The drive between home and Cornwall is a long one both as a driver and passenger so the family decided that we should break the journey and stop en route. The difficulty was that we had our dog with us and therefore were limited to places that would take him. My wife had identified a Travel Lodge but quite frankly I do not like staying in such impersonal places. I came upon the Greenwood B&B through doing a Google on places near the M5.

We arrived mid afternoon and the imposing Georgian building and its front garden were bathed in sunshine. We were greated by Penny the hostess who was very welcoming and had a family room for me, the wife and 2 grown up offspring (plus dog) and a separate room for Granny. Having settled into the well appointed rooms we noticed that Penny served afternoon tea and we disembarked to the seats on her front lawn. The afternoon teas themselves are worth the trip, Penny makes her own scones and warms them prior to serving. They were light and very tasty. Different varieties of home made jam and clotted cream accompanied them (jam made from home grown fruit), I was in heaven and in danger of burning in the sun!

Penny will serve home made evening meals if arranged in advance and althogh we did not have one I have every confidence that they are wonderful. Instead we had supper at a local pub called The Huntspill which was extremely crowded and the food adequate (but nothing more).

Breakfast was freshly cooked by Penny with every item tasting as if it was freshly picked or had been farmed free range.

I cannot recommend this place highly enough and will not hesitate to return and be greeted by Peny's obvious care and attention and wry sense of humour. Her dogs are also welcoming to strangers!

Additionally the guests can book a massage (which my daughter took advantage of) to really start the holiday in a relaxed frame of mind.

Penny is a really helpful friendly person and nothing is too much bother. We stayed over the weekend and although we were the only couple dining in the evening the food was excellent and Penny was very attentive.

If you want excellent service, comfortable surroundings, relaxing time, then stay over at The Greenwood.

The Greenwood Lodge is an excellent choice for B&B and evening meal. It is an old house, full of character. My bedroom was comfortable and spotlessly clean: it had a comfortable bed, dressing table and flat screen TV as well as ensuite shower/toilet. The owner, Penny, is a fantastic host and a terrific cook. I thoroughly enjoyed an evening meal here and would have no hestitation in recommending guests to eat here. The prices here are very reasonable.

Room Tip: Ring Penny directly to get the best room.

My partner and I, with our Greyhound, received a very warm welcome from the Landlady, Penny and we were shown to our pretty, spotlessly clean and well equipped room. Although evening dinner was available, we chose to eat in a local pub in order to stretch the dog's legs with the walk there and back.
The breakfasts were very tasty and not at all greasy, the bacon and tomatoes having been grilled.
The cream teas, which are offered to guests and non-residents were absolutely 'scrummy'! Homemade, large and light scones served with cream and homemade jam and a generous pot of tea. They are to be recommended.
Friends joined us for part of our long week-end stay and we all commented on the first rate standard of the guest house and service. Penny works very hard and nothing was too much trouble for her.
Apart from a few pubs in the local area, there is nothing around The Greenwood, but it is an excellent base from which to explore North Somerset and the Quantocks provide walks with outstanding views.
A very highly recommended guest house and one to which we hope to return in the not too distant future..

We stayed at The Greenwood (I think the name must have changed from Greenwood Lodge) with friends and their dog - they had selected The Greenwood specifically because it was dog-friendly, but it is decidedly human-friendly too!

Penny says in the information in the lovely rooms that it is important to her that guests enjoy their stay, and she works incredibly hard to make sure they do. I don't think I have ever experienced a more friendly or relaxed atmosphere in a B&B - nothing was too much trouble.

One morning of our stay, all the rooms were occupied and there was a group using the Seminar Room - Penny still managed to prepare and serve the most delicious breakfast for us all single-handed. We also sampled the cream teas (delicious!), and Penny also offers a three-course evening meal.

Our room was small but, again, every detail was looked after - even down to providing a bottle of mineral water and replacing the soap each day.

We had a thoroughly enjoyable, relaxing break in good company.

We have stayed at Greenwood Lodge three times, most recently in March 2009. I guess the fact that we keep returning speaks for itself, as there are several B&Bs and pubs with rooms along the same stretch of road.

The lodge is old and the furniture shows some wear and tear, but that's my only criticism. The landlady is friendly without being overbearing, beds are comfortable, breakfast is delicious, the gardens are well looked after. There are tea and coffee making facilities in the bedrooms. It feels like home from home.

The location is ideal if you're arriving by car as the hotel is close to a main road, but far enough back that you're not disturbed by the almost constant traffic. If you arrive by train, it's a short taxi ride or 30-min walk from the nearest train station (Highbridge & Burnham). There are several pubs and a small corner shop/post office within a short walking distance.

There is a bookcase filled with paperbacks in the living room, as well as a stand with local information, leaflets etc. There is also a "therapy room" on site where you can have aromatherapy massages and reflexology treatments, but we've never tried it.

As B&B's go, this is one of our favourite.

Greenwood Lodge suited us fine for a weekend "get away". It's a bit out from Burnham but that suited us. Decent sized room (we had no 7) and good food. Would we go back? Definitely.
