a sad feel to it and not living to all that hype and potential it possibly could.
The cages and the territory is not well maintained, you can see the paint peeling off all over. The animals are really unhappy and sometimes look like not so much taking care for. Perhaps it is simply due to the lack of financing. The staff is also not so friendly and helpful. Not a single smile around.

But come and check this place for yourself, you might have a better experience and your kids wouldn't really care about the paint that is peeling off, they would have fun anyway even just to run around the place :)

Small and a lot of the enclosures were undergoing refurbishment so there were a lot of things that you couldn't see (e.g. polar bears)

The prices are cheap ~3-4 € entrance

The zoo is really nice, compared to what we have in Kazan and other big cities nearby. It's been opened just several years ago, so everything is brand new, the animals seems to be pretty happy and fit. The territory is not very huge, but you can easily spend a couple hours here, especially if you're with the kids.
