First of all, I have to say how misunderstood the Landlady of this B & B is!!!

Yes, there is a bannister rule - what no one here mentions is that its 200 years old and understandably wobbly, which is why another bannister is installed on the other side for your use.

Yes if you say you want breakfast at 8.30 then that is when you are expected to appear. Under no circumstances are you forced to have breakfast at a specific time - as you choose what time to breakfast!

There are many other issues I would address here, but actually alot of the comments about her attitude are actually her very dry sense of humour which I thought was brilliant! :)

The rooms are clean, the service fantastic. Nothing has been forgotten, every detail has been taken care of. The garden is wonderful and the chickens great!!!! the food is brilliant - so good in fact that I have now purchased some of Gwyenth's Marmalade! The compote is fantastic and she showed me how its made so Ill be having that for breakfast! nothing was too much trouble, and I have to say Roger is brilliant. Yes he gets moaned at but you know, Gwyneth told us what a darling he is, and how much he does! :)

We had a lovely time here, and I would certainly stay in this wonderful establishment again.

As you can gather from other reviews, the landlady is quite a character and the landlord a real sweetie. Great entertainment value, the breakfast is pretty good (fantastic compote), the accommodation very good. I would probably return, but not for a romantic weekend!

Gwynne and Roger should be commended for their effort. Don't take their rules too seriously; just enjoy your stay.........................................

Unfortunately we didn't check this site before we booked. The landlady was the rudest woman I have ever come across. Thank heaven we only had 1 night booked. When we arrived she told us that since we had booked online we wouldn't get our money back if we didn't like the room! I won't repeat what others have said - it is all true. Also the house was smelly!

We came to Ilex House having read some terrible reviews on TripAdvisor, but we had an open mind. Overall the experience was fun and definitely interesting. Roger was a perfect host, he made us tea on arrival and was always cheerful and pleasant. Gwynne obviously ran the establishment and she had a set of rules which were important as the house was old, but we were not put off by her style. In fact we enjoyed her conversation and stories. The rooms were clean and tidy and we had a wonderfully restful sleep. The stairway was a piece of Georgian history and one member of our party painted the front aspect of the house from the garden for his 'Holiday Journal'. Breakfast was good, fruit compote was enjoyed as it was fresh and homemade. The 'non-fryed' fry up was perfectly good with Gwynne's own eggs from her liberated battery hens.

Wish i had seen the reviews before staying at this accommadation. As we were 5 young women staying together at our 'induction' we were questioned to our sexual orientaton, which was made quite clear that had we not only been friends we would not have been able to stay at 'her house' as she had that right for us not to be there if lesbians!! Then she also gave us the lecture on what we could do and could not do, when forced to at 4pm on the saturday to make our choice of breakfast we got reprimanded for not reading the menu properly (which was not well laid out at all), when one of us was unsure what we wanted she made it very clear that she would not tolerate this. Rodger( her poor husband) then ran round sorting our rooms as she barked orders to him, this poor man could not do anything right and was very unwelcoming atmosphere. Then she ran through the fridges where because she did not acknowledge the fact it was fresh milk we were scolded and then when two of us did not drink milk and told her, so it not be wasted they werelooked at as if we had personally attacked her nd she removed it demanding none of us give them any if they ask (they do not like it thats why they said!) We then had to get away and stayed out untill late as we felt we did not want to go back ( even my mother would not speak to me in such a way), her manner was very intimidating and could have easily ruined our weekend. The next morning as ordered we were down for breakfast for 8.30am as we dare not have been late, we ate our warm bread and scrambled egg, this was all going so well untill we asked for some tomato sauce, she then went into a big lecture on how 'this is a good establishment you know', this again made us feel awful on such a simple request so we left. On departing we were given the third degree on checking if we had left anything and not leaving the room in mess with wet towels on the bed!!!! i at times questioned who was paying who, i had initially felt this woman had felt is acceptable to be so patronising and degrading due to our age, however on reading other reviews it is clear this is her manner to everyone and sadly fear she is in the wrong the line of business as hospitality is an important part of owning a B&B!!
