“St. Kitts wedding and Honeymoon”
Reviewed 26 November 2013

The new wife and I had our wedding and honeymoon at the St. Kitts Marriott. We stayed 10 days on the island at this resort. The wedding coordinator (Alexia) was excellent, and made sure everything went smooth. The hotel is very nice, but needs some maintenance. It is relatively new (10 years old) but the workmanship is not like back at the states (maybe lack of skilled trades). Little things like the spout for the tub was not contacting the wall by an inch, rust on railings, half-assed repairs to lighting, etc. were evident. Overall the resort was gorgeous however. I think when another large resort moves to the island and gives the Marriott competition these little things will be taken care of.
The food was awesome at the resort, if not a little pricey. If you can, get a meal plan, since there is little else to eat as far as restaurants on the island. Just a lot of holes in the wall really. The pool and swim up bar are a popular place, but they close early (7pm). In the "off" season, many of the restaurant rotate openings.
The water at the Marriott was awesome, if not a little rough (waves). Snorkeling on the island is not the best, but diving was okay. There are few beaches to snorkel off of and not a really well developed offshore reef, since it is a volcanic island not a coral island. Watch out for Sea Urchins on the south coast of the island, they are everywhere. The best beaches are on the south peninsula. The windward side of the island is rough (waves), the leeward side is populated (hard to get to or dirty beaches).
Renting a car was not necessary here, but a trip or two around the island is fun, but a car is not needed for more than a few days. The local taxi services also offer tours, and are not too expensive, $20 - $35 a person (depending on group size) to see many of the sights. As is typical with an island, drivers are nuts, but I had no issues driving for all 10 days.
The islanders are the friendliest I have ever met, and I have been travelling to various Caribbean islands for 30 years.
The weather in early November was awesome, steady 5-15 mph winds, 90 degrees, and it rained for only a few minutes on only two days.
Definitely do several of the offered adventures that the hotel will set up for you. The ATV tour, zip lines, diving, catamaran, etc. are all fun, but not cheap. They set it up for you, pick you up, drop you off wherever the adventure begins, then drive you back to the hotel when done.
As stated, I have been to many islands, and this one I would say is middle of the pack.
Once it gets more developed it may lose that small island feel, and gain some nicer amenities and services. If you want to sit on a beach at a resort, drink boat drinks, and forget about your life back home this is the place to go. If you are looking for snorkeling, a lot of great restaurants, and a variety of beaches to visit, you may want to try elsewhere.
There were very few children at the resort, which could be a positive or a negative, depending on what you are looking for. I would say the island on a whole is more adult friendly and oriented rather than kid-friendly.

Room Tip: Get a meal plan to save a lot of dough. Eat breakfast up the road to save a lot of money. Only rent...

I just had a great time in St. Kitts with my wedding party. The Marriott facilities are beautiful, and clean, and have a classy Caribbean feel to them. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The concierge was also helpful, but the places they suggested were, okay, but felt a bit like tourist traps. Met a friendly local guy that suggested all the best local spots to check out. I found him on Facebook at 'St. Kitts Island Life'. He will help point you in the right direction at no cost. super helpful. The Island is beautiful, so is the Marriott! Can't wait to return!

This resort is the largest in St. Kitts. Beautiful spot on the ocean with a large pool, spa, bars and restaurants. Our room had a spectacular ocean view, but soundproofing isn't ideal. Floors are marble, sound travels. Every night there was a whistling noise that we heard in the room and traced it to the ventilation in the bathroom. Luckily, shutting the bathroom door helped eliminate it, but it was somewhat annoying. The housekeepers weren't on top of replacing towels. They'd clean the room, but forget to restock. The check in process is really slow, especially on weekends. We waited over two hours in the lobby on a Saturday, and I heard from others their check-in was just as slow. The concierge was little help when we asked questions. All in all, a large kind of impersonal resort. If you're okay with this level of service then you'll be fine here. We've traveled a lot and have come to prefer a smaller hotel with more attention to detail and service. We chose this resort really because there was little else to choose in St. Kitts and we wanted to be on the water. The beach is lots of sand, no greenery and many metal palapas. Not your typical tropical beach, although the mountains and Mt. Nevis in the background are attractive. Lots of noise and activity at the pool, again, great if this is what you're looking for....not so great if this isn't what you want. The Cafe Bohemia and Calypso Cafe are easy and reasonable choices for breakfast and lunch. We ate at Blu, and the food was good, but atmosphere and service were less than desirable. Certainly, not the best Marriott I've ever stayed at, but St. Kitts itself is a very scenic spot.

