My husband and I stayed at SBC from April 8 to 15. I have one word to say, it was amazing. We had read all the reviews and were a little nervous. But, as seasoned travellers we did not let it bother us. We have stayed at a variety of resorts, the Riu resorts (Jamaica and Cancun), Superclubs (Jamaica and Curaco) as well as several reosrts in St. Martin and Cuba so we know what to expect from resorts.

Arriving in St. Kitts airport is even a great experience. The people on this island are top notch, they are so friendly. They do not have the huge buses here, they transport you in a van, so once the van is full you leave - no waiting for the slower people!

The hotel is about a 5 min drive from the airport with wonderful view of the ocean along the way.

When we arrived at the hotel, we were checked in right away, but told that since our flight was early, our room was not quite ready, would we like to get lunch or wait. We decided to wait since we saw Jason coming with a tray of ice cold drinks. We ended up waiting about 3 min and they said our room was ready and they acutally showed us to our room, gave us a mini tour of the resort along the way and showed us how to use everything in our room.

NOTE: the only rooms on the resort with in-room safes are the poolside cottages but they do have a safe at the front desk - we kept our stuff there with no problems.

We stayed in a gardenview room (Room 225) and due to the location of our room, we could see the ocean (score!) We fed the little birds on our balcony every morning and we even saw a mongoose run across the lawn - I wouldn't worry about them during the day or night my husband and I were up every morning about 5:30 - 6:00 so it was early when we saw it. Our room was huge, massive! And the beds are so so comfortable that I acutally took the sheets off to see what kind of mattress it was. - Serta

The food is so so good. They had soup at every lunch and dinner, they did not reheat anything for the next day. We had lamb, beef, pork, shrimp. You name we had it. The lunch buffet also had a menu you could order from - I would highly suggest the bugers, they are so good. Fresh fruit and juice at breakfast. And my favorite was the drinking water - I must have drank 2 or 3 litres a day it was so so good.

There really is not much to do at the resort itself, but the Marriott with it's huge Casino is only a 5 min walk - some people will tell you it takes 30 min to get there but it doesn't if you are a good walker. We went there to do some shopping since we did not go into Basseterre and the Marriott's prices are out of this world - it is so expensive, it's almost stupid. If you want some cool little souveniors just go to the variety store at the resort. We got some great t-shirts, mugs, photo albums and picture frames there. I would suggest taking some EC dollars with you since it's just easier and forces you to spend!

The beach in front of the resort is nice. People say that it's really windy, which it was but the last 2 or 3 days of our holiday there was no wind and it was really hot. We stayed in the shade most of the time since it's important to protect the skin.

We miss 'our group' of people that we met down there - Ed and Barb, Deb and Charlie, Marie and her mom Bev, Orlando and Agatha - maybe we will see all of you again!

We are already thinking about the next trip to Sugar Bay. If you are looking for a nice, quiet place where you will meet other wonderful guests, wonderful staff and have amazing views and sun I would not hesitate to suggest Sugar Bay. It is truly a gem.

