“A great getaway”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 February 2014

We booked this pretty last minute but were pleasantly surprised and had a fabulous week away here. Reviews were mixed on the hotel and its food but we had a great experience. The Monday night lobster buffet which is buffet for salads and dessert with a huge plated delicious lobster tail was great. The Italian restaurant and the Steak house all were great. The smaller places were good and handy. Everyone was friendly. We found a couple of well rated places like Marshalls off property a bit disappointing. I even got a pork tenderloin that was really not tender so judge for yourself.

Property is lovely as was the room. WiFi is sketchy so ask for lobby code for access in public areas .Pools were nice but decorative pools could have been cleaner. Nice to have a water dispenser brought in around pool.

Biggest hotel on the island. Front desk staff very helpful. Trip to Nevis was neat going on ferry to see islands from the water but Nevis is not too exciting but pretty. Highlights of the tour were hotels like the Four Seasons whereas island tour of St Kitts was fabulous esp the fort which is a UNESCO site. Wear good shoes for climbing stairs for a great view.

The St. Kitts Marriott may not be liked by some locals very much but the resort is great for tourists. My wife and I were there for a week last week and enjoyed it.

Check-in was smooth and maintenance man came within 10 minutes to fix our slider lock. We were on the ground floor of the Basseterre House, one of 16 Garden Houses each consisting of three floors of spacious rooms including flat screen tv, easy chair, table and chairs, original (and often) local works of art, jet tub, bidet, full-length mirror, and closet with safe. Rooms were not great for noise as we could hear our neighbors arguing a couple of nights. Who argues in paradise? Relax, Mon!

If staying connected while there is a concern, free wi-fi is available in the large lobby and also by the main pool. Otherwise, it is $12.95 per day to access the internet in your room.

The pools are a highlight with covered chairs and/or umbrellas available at all three pools if you're early enough in the day to snag them. Many of the resort activities occur around the main pool which results in loud, annoying music much of the day, but it ends at 6:00PM once Happy Hour is over. The whirlpools are not hot tubs, meaning they are not heated, and were the same temperature as the pools. The pools are open until 11:00PM but the wind keeps it a little cool for swimming at night. The hut where you get your beach/pool towels also provides a sign-out for activities including bocce, shuffleboard, board games, and snorkeling equipment.

What's even better is the windy, oceanfront beach with many gazebos (with beach chairs and a table) available to protect you from the hot sun and sand. The ocean swimming is very underrated here since the water is quite warm and some well-placed boulders create a couple of beautiful shallow swimming areas. It's probably the only safe swimming area on the Atlantic side of the island. We loved the ocean swimming so much, we never even swam in the resort pools! We saw a couple of vendors working the beach but they never approached us (avoid eye contact!) and seemed very low pressure. There is also food and drinks available from resort wait-staff by during the day on the beach. Also, the beach-walking is beautiful and largely undeveloped to the north of the resort for a long distance.

As far as drinking, there are four bars: the swim-up bar in the main pool, the open-air bar next to the main pool/cafe, Keys Bar on the third floor above the lobby, and the lobby bar.

Food is quite expensive overall on the island. For resort dining, there are the high-end seafood and steakhouse restaurants which we did not visit as well as more affordable options. We would have gone to La Cucina which is medium-priced ($20-30), but it was closed on Sunday. Calypso was our favorite option on the grounds since there were two sections to choose from. The entry area is cafe-style with counter-ordering for coffee, non-alcoholic drinks, pastries, desserts, ice cream, snacks, and light breakfast fare where you seat yourself or get food to go. Continuing further, you will be met by a hostess for restaurant seating and a fuller menu of local and Americanized dishes priced around $15-25. The cheapest option is also the least exciting with appetizers and sandwiches at the pool/beach restaurant ranging from $5-20.

The spa was very nice but expensive as expected. I needed a haircut which was $29 plus tax and service charge and my wife got the Tip to Toe treatment for $179 plus tax and service charge. Everything has tax and 12.5% service charge included. They do make it easy to charge everything to your room though.

The casino was what we expected with electronic slots and table games. We were given a free $10 card to redeem at the casino when checking in to the resort, and then in the casino we also got to spin the big wheel to add free money to our cards ranging from $5-500. We were able to turn our free $35 into a real $83.

