“It was wonderful”
Reviewed 25 October 2015 for a stay in September 2015

Four of us stayed in Alfie's little house. Although we have visited Malta frequently over the last thirty years we were delighted to be staying in an authentic and traditional Maltese house in a traditional setting. Our neighbours were friendly and helpful, particularly in helping us to unlock the front door with its mysterious lock. The house is simply but adequately furnished and the modern bathroom is well appointed. Luckily we were there for the Birgu festival which was magnificent and we also had easy access to the best flea market ever. We all loved it and must thank the cheerful and assiduous Alfie for all he did for us. We are coming back.

“True Malta”
Reviewed 30 August 2015 for a stay in August 2015

Alfie's Place was terrific, walking distance to Waterfront and transport. Excellent restaurants especially Brazil Cafe and D Centre & affordable prices. Alfie was the best host we have had. Took time to show us around and help us with advice. The apartment was true to it's photos. We truly had a great and true Malta experience staying in Birgu enjoying the people, feasts and Alfie's hospitality!

“DON'T STAY HERE....”

…if you want a managed commercialised resort experience, a lift and a pool. However, if you want to have a unique, unforgettable experience in a magnificent location where the past really does integrate with the present, then look no further than ‘Alfie’s Place’. The clear, concise, yet comprehensive description of the accommodation and the additional information provided by Alfie give an insight into how passionately he feels that his apartment should fulfil all your needs. From the time of booking until the day of arrival, Alfie provides a wealth of useful information and will collect you from the airport or meet you in Birgu (a few minutes from the apartment) at a time convenient to you.

Meeting Alfie (a truly charismatic character with lively sense of humour and a unique prospective on Malta and Maltese life) is similar to meeting with a long lost relative. He greets you with a broad smile and a genuine welcome that puts you immediately at ease. His introduction to the area gives you important information on where to buy essentials, where you might consider eating, the local historic places you might wish to visit, where to find the ferry to Valetta and the local bus that will link you to all parts of the island…all this over a cold drink whilst looking out onto the main square. There is no rush, no sense that he has a timetable to keep – just the impression that he wants you to have a great experience in Malta.

Soon it is time to walk the few minutes through the narrow semi-pedestrian streets to the apartment, which is found half-way along a typical stepped street. On opening the door, the ‘WOW’ factor kicks in. The apartment has been tastefully renovated and skilfully blends the magnificent heritage with essential modern conveniences. As Alfie points out the main features of the kitchen / dining area, I found myself gazing at the traditional stone floor, beamed ceiling and the intriguing stairs winding to the first floor, wondering how many people over the hundreds of years must have climbed them. Everything you could possible need for your stay is here: fridge/freezer, microwave, cooker, utensils/cutlery, coffee machine, selection of pots/pans, fan, dehumidifier, table and chairs. There is an emergency light (in case of power failure). Alfie provides a ‘Welcome Pack’ of essentials (tea, coffee, milk, bread, cheese, ham) to get you started, in addition to a selection of guide books and documents that will help you plan your stay.

Off this area, running the length of the ground floor and separated by twin doors, is the shower room incorporating a towel storage area, toilet and washbasin at one end and at the far end, a washing machine. Individual sunken ceiling lights adequately light this area and it is impossible to miss the huge full-height shower enclosure which has been imaginatively constructed into the wall. It’s not a power-shower, but the high water pressure provides a similar experience.

On climbing the stairs to the first floor, through the sturdy child safety gate at the top, then a further two steps, brings you to a room on the right that contains twin beds with bedside tables and individual lamps. It has an arched ceiling, storage space, a fan and a small window. I think that children sleeping in this room could easily imagine that they were in a magical castle.

The main bedroom has a comfortable double bed, twin bedside tables with reading lights, large wardrobe and a chest of drawers with stereo player, selection of music CD’s and landline phone. The room is further complimented by the traditional stone flooring, high beamed ceilings, effective air-conditioning, a comfortable settee, wall mounted TV and WiFi that is strong throughout the apartment. Two steps lead to the small balcony where the air-conditioner unit sits. Standing there with a mug of coffee in the early morning, gazing down the street towards the City and watching the sunrise is an unforgettable experience. It is from here that you can hear and watch the local residents going about their daily life and stare at the buildings opposite, marvelling at the range of architectural features, wondering when and how the holes in the walls were made and why there are keys hung on string from the rooftops. The street is so narrow that it’s possible to imagine that with only slightly longer arms, you could reach out and touch someone on the opposite balcony! Street cleaning and rubbish collection is undertaken every morning, well before most people are awake, so the area is spotless for the next day.

After the guided tour of the apartment, Alfie leaves but not before making sure that you have his contact details in case of emergency – or just if you want advice or a chat. He promises to give you a call during your stay to ensure that all is as well, and he does! If you forget anything, he leaves a comprehensive list of useful information and phone numbers; Valetta Ferry, Hospital, Taxi, etc. It is only then that you fully appreciate where you will be staying for the duration of your holiday, gain a sense of the atmosphere of the past and the unique character of the accommodation.

