“enjoy quiet Provence”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 June 2014

Staying a full day,we enjoyed the quality of the food, service, the large quiet garden with a separate swimmingpool;rooms are large, welldecorated in provencal style with all amenities(wifi disappears sometimes..)Lunch on the terrace in the shade of the gardentrees is pure heaven. As a party was going on in the garden, for dinner, hotelguest were served inside in 3 separate diningrooms:also this was flawless.
Food is the michelinstar worth.
Special mention for the exceptional friendly and professional ladiesstaff at reception, taking care of your bags and ..even car.A visit ot the abbaye next door is very interesting

We stayed at the Hostellerie for two nights and found the whole experience very relaxing, the staff were all very helpful and the food excellent.

When we arrived we were escorted onto the terrace under the trees and offered a refreshing drink prior to check in.

We had one of the garden rooms and really enjoyed that extra level of privacy.

The gardens are lovely and full of art.

The only reason I had booked this hotel was as a nice stopping point on my way to St Remy . I'd read good things about it and we decided to give it a try. I'm glad we did for a variety of reasons.

The hotel is in the tiny unremarkable village of La Celle next to a 12th century abbey which you can tour with a guide arranged by the hotel.

The first thing you experience after parking your car is the beautiful garden in an old world style but with the addition of sculptural contemporary statues and installations throughout. It's a nice counterpoint to the soft antiquity of the main restaurant building and gardens areas.

There is a small but adequate pool in a private elevated setting with good quality furnishings though no bar (there was also a note saying that only soft drinks could be served there which was odd in a hotel so good at hospitality and the on-site changing rooms looked a bit like a utilitarian garden shed). It was low season when we visited but still possible to sunbathe if you wanted to and a handful of other guests were happily doing so.

Our reception was very warm and friendly by a young lady and a young chap to carry the cases the short distance from the car park to our room. Unnecessary but a nice touch.

There was no formal check-in. We went straight to our room which was set to one side in a converted, pretty, single storey Provencal stone building of four rooms.

Our room - 'Angelique' - was delightful in a traditional Provencal style: painted walls, tiled floors, nice furnishings. It was a very spacious suite with a big bedroom housing a TV, sofa, table, desk and chair. A notable thing about our room was that it had a bed which, according to the young lady who showed us to our room, was slept in by Charles de Gaulle on his several visits to the hotel. Some people would love this fact but it made me laugh.

The bedroom leads onto a short corridor with excellent built-in wardrobes, a minibar, a toilet and then to a big bathroom. The bathroom was perfectly fine but a bit shabby around the bath (a weird draped shower curtain set-up and décor around the bath that looked very 1980s) and an above-the-bath shower which sprayed unevenly. The English would call it 'old money' style which is shorthand for a bit run-down! But it was very clean and perfectly agreeable.

The suite was light and had its own private garden within a bigger private garden with water feature, sculpture and a view of the mountains. It provided a lovely quiet, private space for a read or a drink. This would no doubt be very welcome during the high season when the hotel's Michelin starred restaurant would no doubt be packed at lunch and dinner.

The main event here is the dining and I only wished we'd been there at lunchtime as this was served on the glorious terrace. It really was beautiful and romantic.

Supper was in the main restaurant and was preceded by a personal welcome by the hotel's director which was a good touch.

Something we like very much is the fact that all of the 20 staff are from the village or from the town of Brignole which was five minutes away. This showed but in a good way, for although the service was totally professional and what you would expect from a Michelin starred restaurant, it was also friendly and pleasant and I got the feeling that two of the young serving staff were newly trained as their coyness hadn't yet faded into the slickness of the experienced professional. This made it all the nicer and very charming.

We started the meal with champagne on the terrace and some lovely amuse bouche of chickpea puree, radishes, tapenade and homemade bread sticks. Delicious food, served on beautiful crockery in a ravishing early evening setting. Heaven.

In the romantic candle-lit dining room we asked for a wine recommendation and were guided toward a sensibly priced regional white which was delicious.

Another amuse bouche arrived by the way of a single pillowy ravioli served in its own little lidded dish with a broth that provided a delicious scent as the lid was removed. A lovely sensory experience.

Our starters and main courses were also really wonderful. You could choose from a la carte or from three set menus. I ordered from the a la carte menu and my husband had a five course set menu.

There were many mouth-watering choices. I had a starter of white and green asparagus with a softly coddled egg and an amazing vinaigrette dressing (it sounds like it wouldn't work well but it was divine). We both had rabbit as the main course. My husband also had a fish course (sorry - I can't remember what it comprised) but it was also absolutely excellent. Local cheeses followed and then a lovely rhubarb pudding with shortbread and ice cream for my husband (which of course I sampled). All impeccable.

As it was still low season there were only two other tables of diners. One a young couple who were celebrating a special event. The other a family of four who were having a lovely relaxed evening - and us in the middle - having a lovely time too.

Breakfast the next morning was on the terrace. Beautifully presented and all the typical things you would expect in France. The thing which set this breakfast apart was the wonderful setting, the gorgeous presentation and the fact that so much of the produce was made on site in a simple style but by masters of their craft. Hence the fruit brioche was sensational, homemade conserves simply delicious, warm feather light just-baked baguette, fresh fruit salad and wonderful juice and coffee. Unbeatable.

On service throughout dinner and breakfast was a beautiful young female maître d'hôtel. She brought a quiet serenity to it all and provided a polished smiling service.

One false note of the stay was the very troubled night's sleep we had. This was caused by a loud electronic hum in the room (it wasn't the air conditioning as we didn't put it on) which seemed to come on during the night as it wasn't apparent when we went to bed. In the end my husband got up to see if he could find the source of it but couldn't, though thought it might be the garden irrigation system. It was disappointing and this (and the bathroom) are the only things that really makes us give a Very Good rather than an Excellent rating.

We should probably have said something about this when we checked out but we didn't have the heart to as it would have seemed like extreme churlishness - I'm the first to admit that I'm a very light sleeper and probably 95% of other guests would have slept right through it. It could also have been a one-off event.

It was a charming stay - the food and the staff ensured that.

The setting is as out of a romantic movie on lovers in the south of France. The shaded terrace in front of the beautyful medieval convent is facing the garden. Service is friendly, food is wonderful, particularly if you like a focus on the produce, rather than on disguising what it is your having.

Wow. This place was really amazing. A charming place with a great ambience and very good service from knowledgable staff. The food was of a very high standard. We all enjoyed our 3 courses. The wine list was very good too. I went for a walk after lunch and I was bowled over by the beauty of the place and it's surroundings.

Charming hotel, beautiful garden and superb dining setting in summer.
Would really recommend to visit the "Abbaye" just next door.
Swimming pool however is more a jacuzzi, so tiny.
Big disapointment is on coffee they served; it is a Lilly or Malongo, horrible taste for coffee / espresso addicts; for this category of hotel, we would expect better for breakfast.
Diner however was excellent.
Service was not consistent, depending on who was doing it, and however very slow.
Location is good, would definitely recommend the road between the 2 Ducasse's Inn.