My husband and I stayed at the beautiful Sugar Bay Club from 4/8 until 4/15 and absolutely loved it!! We were greeted in the lobby with a drink, check in was a breeze. The hotel staff was absolutely wonderful for our entire stay...very friendly and helpful. We were always greeted with a smile!! A very special hello to Yasmine & Jason!!
Sugar Bay is a smaller resort, very quiet and relaxing atmosphere. The grounds are beautiful, lots of lovely flowers. They are working very hard trying to improve the landscaping - watering constantly. There are 2 pools, adult and childrens. Very clean and well maintained.
We stayed in a cottage near the pool . We absolutely loved it. It was very inviting, warm, quaint and always very clean. Our nights were so very quiet, none of the banging of doors that we have heard in the past all night long in the larger resorts. We sat on our little porch each AM with our coffee. So very relaxing!!
We stayed all inclusive. The food was great!! Breakfast was a buffet with the usual menu - eggs, bacon, sausage, fruits, pastries, etc. You could also order an omelet if desired. The restaurant looks out over a golf course with mountains in the background. A beautiful way to start every day!
Lunch was down by the pool. Buffet with at least 3 different main choices or you could order from a menu.
Dinner was buffet 6 nights(2 by the pool), ala carte one. I am a pretty fussy eater, not liking a lot of the "unusual" stuff. I was very impressed with the menu choices at Sugar Bay. Always a fish, chicken, beef or lamb choice. Nice variety of foods each night. The chef was so kind & always willing to please!!
Drinks were as plenitful as you wanted them to be!! The bartenders were eager to please & generous with the liquor.
I was very apprehensive about the beach at Sugar Bay from other postings I had read. The beach is on the Atlantic side & very rough, not swimmable. I dont enjoy going in the ocean any way, prefer the pool, so this was not a problem for me. The Caribbean is just a short 10 min. walk away if you enjoy swimming in the ocean.
There was plenty of beach to walk on which we did every AM and several times during the day. We spent almost every afternoon sitting & reading at the beach listening to the waves crash in. Oh, so relaxing!! The morning sun was too intense for us at the beach so we preferred sitting by the pool. But by afternoon, shade was available under the permanent umbrellas on the beach.
If you enjoy a quiet, relaxing, laid back resort, the Sugar Bay is for you.
Would return again in a heart beat!! Love it, loved it loved it!!

If you are looking for a quiet and laid-back hotel, this is the place. All the main essentials work, namely hot showers, clean rooms, soundless air conditioning, well kept grounds, no extraneous construction noises (no construction nearby) etc.
The food and bar staff are attentive and wonderful - Jamilla, Keeva, Yasim (always with a song and a hug), Lesley, Jason, Daviniah.
The chef is something elses - we have never eaten such consitiently excellent food! And he is a happy friendly soul who is obviously enjoying his work at the Sugar Bay Club.
The manager and his wife are most personable and available at all times and thier rapport with the staff certainly promotes the happy environment of the hotel.
This is not the hotel for you if you like lots of noise and actvity, however all the return clients that we met kept coming back to enjoy the island ambiance of the Sugar Bay Club and all it has to offer.
We found absolutley nothing to complain about the Sugar Bay Club. We look forward to returning at the next opportunity.

...April 01/-April th/2006....it was our first time to St.Kitts/Nevis ...
we were (two couples ...travelling from Toronto,Canada)...
our home away from home ... The Sugar Bay Club ...we decided to go all -inclusive!!! for our first time to St.Kitts!!!
It was fabulous!!!
The Sugar Bay Club...was beyond our expectations after reading some other reviews!

Hat's off to the very hard working staff....Calvin,Yasmin,all the Jasmins..James A....just to mention a few...for all the amazing, very special care that you gave us!!!...for all the times that you all went out of your way to make our stay at the Sugar Bay Club...so very special!!!!!
One that I will never forget!!!Thank-you!! All so much!!!!

......before arriving..........we were a little concerned about what the food was going to be like...based on some past reviews...but to our wonderful surprize..all the meals were just awesome!!!!

I have on a fewl occasions... dined in some very high end restaurants...our meals at the Sugar Bay Club were right up there!!!

There is a new Chef on St.Kitts......"Gary" at the Sugar Bay Club...a super fellow and an amazing Chef!!! who takes a great deal of pride and care!!!

The food was so fantastic..so much so....that we looked forward to every meal... it was all good..from...the amazing appeitizers....to entres...from.. catch of the day, or chicken,or beef/or whatever it was... beyond great!!..lots of veggies/fresh fruit.. and always a great salad bar.....not to mention the bar-b-ques..and ohhh his soups were to die for..Ohhhh and lovely deserts......we can't say enough!!!!Lots of variety, lots of choices..never a repeat menu...all made with such amazing care and wonderful presentaion!!! if you wanted something and you didn't see it...just ask and... it was there for you... in a few moments..I was also very impressed with the fact there was not a huge gross amount of food like so many other all inclusives ...that just all goes to waste...
...the house wine wasn't great..but you have the option of purchasing from their wine menu!