We rented a car but it probably wasn't necessary since we didn't use it every day and taxis are always available for a government-regulated $16 one-way airport to Marriott, $24 one-way to Cockleshell Beach, which is an awesome beach. (Find Debbie's blue chairs and umbrellas near the east end of the beach for $5 per person per day rentals.) There is a Hertz car rental satellite office in the resort down from the lobby past the shops (combined with the resort business center) with limited hours of about 10:00AM to 5:00PM.

Overall, service is slow and nonchalant since you're on island time as others have noted, but it's also almost always very friendly. The locals like to talk about their local flair in food and sites and the resort staff are not exceptions to this, so make sure you venture away from the resort to see the beauty and friendliness outside of the resort's groomed expanse.

We have been to St Kitts and this hotel over a dozen times now. It is our home away from home. Our first visit took some time getting used to the slow service and care free attitude of everyone at the resort. But, if you embrace that lifestyle during your vacation, you wont regret it. Just remember, your on vacation now; relax, slow down, and enjoy it. The property is beautiful with a beach that is one of the best in the Caribbean. All of the rooms are very large and comfortable. I don't think this resort or island for that matter, is ideal for children or young couples looking to party. The island is not very commercialized. But if looking for fun and relaxation, nothing beats this place. Casino is really nice and updated for the Caribbean. People on the island are extremely friendly. Fresh spiny lobster and catch of the day at most of the restaurants. The Marriott is very open and gives you that island feel. Breakfast buffet is above average with a nice selection. Steakhouse very good as well. If you are looking for a true island vacation with relaxation, this is your place.

Room Tip: Stay in one of the suites next to the pools

We were on a cruise ship stop and got a room on points for the day.

We never saw the room, but used the beach , pool and restaurant facilities.

Nice beach, not the best in the Caribbean, but nice.

Ample cabanas on the beach- more than I have seen at other hotels. Relatively easy to get one and it was New Years week.

Staff very helpful, pool nice, and food in beachside restaurant was really good.

Very close to cruise terminal so that was a plus :)

Simply a great location with wonderful staff. Problem was with the managers, if indeed they are at the hotel. I suspect they may be the Great Oz behind the curtain because you can only talk by phone. I went for week in January with wife and two teenage daughters. When we checked in the internet was not working in the room. Bummer for teenagers so i called to ask. What followed was three days of waiting for a person to come to the room and conflicting stories about if the internet worked anywhere in the hotel. After three days we chaged room to another room with no internet. They did chage us to a room overlooking a construction site. Nothing says i am sorry like trucks in the morning. After three days of frustration the Director did offer 30,000 Marriott points; however, she must have had a chage of heart because she reduced it to 15,000 when it was time credit the points. Dirty pool lady dirty pool. Go for the location goor go for the great staff go for the wonderful local folks, Patsy's on the strip was the best, just hope you don't have to deal with hotel management.

Room Tip: Rooms in main hotel not facing ocean overlook a construction site

Our card-playing club spent its annual New Year's trip at the St. Kitts Marriott, and the six of us enjoyed ourselves very much. Although the hotel isn't new, and some of the wear is beginning to show, it's extremely clean, the rooms are comfortable, and there are a variety of restaurants, all of which are very good. The beach is lovely, although the ocean is a little rough, and there are three lovely pools, one with a swim-up bar. The Bohemia Beach Bar and Grill is right between the ocean and the main pool, and has good drinks and casual food, and the Blu Seafood Restaurant and La Cucina Italian Restaurant both have excellent "specials" nights. The Calypso near the Lobby Bar serves breakfast and lunch in a dining room, and also serves snacks until midnight and dinner in the Bar--the food there is very good, too. There is also a Pizza Shack and a Royal Grille Steak House, which is the most expensive restaurant on the grounds, but we didn't try either of them. There is a small shopping plaza with interesting things, a busy casino, and good-looking tennis courts. And of course, there's the only golf course on St. Kitts.

Room Tip: If you want an ocean view room, don't get one on the first floor because there is wall along the...

Had an amazing stay at the Marriott from January 21-27. The hotel is very clean, the food was above the typical 5 * resorts. The bed was very comfortable. The staff are very courteous. Diana in the SPA is one outstanding individual if you have a chance to indulge in SPA services ask for her. The casino played well. Ladies if you like to play slots, I highly recommend the SEX in the City slot machines. Played all week long as Mr. Big brought on the diamonds.

Room Tip: Oceanside rooms have the excellent views.
