“great atmosphere, lovely food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 May 2014

We had a lovely evening here when we were staying in a treehouse in Chateau L'estange at Quinsac. A band was playing rather cheesy music, but as our table was right next to this, we felt fully involved, and the children loved it! The food was excellent, with particularly good deals for the children, who could have a three course meal for 12 euros, including all the puddings they fancied - every one of which was incredible! The starters were delicious too, with particularly lovely dressings, lots of great vegetarian options. The main courses were also very good, though I admit it is a blur as we had spent all day at the Dune de Pila, and were on a sand-high. Lovely place to go, we all loved it and thoroughly reccommend.

Dear EllaBerthoud

Many thanks for your nice comments following your recent meal with us.

The concept of a buffet for starters and desserts and grilled meats with homemade chips and green salad is a ‘recipe’ that pleases our guests and has become a bit of a tradition at l’Espérance.

I have passed your comments on to the team who make it all ‘happen’ on a daily basis!
We look forward to welcoming you back.

Kindest regards,

Anthony Torkington

“Since when have the French had the edge on chips?”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 April 2014

We walked to this little gem from our fabulous house in Carignac through some glorious countryside. As we walked up the hill there was a stunning view of Bordeaux to our left and Cafe de L'esperance on our right. We felt as if we were on a film set of a French art film.

Cute decor - a nice juxtaposition of the traditional French cafe inside with the quirkier modern design led 'terrace'.

Service, was, both times, a little slow. But isn't that the point of being in France? Lets just say it was very relaxed.

We snuck a look at what the locals were drinking. The wine was delicious.

Food was not Michelin star but again that's not what we were looking for. It was authentic. Delicious. Cooked with love. And much as it pains me to say, it served he best chips we've EVER had. Since when have the French had edge on chips? The only thing that made me feel slightly better was seeing how many of their cuts of steak were sourced from 'Royaume Uni'.

Atmosphere was super friendly.

We went back a second time. Not for the British steak, but for the French 'je ne sais quoi'. And the chips.

Grrrrrrrrrrr.

Many thanks for your nice comments following your recent meal with us.

I have passed on your feedback to the team – relaxed but always wanting to do their best! – and the Chef was particularly pleased about the comments on the chips!

We hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you back soon with our little ‘je ne sais quoi’ touch!!

“Thursday Lunch”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 April 2014

Visited on the basis of the fact it was supposed to be the little sister/brother of the Michelin starred St James.
We were disappointed because the food was basically meat and chips but nothing fancy on the menu. There was nothing wrong with it but it was more basic than I expected.
Having said that it was pretty full of French people; a mixture of couples, business people and perhaps one or two ladies that lunch. The interior is nice and Bouliac is pretty.
Not somewhere we would go again but maybe that is due to our expectations rather than the restaurant itself.
They had lost our internet reservation so you check if you don't get an email confirmation.

“Great fun, this brasserie will make you feel like a real local”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 April 2014

Cafe de L'Esperance is so much fun. If you go on the first day of being in Bordeaux, it will really make you feel like a local. The food is great, specialising on barbequed meat. You can serve yourself a selection of tempting desserts. This place is FUN.

“The place where I feel 'comfortable' when in Bordeaux...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 February 2014

This is a place I have loved for years. Easy access by the 'Rocade' and away from the hustle and bustle. Great food with no pretension, always… not for the snotty, not for the haughty. And I hope it stays that way but will it? Yves has retired, and will Patrick come back? Fortunately Brigitte is still holding the fort, and keeping the place honest :)
Living in the city of Angels, I often wish for tele transportation so that I could instantly enjoy and sip a local Lillet, before I devour an 'Onglet Echallotes'. I have to admit that I could easily appreciate an 'eclair au café' that seems to be regularly missing from the choice of desserts, but in a world so eager to transform, alter, and modify, the Café de l'Esperance, just like Bouillon Chartier in Paris, firmly remains one of my favorite french bistros for having resisted the winds of change.