My husband and I just returned from our week's stay at the Marriott. We had a hotel room on the 4th floor. Upon arrival, we were handed a cold cloth and a choice of a cold beer or rum punch which hit the spot after flying all day. We arrived around 3:00p and were checked in within 15 minutes. We went to our room and unpacked. After unpacking, we noticed there was a high pitch squealing noise coming from the toilet, like every 30 sec - 2 minutes. We called the front desk and surprisingly a maintenance man was at our door within ten minutes. My husband seemed to know what the problem was a suggested an inexpensive part needed to be replaced. The maintenance man fidgeted with the toilet for about ten minutes and exclaimed it to be fixed. We did not hear the noise again until the next time we flushed the toilet, then again every 30 sec - 2 minutes. The only time we were in the room was to sleep, so we just turned the water knob off before the toilet when we went to bed so the noise would not keep us awake, then turned it back on every morning when we woke. The lobby is open to air which can be hot if there is not an ocean breeze coming through, which there was everyday and night except for check out day (funny how that happened). Since the lobby is open to air, it can get loud at night as the crowd's voices carry to your room. The first night, they had a live band from 8p - 10p in the lobby. We all danced and let our hair blow to the ocean breeze. The inside lobby has happy hour everyday from 6p - 7p, $4 rum punch, $6 colada's and daquiri's. We enjoyed several happy hour's in the lobby and brought pizza or salad in from the pizza shack to eat with our drinks for dinner. The pizza shack has the best pizza I have ever eaten, some special sauce they put on it. The three main restaurants on site: Italian, Steak, Seafood are extremely expensive. We found the pizza shack and eating off the property at the strip to be the best value for us. The Bohemia restaurant has an outside area which was reasonably priced. We discovered the Calypso cafe has a nice mixed fruit for $4.50, perfect for breakfast along with our cheerios, bananas, milk we bought at the grocery store which was in walking distance. The grocery store had paper products but no bowls for our cereal. Thankfully, we found a three pack tupperware container that worked well. There are a lot of restaurants within walking distance that are reasonably priced. We went to the Thai next door Karma, Indian close by Bombay Blues, Cathy's at the strip, Shipwreck beach (taxi), Palms Court Gardens (taxi). I will write individual reviews later for these. It all depends on what you prefer to spend your money on really. If you are like expensive restaurants, then I'm sure these are very good because I heard very good things about them from other guests. We personally prefer to spend our money on excursions (Leeward Charter trip to Nevis and exploring different places). Therefore, we try to find good food for less money which we did. Speaking of money, Marriott has a casino extending off of the lobby. The casino is air conditioned and the resort gave us $10 each play money which we enjoyed using. The spent Sunday and Friday all day on the beach at the Marriott. The beach is great, it has a rock barrier to prevent the waves from crashing into you too hard. You can snorkel off the beach as well. We checked out a noodle to snorkel with for free and had our own snorkel gear. They do rent out snorkel gear for a reasonable price. You have to be a decent swimmer to snorkel on their beach because the water is a little rough, would not suggest it for children. The beach if full of canopies that provide shade and lounge chairs which didn't seem to fill up with people until around 11am. We loved the main pool. We spent every evening in the heated pool. It is broke down so well. At one end, you have the swim up bar for the party people. Then the volleyball area for the active people. Then the shallow sides for the children, then the other end for those like me who love to just float around and relax. The pool chairs are not that great, have a whole where the two halfs come together which is not that comfortable and the tops do not provide much shade. Thankfully, there are areas around the pool that provide shade you can move your chair to. The main pool has happy hour from 5p -6p with Rum and Vodka drinks only. Not a great time for happy hour as most people are either at dinner or getting ready for dinner. The staff everywhere were very nice and greeted you each time they passed you. The hotel was very clean with the exception of the fountain area. Overall, great stay and we will definitely put the Marriott on our list of places to return to. Oh, forgot to mention that the beds and pillows were the best ever, so comfortable. We did sleep with the air conditioner fan on high everynight to drown out the lobby noise.

Room Tip: Get a room away from the lobby, noise gets loud at night and carries to your room.

It's a beautiful property, however, there is not much to do there. It's a very quiet, laid back island, so if you are looking for peace and quiet, that's the place to go!
It's also very expensive--they have their own currency, and our dollar is not worth much.

So far so good. Super large and clean room. Maintenance being done all over the resort. Helpful and smiling staff. No problem at check-in. Our lost bag from delta flight delivered directly to our room. Fantastic beach and plenty of beach chairs and towels. I have no idea about the pools - i don't fly 6 hours to hang out by the pool. As for the restaurants, no comment yet as we've been eating off the hotel property. One issue so far - happy hour drinks don't include any beachy drinks, just regular bar stock. I guess i'll have to make them myself in my very well-equipped kitchen. Got to go use the blender. C u.

The Marriott is perfect for the traveler who wants comfort and convenience in one package. There may be other hotels on the island that are more quaint and personal. You can still get that feeling at the Marriott with multiple pools, bungalows that are away from the main hotel building, and intimate high quality restaurants that serve very good food. If you don't want to stay on property to eat, a number of top rate restaurants are within a short walk or drive of the resort. Another benefit of a resort this size is the opportunity to meet and make friends with people from all over the world to share meals and activities with. The staff are attentive and addressed issues that we had quickly. We will stay there again and would feel comfortable taking our children there as well.

Room Tip: The rooms in the buildings outside the main hotel are larger. The ones on the "backside"...
