“Peaceful and relaxing stay in Buttala”
Reviewed 24 March 2014

We spent three nights here during our honeymoon. The location of Tree Tops Jungle Lodge is about half an hour's tuk tuk ride from Buttala. A stunning place where you really get to live in nature in a forest setting with views of the beautiful mountains. The tented huts were large and comfortable, very good bed and bathroom in the tented room. We were treated with thundershowers in the afternoon and it was wonderfully peaceful and relaxing to sit in front of the tented room and watch the light and clouds change over the mountains. A perfect place to relax with a book. The manager Kamal and the team took us on a tour on foot in the forest which was a real highlight. The food was fantastic; fruit and vegetables from the local area, curd from the local buffaloes. Breakfast was served outdoor overlooking the bush and included fruit, toast, fresh juice, rotti – flat bread - , omelet and of course tea. The Sri Lankan curry meals were delicious made up of perfectly cooked dishes which varied every day. The service by the local staff team is friendly and quick. The lodge hires people from the village and trains them in hospitality and English. This is an excellent, relaxing place to stay that gives back to the community. A relaxed forest paradise not to be missed. Highly recommended. Thank you. Rebecca and Nick, Canada.

So refreshing to get away from our usual luxury hotels and to experience life at a different pace. The service we received was fantastic from the initial tailoring of our individual itinerary (including local historical attractions and a full day in Yala), to the great curry food offered, to the knowledgeable and interesting guided walks around the camp.

The remote location of Tree Tops Jungle Lodge is fabulous. A little 3 rooms camp in the great outdoors. Situated in the bush and surrounded by beautiful landscape. The tented huts were simple, beautiful, really comfortable and they sit well and discrete in the jungle surroundings. Good beds. Even a bathroom inside the tented room.

All of them come from the local area and know the countryside like their back pocket. The 5 staff members were all extremely charming and likable. We felt safe in their hands. Kamal was a real star, excellent host and manager and the cooks made some of the best food we had in Sri Lanka. We went on nature walks after breakfast, afternoons enjoying the local bird and jungle life in the camp itself. Walking with the team was fascinating and we really came to appreciate the beauty of the surrounding jungle and its animal inhabitants. The team of local staff at the lodge have a fascinating and detailed knowledge of the local wildlife and were happy to take time to explain what we were hearing and seeing.

Although by no means guaranteed, if you are as lucky as we were to see the elephants at dusk it will prove to be the highlight of your holiday. Four nights was not enough. Absolutely worth every rupee. I would certainly recommend the Tree Tops eco lodge to anyone who is looking for wild nature and adventure and has concerns for responsible tourism.

Our two day stay at Tree Tops was an amazing experience. The tent was huge and very luxurious with bathroom in the tent.

The entire campsite was impeccable and set up with feeling for every details whilst keeping the natural environment in mind.

The staff was something we did not experience elsewhere in Sri Lanka. They were so kind, knowledgable about nature, food and hospitality.

The jungle walks were very nice, however do not expect a full safari. We did not see any large animals but had a great time nonetheless.

The food was amazing. So much variation, clear explanations on the products used and so much more than the standard rice and curries. Very healthy too.

Really a once in a lifetime experience fully worth every penny.

My husband and I just spent three nights of our honeymoon at Tree Tops Jungle Lodge. Although we stayed at luxury hotels for the rest of our trip to Sri Lanka... The hospitality we received at Tree Tops was far and away the best we experienced. Considering how wonderful everyone we met in Sri Lanka was, this is saying a lot!

Our two guides, Kumara and Deepal, were two of the nicest and most generous people we have ever had the joy of meeting. They did everything that they could think of to make sure that our visit was enjoyable, and our long hikes through the jungle and up mountains were so much fun because of their knowledge and wonderful conversation. We felt so close to them both by the time we left, and hope to stay in touch with them even after we've gone. I have never met such generous and genuinely kind hosts in my life.

Although the camp is very basic, it is incredibly clean - we didn't see a single bug inside our tent the entire time, and tent were spotless. The food was DELICIOUS and was served on beautiful tables under the stars, with candlelight. That being said, it is BASIC. This is camping, not "Glamping". My husband and I love to go backpacking, so it was our cup of tea, but it might not suit everyone. If you are looking for crisp white sheets, fluffy pillows, electricity and elephants everywhere you look, then this isn't for you.

My only complaint is that the website builds up the "elephant experience" too much. We never saw a single elephant while we were there, which was disappointing... until we realized that the true purpose of Tree Tops Jungle Lodge is that you are able to truly immerse yourself in the landscape and build relationships with the wonderful staff. As soon as we realized that, and forgot about the website's elephant photos, we were able to focus on the magic around us.

Room Tip: Request the tent furthest away from the lodge. This is the only tent with a window, with a view of t...

The camp site location is literary in the middle of nowhere. Tents are very comfy and all basic necessities are available. Great generous staff who will go out of their way to make your stay as pleasant as possible. It takes a 1.30 mnts drive to Yala National Park, but the ride to the park is in no way inconvenient; we saw plenty of wild elephants on the way to the camp site who were roaming around the main road.

We had a fabulous three days in the camp in January 2014. It's a beautiful location on the edge of the protected area bordering the northern fringe of Yala, but also within a few km of the local village and it's superb temple facing large paddy fields. The tents are very comfortable, even in the massive downpour we had one night, the food is excellent and all locally procured and cooked on site, and the camp manager, Kamal, is deeply informative, accommodating, and extremely helpful. Other staff are also superb. Kumara took us on a few local trips into forest monasteries and temples and showed us things no guide book mentions. The staff quietly work out what your interests are and make great suggestions about things to do. Although we were told no to expect elephants at this time of year two young elephants walked in to the camp on the last night and stayed about 15 mins, exploring the site. The camp has very good trackers, a very good cook, and is extremely well run. Our kids will never forget the camp or the people, and neither will I. It was very sad to have to leave. Thank you Lars, Kamal, Kumara and everyone for a real gem of a holiday.

We stayed 3 nights in September 2013 at this wonderful camping where we had such a great experience. The staff is just amazing. Very helpful, friendly and nothing is too much for them. Lars the owner, Kamal the manager and all the staff are true nature lovers and live the ecotourism, not just on paper but real. They explained us a lot about the nature and the region, which was very interesting. The camp has all amenities and is located in the scrub outside a wild forest and has no fence to make a barrier between the camp and the wilderness. This enabled us to see wild elephants, while sitting in front of our tent! The other day Kamal woke us up (as agreed the night before) when a group of about a dozen elephants past by. On day one we went on a hike where we could get a spectacular view. The hike was with a guide and two trackers and had to be adapted as we went along to the situations with the elephants.
On day two we took a safari into a northern block of Yala and a neighbouring national park. Here we saw crocodiles, a leopard, elephants, buffalos and many exotic birds (including the famous horn bill).Honestly there is not a single thing we could criticize (the food was also delicious and abundant) and we would come back any time!
