We are just back after spending a couple of days in Connel / Argyle area and we stayed at the Falls of Lora Hotel.

The hotel itself is a lovely building even if the decor is rather 1970's kitch. With it's interesting nicnacs everywhere and roaring log fires we found it very relaxing. The staff were all very friendly and helpful.

The food was really excellent, the dinner menu had a good range of dishes and I have to say the fillet steak was expertly cooked and would actually say the best I've had anywhere. I think the only downfall in the dining area is the lack of table linen, nice crisp white tablecloths would make the world of difference. The breakfast in the morning was very nice, it's table service and there's a good choice on the breakfast menu.

We stayed in room 43 which is a nice spacious room and has a large 4 poster bed, lovely furniture and a big bathroom with a very large bath!! there's no shower in the en-suite but you do get the use of a shower room which is just next door. Room 43 is to the front of the hotel and therefore has great views of Loch Etive and the Connel Bridge.

All in all we had a lovely time here and would return but only for another short stay, a week would be too much. Besides there are too many other lovely places to see...

Room Tip: The hotel has a number of "special rooms" of which 43 is one.

Just returned from our annual visit to the Falls of Lora Hotel and was suprised to read on trip advisor the adverse comments and in particular the nasty personal attack on the hotel's owner Mrs Webster. What your correspondent described is at odds with what we have found, which is that Mrs Webster is concerned first and foremost with the comfort and well being of her guests, resident and non resident. Super hotel, super staff and a great atmosphere. We'll be back again next year.

We were staying in a B & B in Connel and this was reccommended by the owner, she said it was old fashioned but good food. The food was good and presented nicely, we did not think it was old fashioned but quaint, the staff were all reallt friendly and if in the area would go again.

The Falls of Lora is one of those homely understated Scottish hotels that provides home-from-home comfort and very good food. As a returning guest, I received a very warm welcome and on this my third visit I was not disappointed. Evening meals are served in the bistro bar and the choice and presentation are first class. This year's culinary highlights were the raspberry and the sticky toffee pudding sundaes. Mmmm. An the breakfast kippers almost melt in your mouth. I'll definitely be back next year.

If you haven't been to the Falls of Lora before then I'd recommend it if you're looking fo somewhere traditional. It's also an excellent location, just 10 minutes from Oban and handy for the Connel Bridge which gives access to Fort William. If heading south there's a pretty winding road south to KIlmore which cuts out Oban but it's not a fast road. It's also very accessible by train (2 minutes to the station) or bus.

Room Tip: Room prices vary according to type and view. If you haven't stayed before then it's worth paying more for a room at the front with a view across Loch Etive to the Morvern Hills.
