“Cheap, friendly, killer view”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 June 2014

I was expecting more of a hostel for the budget price, but this stone guest house with rooms and dorms set up on a hill overlooking the lake, with restaurant on site, was great. You can have a beer on the patio and watching the big electrical storms up in the mountains, go for a walk around town. If you're a fussy, fancy hotel person, you won't like this place, but if you just want a good place to stay, give Home Saint jean a shot. I was happy I did.

Great place for the price. I think this is one of the best value for money places in Kibuye. The food is also very tasty and cheaper (with bigger portions) than most other places around. The frustrating thing is trying to get hold of them, so you can book a room. I therefore got hold of their telephone number. If you want to find out if they have space and you want to book a room, try calling this number +250784725107.

We didn't stay here, so really cannot say anything about service, prices, etc. but we walked over to see the place and were wowed by the view - amazing! The place sits out on a promontory overlooking Lake Kivu. The view doesn't get better. The room we looked at had that view, was neat, clean, with good bathroom facilities. Very lovely. Folks staying there all looked happy.
We will stay here if we ever return to Kibuye.

Room Tip: choose a room with a view if one is available

Extraordinary view ! Good price, worth every penny. Rooms are ok.
Catholic place - so don't worry if you are asked if being married
if you come as a couple - best choice is to confirm politely...
Food (even breakfast) can take far more than one hour preparation time,
so order in advance or relax/forget about urgent dates...

A great place to stay if you've come to the Lake for a few days from the big city, or stay longer if you don't need to be anywhere. We came for one night, but ended up staying for 2 because it was very relaxing and romantic. Dorm rooms are a great deal if you're alone or wanting to save money, but if you splurge for a private room overlooking the gardens and lake it would be well worth it.

The town is an easy 15 minute walk away and quite pleasant, perhaps you'll run into some locals like we did. You can also have the desk call for some Motos and they'll zip you around the peninsula giving you a great view from the back of the bike. In hindsight I would have hired a couple of them for a few hours to drive around and stop at what some good view points to take pictures and such. Stroll past town towards the lake, go past the church and head to where a lot of fishing canoes/outriggers are stored for some interesting photos and perhaps encounters.

Only complaint about our room was that the toilet had very little flushing power, so it took a few tanks full of water to get it down, which is an unfortunate waste of water.

Food is ok, drinks were a good price though overall.

Would go back in a heart beat.

We stayed at Home Saint Jean for two nights in August 2013. We agree with previous reviewers that the spectacular views of the lake make this a very unique place well worth visiting, even for a beer when you stay elsewhere in Kibuye. The standard of the accommodation is good considering the price (RFW 15,000 for a double room with lake view per night). Especially the cleanliness of the bathroom was commendable. Nevertheless, it is a low budget accommodation with its limits. The room was very small, the bed sags and the constant smell of insecticide tells you that they are fighting a (loosing?) battle against cockroaches and the like. Moreover, there are not many comfortable chairs or benches on the compound to sit down and enjoy the views. There is definitely room for improvement there. The menu in the restaurant is pretty adventurous at times (gouda and sausage cubes covered in mustard), but we enjoyed the Lake Kivu fish very much and the prices are more than reasonable. We found the vegetarian options quite disappointing (especially the green potatoes, which came neither with spinach nor with garlic as announced in the menu). But this was one of the very few places, which served Virunga Mist beer. For a really good culinary experience on the island, we recommend the Moriah Hills resort (also for renting Kayaks). What spoilt our experience of this otherwise exceptionally friendly pension, was the crowd it tends to attract. Because it offers dorm beds, many young American and European backpackers go there and monopolize the small outdoor dining area with extremely loud conversations. The lack of other seating of the compound means that there is no way to escape or find a quiet place for reading or a private conversation at normal volume. But, I would really like to end on a positive note. All the staff was extraordinarily attentive and friendly, which is another big draw of this place.

We stayed for one night in the Home Saint-Jean. Because we didn't reserve a room, all of them were occupied and we had to sleep in the dormitory for the night. The price for the dormitory is very cheap (2500 Rwanda Francs each). There is one dormitory for men and one for women with many bunk beds into them (at least 10 into the women one and more into the men one) so my boyfriend and I were separated for the night. The bunk beds are really uncomfortable. The mattresses are just so used and old and most of the metal bunk beds are making a really annoying sound while we move in the bed. Some are even not stable on the floor.

We had to ask for a pillow to the administration. However, sheets are included. I was lucky as we were only two people in the women dormitory. Unfortunately, my boyfriend didn't got this chance and had to sleep with at least 15 others people. Some of them arrived late and were talking loudly into the room without respect for the people sleeping.

There is only three shared bathrooms that we can find at the second floor as the dormitories is on the first floor making it a little bit far when you need to go in the middle of the night. One of the bathroom had a broken hinge door making impossible closing the door. There is two showers.

We had the worst night of our entire one month trip at the Home Saint-Jean but we had the best view ever. We fully recommend to people to book in advance in order to live a different experience than our. The restaurant is okay and portion are huge.
