Love by the lake!!!

Review of Roberts' Camp
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 13 Jan 2020
A simple but true beauty by Lake Baringo. An awesome campsite, well maintained and all the basic amenities are so well kept and clean. You have clean bathrooms and toilets which is superb!!!

The campsite has a cool little bar by the lake and the crowd in general is superb too.

A must visit for all camping lovers.

Robert's Camp at Lake Baringo offers a campsite for those who bring their own equipment, as well as accommodation in Bandas, Safari Tents and a three bedroom house. It is located directly at the shores of Lake Baringo and it can be reached by a 5 hour drive on good roads from Nairobi. Due to changes in the size of the lake (as also at the other lakes in the Rift Valley), the site is much smaller than it used to be some time ago, but still it has a unique charm and it is one of the nicer campsites in Kenya. It features (cold) showers for campers, clean toilets, a roofed area to be used for cooking and/or in case there is rain, access to electricity, w-lan and a bar/restaurant called "The Thirsty Goat". The staff is attentive and helpful and assists in organizing boat tours, hiking tours, tours to Pokot villages, to neighboring Lake Bogoria etc. The restaurant offers cold drinks an a decent menue that includes Pizza, Burgers, Pasta, goat curry and other dishes, including vegetarian options.
Robert's Camp is an ideal base camp for bird watchers, given that the Lake features over 450 different kinds of birds.

We (2 adults, 3 kids) stayed at Roberts Camp for a night. The Camp is basic but charming. After consultation with the staff, we were housed in the Cottage. This is a self-contained house with several bedrooms, a kitchen, a porch and a garden. The neo-colonial-style house was spacious, basic but fully equiped, and very clean. The garden was well-kept. It is a very peacefull place with a huge variety of birds. All of Roberts Camp is now very close to the lake - the rise of lake Baringo has flooded over 80% of the Camp and almost claimed the rest. Board rides on the lake can be arranged via the staff, you will be picked up from the Camp itself. Food and drink is available from 'The Thirsty Goat', the Roberts Camp restaurant. Have the goat curry if you want to get a tast of local cuisine. All in all, we had a great stay and we highly recommend Roberts Camp!

Please be aware you will be using a shower with only cold water (only cold water is connected) and the shower is outside, the toilet as well is outside. The toilet is a sawdust toilet next to a hippo/ crocodile infested swamp. So be sure to carry a flashlight(not provided)if you want to take a piss in the night.

And half of the place is literally under water. If you planning to eat over there only few items are availble that are advitised on the menu.

      Go at your own risk.

      Dear David,
Thank you for your personal feeling about Roberts Camp.
As a matter of fact you personally never booked the accommodation, but this is not the issue as we had advised your tour agent in advace of the different options of availabilities and chose Coots banda as their best budget accommodation. They (your tour agent) have never called to complain owing to the fact that all informations regarding our accommodations are with them.

We are in a conservation place at the lake shore with a well posted warning signs of the animals presence.Different guests have different feeling about the animals so one has to respect nature .
Yes more than half of the place is under water, as a management we can not prevent nature from taking it's course.
Actually we have tried to keep the place going since Roberts Camp has been a destination for both local and foreign tourists for decades now and we can not let it go without foghting to keep it alive.

Otherwise, we have coots cottage with hot and cold shower.
Baringo is also generally warm all year round.

Sorry for this and we promise to deliver the best next time .

      Regards
      James

I love Robert's Camp, we've camped there twice with our own tents and I can't wait to go back!

Great location on the lake front with visiting Hippos at night. Clean campsite and facilities, cold showers only but in the heat of Baringo you don't really need hot water! The staff are friendly but give you space to do your own thing without any hassle.
We normally self cater ourselves but get the odd meal from the restaurant, it's always yummy and plenty and they have cold beers and sodas. The water/barman/receptionist James was great last time, friendly and helpful.

Personally I would say the prices here are very fair, given the property's remote location and the distance they have to go to bring a lot of their kitchen and food supplies from, the hefty costs of running a licensed tourism business in Kenya and paying staff wages, I wouldn't complain about paying $8pp for camping and around $8pp for lunch.

We stayed in the Croot Cottages for 2 nights. The accommodation per se was ok (a bit run down but ok). The food in the thirsty goat however was of low quality and very expensive for this location.
One thing also - which they only inform you on check-out: If you pay by Card you pay a surcharge of 5 %.
Would have given 2* but due to the surcharge I had to deducted one *.