Kudos to Chef Gary/..I'm so sorry that I cannot recall your last name ...just lovely!!!!Cheers!!!

We stayed in a pool side room...we loved it...the bathroom was a little worn...but clean clean clean!
We don't like air conditioning so with our padio doors open at night and the ceiling fan on and the air off .....perfect total quiet...except for the sound of crashing waves of in the distance...

...from our 2nd floor room...all buildings were only 2-stories on the property...a very nice view of the very well kept...grounds... again... very clean pools/ 2 to choose from and all the beautiful gardens!!!!Flora and fona galore!!
a few cats wondering around but not a problem for us!

Sugar Bay Club beach is on the Atlantic side...the water beautiful to look at, but,be carefull... really strong waves and undertow...we walked the beach every morning and every evening...you can walk all the way over to the huge Marriott hotel next door (about a 30/40 minute walk there...in one direction and quite a good stretch the other way about 20 min....we always had the beach to ourselves...so if you like crowds don't stay at the Sugar Bay Club!!!
The Caribbean side is a easy 15 minute walk along the road past the traffic circle and across a grassy flat field..where we saw a herds of goats coming and going....once there ... you will find Timothy Beach, the Timothy Beach Resort to one side.....a few more people ...and much calmer waters... great snorkeling,a few beach bars...a friendly crowd...and amazing sunsets!!!
We also made it to as many of the other beaches on the Island ...all beautiful... each very different...from white powder to black sand...lunch at the beautiful Ottley's Plantion/Inn.
The Botanical Garden at the Romney Manor and the Caribelle Batik were my favorite places...this is where i purchased my gifts to bring back home...another morning... walking around the Capital Basseterre /around the market area and the Duty Free shops for the cruise ships that come in and shop till you drop!!...all ten minute ride from the Sugar Bay Club...

Some cab drivers double as tour guides .....all were really great...You can go from place to place and arrange a pick-up time to return ...or book them for 2-3 hours or the entire day!....no meters in the cabs ...so negotiate your price...
All the drivers ... charge around the same price...we thought the prices were very very reasonable!!!
Our favorite...was Vincent Lewis.."Who's Loves you Baby??" everyone knows him...just ask around...you can reach him on his cell.

We also spent a day on the Island of Nevis ..took the public ferry across about 20-minutes ride or so and around $8.US each..Spectacular views of both Islands!!.
Cab drivers are waiting for you at the Nevis dock...we found Vilmoth Jones...or he found us!
We asked him to take us up to the Nesbitt Plantation at the north end of Nevis about a 30 minute drive......where we spent the morning on the beachswimming, walking for miles and took shelter in their very nice beach bar... from an awesome 20.min. storm that blew in!!
It was over as quickly as it blew in...and the sun was out in no time.... enjoyed the powdery white sand beach lined with palm trees as far as the eyes could see and lunch served to us on the beach... excellent...caught a glimse of a mongoose!!on the plantation grounds..enjoyed the infinity pool...the hot tub was too hot for me!!!!
.Vilmoth picked us up mid- afternoon as we arranged with him...and we asked him to let us off at the Four Seasons,(very very nice resort...but sad to say it has ruined the stretch of natural beach front!)... were we checked it all out and the walked the miles of natural beach ...(stopped at a "real" Nevis beach bar for a cool drink)and back to the docks to catch the last public ferry at 5:00pm.
All beaches on St. Kitts are public...so you can enjoy them all!
The Four Seasons has their own ferry that will take you back and forth ...if you have the $$$$$$...we choose the public ferry.
We didn't have enough time on Nevis to see and do everything on our list...like the natural hot springs or their botanical gardens...but it's good to leave something for our next time back!

The Sugar Bay Club has nightly entertainment..a piano player,a small but fabulous steel band"The Red Maple Leafs!"..or another evening a 2-pc.jazzy /caribbean music......exactly the perfect way to end each perfect day!

So if you are looking for a small warm intimate experience we highly recommend the Sugar Bay Club!!

If you want the wow and zow of a hugh hotel.... please go next door to the Marriot!!!!

