Chez Edell
Ranked #1 of 8 Monpazier B&B and Inns
Reviewed 23 November 2012

We stayed here for 3 nights as part of a 5 week trip around France. What a gorgeous establishment. Edell and John have created a wonderful, inviting and comfortable ambience in their 600+ year old home in the bastide of Monpazier. The room was quiet, warm and comfortable. The private bathroom was spotlessly clean and functional. Breakfasts were more than we expected and the addition of cereal was most welcome after a couple of weeks of French breakfasts. John will cook eggs to order and the range of breads, preserves and yoghurts was amazing. John was full of local knowledge for where to enjoy a scenic drive or a chateau. There's also an amazing aqueduct just outside the town which we chanced upon in our drives. It was also a nice break to be able to speak English with our hosts - we are from Australia and have only "school" French and in many of the places we had stayed up until now, French was spoken exclusively. John and Edell have a repetoire of interesting stories to tell and we enjoyed their company each morning. I would highly recommend this B & b to anyone travelling in the area.

Monpazier is the most perfectly preserved, untouristy of the bastide towns in this part of France, and this chambres d'hotes is part of the perfection. From the absolutely lovely couple who run the place to the comfortable room to the delicious breakfast accompanied by lively, intelligent conversation with owners and guests, I can't imagine a more compatible, welcoming, and pleasant hotel experience. We'll be back...

Chez Edell deserves an excellent+++ rating. We could not have asked for a better night's sleep, a more delicious breakfast and enjoyable and inspirational chats. Montpazier and Ches Edell compliment each other with their perfect setting, relaxed atmosphere and hospitality. Memories of our visit will have to last until we plan our next visit.

Could not recommend it more highly! Fabulous hosts in Edell & John, who provide a gorgeous B&B in a beautiful location. The room was beautiful and very comfortable. john proves to be a great tourist advisor with wonderful knowledge about the surrounding areas. Great value and lots of little extras. We are counting down until we can visit again.

Do not tell anyone but this is a very good bed and breakfast. The owners cannot do enough for you. We are staying for the second time. in two years this time for 12 nights. Says it all really. Lovely rooms, good breakfast, good showers and friendly owners not to mention Hector the dog.
John and Edell are also opening up a gite down the road which promises to be just as good. The town is peaceful at night which ensures a good night sleep. There are numerous restaurants in the high season and always at least two open in the low season.

Stayed with John and Edell for 2 nights in August at the beginning of our trip around France and Spain. We were welcomed by Hector the puppy and things just got better. The room was large and very tastefully decorated with a great shower.
Our hosts were very helpful as we were hoping to look at a few renovation properties while we were there. John was a weath of information and even got to show us a lovely property on the edge of the Bastide town,
Breakfast was great and nothing was too much trouble. The town itself is just delightful and was great place to relax for 2 days, enjoying the local market and restuarants. We were amazed by Johns local knowledge of the French way of life and picked up some very interesting tips.
Would recommend this B+B as great value for money and more.

Charming Bed & Breakfast in the Bastide town of Monpazier. The house is some 400 years old with antique charm and modern facilities. The town is quiet at night with no glow of city lights. Parking is free on street right in front. We stayed 3 nights in Room 3 overlooking a small pretty courtyard in early September. The floor in our room sloped but the furniture was leveled. Our room included a very comfortable double bed, plenty of storage shelves, hair dryer, and large modern bathroom with a generous shower. John and Edell are a lovely and interesting couple that we really enjoyed talking to each morning. We couldn’t have asked for better hosts. They are very worldly and although English is their primary language (New Zealand most recently) they also speak French and have embraced local culture. The location was central to everything we wanted to see from Bergerac to Sarlat. John is good with directions and more than happy to offer great advice for planning your time in the area. Breakfast was wonderful with fresh fruit, yogurt, cereals, local breads (fanstastic!), and hot items like cheese omelets (yum!). The price is hard to beat and booking via email could not have been easier. We would love to return to both Monpazier and Chez Edell in the future.

Room Tip: All rooms are probably equally quiet and comfortable. Room 3 was lovely overlooking the courtyard.
