Reviewed 23 March 2014

When I was at this hotel in July 2013 the outside was really disappointing with flowerbeds awash with weeds. The carpet on the stairs from the reception area upstairs was shiny and matted.
The room was okay although the fridge made such a noise it got turned off. The shelf in the bathroom was fixed so it was sloping and therefore nothing could be out on it.
Breakfast was meager! I asked for poached eggs, bacon, mushrooms and tomatoes. I got 1 poached egg, 1 rasher of bacon, 1 mushroom and half a tomato. Not a place I would recommend or stay at again.

Dear Guest

I am so sorry to hear that you had such a disappointing stay with the hotel last July. We only took over the Coquetvale in November 2013, so any issues were out of our control. However I am pleased to say that we have just completed a refurbishment of the Hotel including all bedrooms and public areas including the carpet, which I agree had seen better days. Our breakfasts are made up of locally sourced ingredients, and are one of the many highlights of guest stays of late. Our new chef is doing an excellent job with the food in general, and staff have been retrained on the service side of things.

I really hope that you will revisit the Coquetvale again soon to see the changes we have made, and I am sure you will have a pleasant stay.

Many Thanks

Lee

A great 2 night stay through Groupon. The room was warm and clean, plenty of hot water for the bath. The bed was very comfortable. The room was spacious. A good breakfast, I particularly liked the Northumberland sausages. An excellent base for exploring Rothbury and surrounding countryside.

This historic hotel had been under new stewardship for only six weeks at the time of our two night stay. The bedrooms are lovely and the staff attentive and polite. The decorators were working throughout the duration of our stay but never encroached and we accepted this as work in progress and general improvement and were offered a discount due to this inconvenience. This hotel has great potential and the standard of accommodation coupled with superb food means we'll be back upon completion of the renovations.

Hi Jim

It was a pleasure having you stay, and glad you enjoyed it. I am glad that the decorators didn't bother you too much, and hopefully next time you visit there will be a lot more improvements to the hotel.

Many thanks again.

Had a one night break with a voucher through Groupon.
Arrived on the Friday evening, received a warm welcome from the staff and checked in with no fuss at all before quickly getting settled into our neat, clean, well presented, and very comfy room. A glass of complimentary wine in the room before having a great meal in the restaurant. The food was amazing - King of Steaks - best steak I've ever had. The drinks were reasonably priced and we enjoyed a great evening chatting with the staff in the bar and other residents.
Very warm and accommodating staff - had planned to leave very early in the morning and they offered to get up early to sort out breakfast for us but in the end we changed plans so we could leave later and enjoy the lovely breakfast they offer.
The hotel has a great charm, a lovely old building which has a lot of character.
Will definitely be going back again in the future.

Dear Guest

Many thanks for taking the time to write a nice review on the hotel. You probably saw when you visited that we were refurbishing the hotel. This is now complete in all bedrooms and also the public corridors. We hope that you can visit us again soon, to see the difference that has been made to make your stay even more comfy.

Other reviewers have commented that it's work in progress, we would agree with this. The staff are above average, but there are some issues which need resolving. Good value for a groupon deal but we had to request the wine included in the deal

Dear Guest

Thanks for the review.

I would agree that the hotel has been working progress, and just to update you on developments. We have now completed the decoration of all public corridors and bedrooms, we have now laid all carpets and completed the hotel refurbishment. Our chef is about to launch his own new Spring, summer menu, and all staff training is underway. The next project is the outdoor seating area, and comfy seating for the bar. This is a massive project, however i hope that you will agree we have made some headway towards making the guest experience the best we can.

we look forward to welcoming you again soon.

Best regards

Lee

Had a two night break (Groupon Voucher) at the Coquetvale in Rothbury.
We have stayed at the Coquetvale several times over the last six years and we have always enjoy our stay.
It is not the most luxurious of hotels, but the rooms are always clean and comfortable.
We dined in the Italian restaurant one evening and had breakfast every morning, my husband had the eggs benedict one morning and the poached eggs the next and enjoyed both dishes.
The Coquetvale has a charm of its own, it is an honest hotel, what you see is what you get.
It is a cosy hotel which delivers an enjoyable stay and it manages to pull you back time and time again, it is as comfortable as a well worn pair slippers.
Super base for exploring the delights of Rothbury, Cragside, Alnwick, Morpeth.

Room Tip: We prefer the larger older rooms rather than the new ones on the top floor.

Dear Guest

Thanks so much for your comments. I am writing to let you know that the 'well worn pair of slippers' have been given a new lease of life. I would totally agree we have a charm, therefore we have invested money into the refurbishment of all bedrooms and public areas with redecoration, carpets and much more. Along with the new menu launch coming in the next few weeks, and staff training completed. We hope to keep the charm, whilst feeling like a brand new pair of slippers.

Take care, and thanks till next time.