The washing machine provided is very useful. Most do their washing in the evening and hang it out overnight on the clothesline on the balcony. By morning it will be dry and can be removed so as not to destroy the overall appearance of the enchanting street during the day.

Wandering through the narrow streets uncovers a wine bar, restaurant, shop or craft outlet in the most surprising of places. Engage with the residents and you will receive a smile and a warm greeting.

This apartment is ideal for singles, couples and families who want to be in a location that provides easy access to the whole of Malta; has a range of museums, churches and other interesting venues and provides the closest possible experience to living as part of a vibrant local community in a traditional dwelling. Don’t be put off by the relatively inexpensive cost – just be amazed at the quality, exceptional value for money, location and your Host, Alfie.

Whilst this is a review of the accommodation, it might be helpful to provide some tips to make your time in Malta more enjoyable. The fact that English is spoken and understood everywhere makes life easy. If you are lucky enough to be staying during a Fiesta, the rooftops display a range of flags and the streets are adorned with the most amazing decorations you could imagine, including banners and papier maché statues raised on wooden columns. Malta seems to be the land of fireworks and displays seem to be going off somewhere from early morning well into the evening.

When you want to explore outside the city, you can get the ferry to Valetta (15 minutes from the apartment) and providing a service every 30 minutes that is both efficient and reliable. Arriving in Valetta, take the lift (free) to the top, walk for 5 minutes and you are in the centre. Buy a weekly ticket for €10 providing unlimited travel. On your way to the ferry, allow enough time to drop into the Café Du Brazil in the square for a sumptuous breakfast served by delightful and friendly staff. Alternatively walk up the road from the apartment, turn right, then left and within 5 minutes you are at the bus terminus from where you can get the 2 or 3 bus into Valetta -a 20 minute journey. This is also where you can get the airport bus – X7, taking about 30 minutes.

Don’t buy the overpriced tour excursions. Buy an ‘Explorer Ticket’ from the bus station which will give you unlimited travel for €21. You can get to anywhere on Malta and Gozo by bus using this card. Be warned that the bus timetables are possibly put there for the amusement of tourists, as they bear no resemblance to the actual times of the bus! Your bus may leave 20 minutes early or perhaps it is 40 minutes late. That said, the service is efficient and comprehensive, but you may spend a lot of time standing on the popular services. If you don’t buy the ‘Explorer Ticket’, each journey will cost you €2 for a journey of up to 2 hours and can include changes.

A point worth noting is that both the weekly ticket on the ferry and the ‘Explorer Ticket’ are valid for 7 days and that actually means 7 consecutive 24 hour periods from first use. Therefore if you use the ticket at 2pm on a Monday, it is valid until 1.59pm the next Monday.

For an amazing and thought provoking experience, visit Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum which is an underground prehistoric burial site said to be over 5000 years old. Tickets must be booked on line and should be done well in advance of your visit.

To visit Gozo, take the bus to Cirkewwa (1½-2 hrs) from Valetta (41/42), ferry to Mgarr (20 minutes) for €4.65 return. Come out of the ferryport, turn right and board the 301 (express) or 322 (local) bus to Victoria. If you get the 322, you will be amazed at how the bus navigates the narrow back-streets which are dotted with parked cars on either side! From Victoria bus station, select your route and go!

Whilst you may wish to take a cruise to Comino (Blue Lagoon), using the bus and ferry has the advantage of getting you to the Blue Lagoon before the hundreds of tourists that will arrive during the early afternoon. From Cirkewwa, take the transfer speedboat to the Blue Lagoon and if you don’t want to be amongst the hundreds (honestly) lining the main area, walk up the hill to the left and go immediately down to the connecting bay that will be relatively free until the main tour boats arrive. To be in an even more secluded area, take the 15 minute walk to Santa Maria Bay. If you have taken the ferry/transfer, there is no need to buy a speedboat tri p to see the caves, as all the transfers take you back via the caves anyway. For the adventurous it is possible to go Malta – Gozo – Comino – Malta (or Malta – Comino – Gozo – Malta), but an early start is required.

There are so many other places to visit and sights to see, that it’s impossible to list them all here. However, for an amazing Harbour Cruise without having to be in the company of hundreds of others, hire a boat from Malta Self Drive Boats in Sliema on the sea front near the Fortina Hotel for €35 an hour, possibly cheaper if you can get a ‘Deal Today’ (Malta) voucher. No experience necessary and a truly amazing experience.

“A fantastic holiday in an authentic Maltese home”

The description and photos are extremely accurate, we got exactly what we expected and also what we wanted. The welcome pack was very much appreciated and there are lots of tourist information in the house to refer to. The only thing i would say is that whilst it does have two bedrooms the second is very small and four adults may feel very cramped.

It was lovely to live on Vittosia. The locals were very welcoming and were really accepting of us even when we went for a swim in the harbour where they all hang out.

Alfie met us at the airport and was great. He showed us around the village and even bought us a drink in the local bar. Couldnt ask for anymore.

It was that good we have already booked to stay in Alfies other house next year. Cant wait.
