“Nice experience at Elephant Lane”
Reviewed 22 June 2012

I had a nice experience at Elephant Lane Last month when went to Uda Walawe with my family and friends. The variety of food they serve and the other hospitality services that they facilitate was impressive. I recommend anyone have a break at Elephant Lane to get memorable experience.

High ceiling rooms with an outdoor shower and air conditioning cost is 4,000 rupees. The owner kindly arranged for a safari to Uda Walawe for four hours in the afternoon which cost 3,000 rupees. When we arrived we had the most delicious egg sandwiches with the freshest, softest bread I have ever eaten ! Dinner was Sri Lankan curry which was very good and we enjoyed our first Sri Lankan breakfast which was great. Make sure you have a tea here too - the best in Sri Lanka! I would say that the place could do with mosquito nets - definitely take your own as we got eaten alive and in the room we stayed, the bed was so noisy that it woke you up when you rolled over in the night ! But other than that, a pleasant stay with a helpful host and good food.

My family (2 adults, 2 kids) stayed for 1 night at Elephant Lane and were not impressed. The room was drab and depressing and felt a bit like a shed. The bathroom was open roofed and we could hear anyone who talked in the restaurant kitchen- so I suppose they could hear everything we said as well. The manager tried very hard to be helpful but, as we were the only people staying in the hotel, he hovered over our table at meal times which was a bit uncomfortable. We were not offered a menu, just asked what we would like to eat. The food was delicious, but there was always far too much, which led to a lot of waste, questions from our host as to why we weren't eating all the food ("Do you want some curd?" "No thank you." "Why not?" "Um, because I am really full..."), and then a surprisingly huge restaurant bill on check-out. On the plus side, Elephant Lane is in a good location to visit Uda Walawe National Park.

We have traveled Sri Lanka for 10 days and this place is the one we found not so friendly and the manager is damaging this resort. He is not so friendly and dosen't look into the cleanliness of the rooms before the guest check in, as we found water all over the place in bathrooms and rooms are very dusty and not maintained well.

Food is below standards and we travelled all the way to some other hotel to have food.

Very expensive hotel compared to the others as they don't maintain anything upto the standards required for the cost they are charging.

I would suggest to talk to the owner about the facilities provided here before paying the big amount and getting into trouble, as the manager is good for nothing.

Room Tip: There is only two rooms available. Both are of the same standards.

We travelled all over Sri Lanka, receiving every time a warm welcome from every hotel and guesthouse we visited. Except in this place! Not to mention the low quality of the food and the insane rooms: the roof (could be made in asbestos) is open at every side and mosquitoes are free to circulate. In front of us, when leaving, the smart "manager" checked the room with an hostile look. The nearby Udawale park is really worth a visit, we suggest to try another accommodation...

Following trip advisor advices, I stayed with my friends in Elephant Lane for 2 nights.
The list of the problems:
- 1st of all really unfriendly staff (getting toilet paper, a towel, or room cleaning is a luxury)
- food is low quality but really expensive
- room quality (specially bathrooms) is quite low for the price we paid

For me this hotel is worthing 25$ by night, not 50$....
