We have just returned from an excellent stay in the coach house with our 2 dogs.
After reading many of the bad reports before we went, to be honest we were not looking forward to our 3 day break. (BUT HOW WRONG WE WERE . : ) On arrival we were greeted by Charlotte the new hotel manager, who could not have been more friendly and welcoming,
Our apartment we stayed in was named NESS, it was clean very spacious plus we had beautiful views of the surrounding mountains it was excellent for all including the dogs.
The food was plentiful well cooked and piping hot, the chef certainly new his stuff, the service of the waiters Quinton plus the other younger waiter and waitress Eve was very brisk and professional at all times. We will certainly return in the not to distant future, hopefully next time in the summer. Good luck to all at the Portsonachan Hotel.

Room Tip: Ness is very large and roomy especially with 2 or more dogs. Laminated floor right through from wal...

just back from three wonderful days, and nights, in this great hotel, perfect, no but report a fault or problem to Charlotte, the manager, and if its fixable, it will be fixed. Food was good and plentiful, staff courteous and helpful, across the loch the mountains had an early coat of snow just to add to the beauty of the area. The name means place of peace, i think, add quiet, and you have the full picture. Poor reviews, well if you want noise and amusements may I suggest Blackpool. Thank you Charlotte and staff for a wonderful time on our 50th anniversary. next time the dogs will be coming with us.

We have just returned from our 4th visit to the Portsonachan Hotel. We were warmly greeted by Charlotte and surprised by her giving us a free upgrade to one of the lochside lodges. These are self-contained units with a kitchenette (well equipped for a self-catering stay), comfortable lounge, downstairs cloakroom and an en-suite bedroom on the first floor.
The main body of the hotel retains it's quaint charm. Yes the floorboards creak and the conservatory leaks when it rains but it's still warm and cosy.
We could feel a noticeable improvement with the fairly recent change of management. Both Charlotte and David were approachable and friendly as were the restaurant and bar staff. The food was excellent and good value for money,
I think we will have to go again now to see for ourselves if the improvement is sustained.
Thank you all for a lovely stay.

Room Tip: The views of the loch are stunning and well paying the extra for.

Four of us and two dogs stayed here in adjoining lochside apartments. The views are just stunning. Hospitality is 1st class from Charlotte and her team they are so welcoming and friendly. Had to ask them to sort out our heating and hot water as couldnt work out the boiler-all sorted in no time at all. Lovely breakfast and beautiful lounge area with open fire and the dogs made welcome. Second stay there and look forward to returning.

What a stunning setting to spend 3 nights. There are many poor reviews for this place, but we had a fabulous break, staying in one of the loch-side chalets, which was upgraded for us by Charlotte the manager. OK, the main rooms in the building were being decorated, but still nice of her. So, what is the place like? There is a small reception, and from there access to the conservatory dining room, a stunning place for meals with views over Loch Awe. Off the conservatory is a small bar, with blazing fire, and a fine selections of whiskies and a beer/lager on tap; the bar is also accessible from the main hotel corridor. Next to the bar is a rather grand large 'drawing room', again off the conservatory/main corridor, a very relaxing place for pre-dinner/after-dinner drinks; again, a roaring fire every evening.

And our accommodation. The centrally heated chalet had a small kitchen, although we never used it has we ate each day in the hotel, and a small terrace above the loch, with chairs and small table, however, November was not the time to be siting outside! The lounge had 2 settees, TV (which we never used), and coffee table. There was a shower room/toilet down stairs, while upstairs was a large open-plan bedroom with corner bath, dressing table, toilet, and plenty of storage space. A velux window provided great views over the loch.

The staff. David, the main-man, provided most of the service during our stay, from taking meal orders, serving meals, running the bar, keeping the fires burning, and making sure everything was provided for us. Charlotte, the new manager, was also friendly, helpful and chatty, even to the extent of dispatching one of her staff to buy fireworks for a display on bonfire night.

The food. This was very nice, especially the full Scottish breakfast, which came hot and plentiful with tea and toast - a great way to start the day! Evening meals were OK too, again, hot and generous helpings.

It was an excellent 3 days, and we would certainly revisit, especially in autumn as the colours are spectacular.

Room Tip: Could not comment on the hotel rooms, but the chalets are very nice.

Having just spent a most delightful four day break at Portsonachan I can thoroughly recommend the experience. My wife and I were in one of the lochside apartments and the view over the loch to the snow capped mountains beyond is truly stunning. The hotel is lovely and traditional and, if you want a memorable Scottish experience, this is the place to go. All the staff are friendly, welcoming, helpful and efficient and Charlotte, the manager, is a gem. Nothing is too much trouble and her sense of humour and personal attention to each guest is well worth going to enjoy. The residents' lounge is wonderful and to have your after dinner coffee, seated in a large, comfortable, leather armchair in front of a roaring, log fire, chatting to other guests is a highlight not to be missed. We'll certainly be returning and possibly taking others with us.

Room Tip: Our apartment was the 'Mull' one in the lochside building and it was lovely and warm (import...

I have recently returned from Portsonachan Lodges and wanted to share my thoughts with any interested parties. My friends and I had a really excellent time and much credit must go to Charlotte and her fantastic team!! The cabins themselves were basic but were generally clean and comfortable. The cabin had everything you would expect for everyday living- i.e. Dishwasher, sauna, BBQ, etc. The shower temperature was a bit intermittent and the hot tub more of a tepid tub but for the price, still good value.

Charlotte and her staff couldn't have done anymore for us, sourcing fire lighters, charcoal, replacing flat pints, etc - really impressive stuff. It was somewhat ironic that Charlotte often quipped in her humorous manner "ooo, you don't ask for much", when infact, we clearly did.

We did have one meal at the hotel. Charlotte was very honest in the sense she acknowledged the food was improving but perhaps still not quite there. The mussels were not quite to my taste but my friend, barnacle Bill, loved them. The waiter was a friendly fellow and it was nice to see someone still use a pen and paper to add up as opposed to using the electric till. It was a nice touch and allowed us some more time to sit around and chat and enjoy our surroundings.

Is was very sad moment leaving the lodge, not least as my friends landed me with the electricity bill. That said, we definitely intend on going back. When we booked this trip, we weren't asking for much - a solid base to enjoy the spectacular scenery where we would be safe, comfortable and well looked after - what we got was much, more more. Big shout out to "Smart Price" aka Jimbo for sorting the booking.