...the only down side was that we where only there for a weeks stay...and we didn't want to leave!!!

There was a little trepidation after reading some of the reviews but it exceeded our expectation. For an all inclusive you can expect the food to be disappointing but they have a new chef and the results were very good, varied and interesting. The rooms were very spacious and the finish was quite adequate bearing in mind it is only 3 star. The plumbing worked and there was always hot water. The staff were very friendly as were all the islanders. The 2 pools were pleasant and the grounds attractive. The hotel is on the Atlandic which has the prevailing wind and can be a little rough but a 10 minute stroll to the Caribbean was a welcomee bit of exercise to work off the excess food, not to mention the abundant alcoholic cocktails. The beaches are not up to the picture postcard standard of some islands but nowhere has everything. The bottom line is I could recommend this hotel to anyone. If you want 5 star go to the Marriott 5 minutes walk away, it was fantastically awful - if you want somewhere laid back and local it would be hard to beat the Sugar Bay Club for value for money.

I hope the title of this review does not scare you off but the inn does need more work to be a first class place. Yes the rooms were large and clean but the baths were very 1970 style with tub and shower and not very hot water in the shower. The grounds were a bit over grown and the grass was not very green for a tropical island retreat but we don't eat or lay on the grass so I guess it is a small matter. The staff was very friendly and always ready to help in anyway that they could but still they have the Caribbean slowness much the same as on all the other islands.
The food was very good but most of the time it was rather English in the menu. The head chef has just been on the job for a few months and seams to be trying to get the food up to standard. The bar has the normal drinks and they don't short you on the liquor that they put in them so watch that they don't get then too strong. The hotel was mostly English guest which is a nice change as they tend to be very friendly and have a very different take on the world than us Yankees. The beach is small and the water is rough so swimming at the hotel beach is out of the question. The hotel is old and small but quaint and is a nice place to rest as not much going on. They have no onsite dive shop so had to ride the dive truck 2 miles to the dive boat each morning which was ok. We dove with Mark at St Kitts Divers and I recommend him for all your diving needs. If you are looking for the big fast moving resort stay at the Marriott for 3 times the price. For some reason I have never been able to swim in more than one pool at a time or drink or eat at more than one place at a time so we don't need all the different places like at the mega resorts. Check out my pictures and enjoy.

We visited Sugar Bay for 8 days in March of 2006. We found it to be a clean, laid back type of resort. It's small which tends to restrict the activities that are provided and the beach was not very good, but more on that later.

Service: Overall the service was pretty good. The waitstaff was friendly and attentive at the various meals. Everyone greeted you with a smile on their face and tried to make your stay pleasant.

Rooms: The rooms were large and brightly colored and most important of all clean. There were a few very small sugar ants but that happens in the tropics and certainly weren't a major problem. They could have done a better job of providing soap and shampoo so you may want to bring your own.

Food: The food overall was pretty good. As an all inclusive, the food ranked pretty well. The breakfasts were a bit monotonous, but then breakfast generally are. You could have cooked to order omlets and eggs whiched helped a great deal. The coffee could have used improvement. We left the resort for most lunches so I don't have any real comments on them. Dinners were really very good and often great. The chef has been there a short time but his food was excellent. Be sure to try all of the flavors of ICE CREAM, it is truly devine.

Beverages: The drinks were good and the service was friendly. You may have to assist them in making your favorite drink but once they figure it out, they get it right.

Beach: This was truly the downside for me. The beach is small and very rough waves. It is on the Atlantic side and you really can't swimin it and the beach is no a place you want to sit for very long. However, 5 minutes away is Timothy beach which is on the Carribean and the beach was nice and the snorkeling good. We spent 3 very lovely days there.

Tours: The tour assistance wasn't very helpful and somethings only run limited days. I can strongly recommend the Catamaran trip for a beautiful day. Also, take the ferry to Nevis and a taxi to Turtle Bay. Both provide a nice way to spend the day.

Overall St Kitts is a very small island and there aren't any of the mega resorts except the Marriott next door. Go here if you just want peace quiet and a place to read a book.
