This pub is not smart but the room was clean, warm and comfortable and the place is well run. The breakfast is well above average, with alternatives to the usual English. The restaurant is popular. I've stayed in much worse places at twice the price!

We had booked this room to attend a friend's birthday party in the village.
As my wife and I are both keen walkers we decided to combine the trip with a walk in some nearby woods. The weather was cold with a lot of snow so we looked forward to our stay in a warm room with a long hot bath.
Unfortunately this was not to be!
On arrival at around 2:30 we were shown to room 3, to find that the central heating radiator was cold, although there was an electric oil-filled heater available. I suspect that this room had not been occupied for a while and therefore not been heated during one of the coldest periods of the year, as it took several hours for the temperature to be comfortable.
Our baths were also a disappointment, having to be taken in water which was little more than lukewarm. It should be noted that we we bathed following a walk into the town and a drink in the bar, so ample time had passed for the management to have made hot water available to the room. Ironically the central heating radiator and hot water were working well when we arrived back from our party at 12:30 in the morning.
On the plus side, the staff were helpful and the Black Sheep was good as was breakfast but it appears that heating economies are being made, to the detriment of guest's comfort.

The Good:
The food in the restaurant was excellent. The pub and guest rooms were very clean. The beer was good and very cold. The staff were friendly. The town was quiet nice.

The bad:
This is a pub with guest rooms. The pub is a bit grotty - see photo's. Even the recently renovated restaurant (which can be seen on the Pub's website) superficially looks good, however, still has Wood-chip! Our Bathroom had no shower.

I was dissapointed to read the review of July 30th posted on your website, I was not aware that a review had been left. In response I would like to say that the pub is not grotty, we are certainly not a city centre theme bar all chrome and bright lights but a proper country village pub with a comfortable friendly bar with great beer and popular restaurant. I wasnt aware that the use of woodchip was an offence, the room is freshly painted and very comfortable. The room that the reviewer stayed in is the last room in the pub without a shower and is in need of updating in that respect, but to say it is grotty is unfair.
