“exactly what you’d expect for the money...if not better!”
Reviewed 13 May 2014

Kabale is often just one of those must-make stops, pending bus connections or a trip to Lake Bunyoni. But, if you have the time and inclination, this little town, particularly if you stay at Kabale Backpackers, can be an unexpected gem. This place is exactly what you’d expect for the money. If not better! It’s cheap as chips, it’s clean and the staff are fantastically friendly. Stayed private room with ensuite and it was pretty roomy, considering, but the bathroom wasn’t. There was some plumbing probs with the toilet and with the shower’s hot water, but for the price, I bucketed the toilet and showered quickly. The common area buzzes with other travellers and some locals too, making good use of the pool table and a bloody cheap bar. Many rooms circle around the common area, so if noise is a problem, this could be an issue for some (though they do wrap it up about 11). Food here is a solidly good attempt at western-style, but there’s enough good joints serving local dishes in walking distance you should try. There’s an extraordinarily good market nearby for fruit and veges and, although the backpackers doesn’t have a communal kitchen, you can grab a knife and cut it up. Clothes washing is very reasonably priced. Local nightclubs are in walking (& hearing) distance and the backpackers is secured with locked gates and a night security guard who will let you in at all hours (and those on late-arriving buses). It’s walking distance to the Posta Bus Stop (very important for those 6am departures!) and they’ll even make sure you’re up and help carry your bag there. I’m not sure what official tours are like, but I did hikes here through the hills and villages, met local kids and my breath was taken away by the beauty. Kabale was my intro to Uganda and I loved it instantly; largely because of the hospitality shown me at Kabale backpackers. I would definitely return.

I spent several nights here and was always warmly welcomed by the staff. The rooms are large and clean and the quality-price ratio is more than good. The garden is perfect. Food is also good. Relaxing atmosphere. Best staff in town, they would do anything to make you happy. I really loved it!

I recently relocated to a small village on the south side of Bwindi Forest, needless to say Kabale is a regular place to visit at the weekends for some fun. We always stay at Kabale backpackers which is clean, safe with lovely staff and delicious food. The garden lounge is a comfy dining area to relax and read a good book. In the evenings, you can challenge locals to a game of pool and drink a cold Nile from their well-stocked bars. I've met lots of travellers from all over the world at the backpackers and only have great memories from staying here.

The rooms are reactively basic but self-contained and very reasonably priced! Robert, the owner is almost always around to chat with if you're looking for a well-organised tour : )

Enjoy!!

If you are near Kabale do yourself a favour and go out and stay at Byoona Amagara on Lake Bunyonyi. That being said sometimes you have spend a night in town to make your bus connection work. This hostel is somewhat clean. Not sparkling but not gross either.
The staff are friendly and since Kabale is a small town you are central to everything in town, except the lake :(

We arrived from a six-day-tour with Engagi Safari. We hoped for a nice room and a good night.

Too bad we got a worn down room with a very dirty bathroom. The water did not run away because of all the hair in the shower drain. The next morning that was not a problem anymore, because there was no water :-(

The worst thing was that there was noise from a disco until 3:30 am. It felt like the disco was literally in our room.

The staff was nice. In the middle of the night they gave us another room to sleep in, but the noise there was just as bad as in the other room. The next morning they first wanted to charge us the normal price, but after we insisted on paying less, the let us pay half the price. They understood that we had a really bad night and they felt bad for us.

This place has the same owner as Engagi Safaris. We did a tour with them and we did not like the tour at all. We booked the tour with Robert Basimi, but we got another guide with us. This guide did not know how to make us feel comfortable, did not know the way, was scared of animals and was not experienced as a guide for a six-day-tour. We read real good reviews about Robert Basimi, that's why we chose Engagi Safaris. We had a nice conversation with him while we booked the tour. Too bad he sent us away with this really bad guide. So before choosing Engagi, you should know that Robert has at least one guide with whom you don't want to go on a safari! Afterwards we tried to look for a solution for our really bad experience. He came up with lots of excuses and refused to give us a financial refund. He offered us another tour with him, but obviously that was not a good solution for us.

In short - this is the most friendly staffed and hospitable hotel we have ever stayed at. The rooms are very good (given that it is in a somewhat remote region in Uganda) and affordable. The same goes for the food.

Our experiences with the hotel:

We were leaving Kampala on Saturday and had booked a room at this hotel for the night. However, the bus was very very late and we send a text to the hotel about us being late (we were running out of talk time so we dared not ring). They then called and asked when we would be there and we could only say what the driver told us - at around midnight. They also asked if we would be hungry when we arrived and we said yes. It was loud in the bus so we didn't manage to communicate more than these basic facts. We arrived at 00:30 to be greeted dearly by 3 staff members. We were thinking they would have some sandwiches for us or something. However, it turned out that they had the full menu ready and a cook standing by!

We stayed there for two nights and then went on a great safari trip for 3 days (the hotel is owned by Engagi safaris, which is also the company we used, and which we will also be writing very favorably about). When returning we were again dearly greeted, and many inquiries about how our trip had been - even though we had only stayed there for two nights prior we really felt like we were coming home.

We then went to Lake Bunyonyi for a day (using the Amagara island resort, which we think is also somehow connected to this hotel). Eventhough the time on and at the lake had been great we again felt like we had come home when we came back. We went back to Kampala the next day after a great stay in the Kabale region.

So I arrived in the middle of the night, tired and hungry, but I found it like a second home. The staff was very kind and polite, and I was so happy to have a hot shower. The rooms are clean and affordable also for a volunteer's budget. At first I planed to stay one night, but I liked the place to much, so I prolonged the visit. I met Martin, a great guy, and good company to hand out with (thank you so much for everything). If I would ever come back to Uganda, this is definitely a "must revisit" place. I almost forgot to mention Davies, I don't know if he works there, but the trip to lake Bunyonyi was excellent, thank you for that.
