From the moment we arrived, Alfie made us feel welcome and treated us like family. The service given is second to none. We met Alfie at a local bar and he assisted us to the house. He was even thoughtful enough to supply bread, milk, butter etc to help tide us over.
The house itself is in a beautiful old street and is in character with the neighbouring properties. We really only wanted accommodation to sleep and shower but we were so comfortable, we stayed in on two evenings and watched the TV with a bottle of wine and some pastizzi!
Towels, hairdryer, iron, pegs etc were on hand if needed and the price included fabulous TV package that included live TV from all over Europe. And WiFi was also included. What more could you ask for?
The house is clean and very comfortable. It is tastefully decorated and it's clear from the signs dotted here & there that Alfie also has your health & safety high on his list.
Both bedrooms were large and overlooked the street and the double bed in the main bedroom gave me many a night's decent sleep. It is so very comfortable.
At the end of our stay, Alfie helped us by taking us to the airport. I can find no fault.
We stayed for 5 nights in Alfie's place. Alfie was there to meet us at the airport took us to the apartment, and on the way he gave us a guide to the main attractions of Malta pointing out various land marks with a bit of history, and how to make the best use of busses and ferries.
He showed us around the apartment which he had stocked with bread milk and other basic essentials.
The apartment was in Birgu in the old town near the town square. Birgu is a very attractive area with lots of old buildings museums cafes bars and restaurants, all within walking distance of the apartment.
A 10 minute walk brought you to the ferry where you could be in Valetta in 10 minutes, ( recommend a weekly ferry pass for 10 euros). The bus to Valetta was in the square a couple of minutes away.
The apartment was well stocked and comfortable and secure, bearing in mind it is a very old building.
We had a wonderful time and Alfie went out of his way to help us get to the airport.
We would highly recommend Alfie's place.
Excellent experience during our (wife and I) first visit to Malta. Great communication with Alfie during the booking process, take him up on his offer to pick you up and drop you off at the airport for a nominal fee - he meets you at the airport arrival lobby with your name on a sign.
This area of Birgu/Vittoriosa is pedestrian-friendly, and having a rental car would be more trouble than it's worth. Several good restaurants nearby for breakfast (we went to Cafe du Brazil and Il-Girbi) and dinner (our particular favorite is Osteria Ve). There are a couple of convenience stores in Victory Square (5-minute walk), where the Birgu Centre bus stop (Route #2) is also located.
10- to 15-minute walk down to the Birgu-Valletta ferry or (our preference) take one of the "dghajsa" water taxis (both are in the Grand Harbour Marina/Dockyard Creek) when you go across to Valletta.
The pictures of the property are accurate - 500-year-old two-story building with updated interior. Kitchen/dining area, coin-fed electric meter, toilet, shower, and washing machine on the first floor, then a stone stairway to the two bedrooms upstairs. Ductless air conditioner in the main bedroom, electric fans in the smaller one. No clothes dryer, but there is a drying rack on the small balcony outside the main bedroom.
The entire area was very safe - quiet streets, friendly neighbors (the few times we saw them), and well-lit. Lots of walking, though, and in July/August, don't forget your hats, sunscreen and water bottle!
We highly recommend Alfie's and would stay here again.
if you want to soak up the history of Malta and meet the locals this is the place to be.Excellent and inexpensive bus and ferris service. We had a great holiday made even more enjoyable by our host,Alfie he was kind helpful and informative.he kept us constantly informed of events places of interest and good eating venues. We would certainly like to return to Malta and it would have to be with Alfie Thanks for a great time!
Thanks Alfred, for opening up your child-home to us tourists - it has been the perfect Atmospheric, Local & Historic Accomodation Apartment - that we thought we only could dream of staying in.
Overall: Perfect, can 100% recommend Alfie's place and Alfred as a host.
Advice to future guests :
-Transport "to/from airport": Alfie's offer to transport from-to Airport is a fantastic way to start and end the holidays.
-Transport "in Malta": We "fell in-love" with bus number-2 - starting and ending at the Birgu-Centre (200m from the apartment) - and going to the (obligatoric) Valletta-Bus-Terminal (where nearly all busses in Malta "start-out"). The Ferry "3-Ferries" from-Birgu/Cospicua-to-Valetta is also available (PS: The Sliema-Valletta ferry doesn't share ticket-system with the Birgu/C.-Valletta ferry). Busses were often "full" in the middle of a bus-route. The Tallinja-app is good for seeing "next bus" (the "Planning-route" function didn't work (sept'2017)).
-Car-Rent & Driving: Is for the "hard-core" (because of narrow roads, limited parking-space, left-lane-english-driving, expenses, etc.).
-Groceries: Local small shops has +++ atmosphere, Super-Markets can be found in Sliema etc.
-The sorroundings++: Historic+++, and Alive (with Locals living, working, chatting & sitting outside). It all makes this place a paradise for the active & open-minded tourist, who doesn't mind the on-your-own challenge.
-Surprices++: Help can be found everywhere - asking the locals. Local free museums (we found 2: "Marianna" & "Birgu-Historic").
-Apartment++: Besides being historic++, it was fitted with everything we needed - incl. washing machine, electric-owen, microwave-owen, 220V-UK/EU-converters, and ventilators. Plus Alfreds friendly help and guidance.
-Ship-Cruises +/- (Round Malta, etc.): We chose the cheap all-in-one Captain-Morgan (over-filled, quite big ship, standing in line, and very basic). We will recommend either taking a stroll around the Sliema-Tourist-Coastline (to view and ask/negotiate yourself) - or choosing the Hornblower (booking can typically be done online). We came to the boat ourselves with bus (+/- compared to paying for the "pickup-service").
-Beaches+/-: Beaches (apart from Mellieha sand-beach) consist of (slippery) Rocks - which can be a challenge. We recommend bringing bathing shoes and wound-plasters. Melliaha beach/bay was a real ++tourist-Italian-Riviera beach. There are less seaked rocky places - and beach-app's to help.
Birgu is the older of the "three cities" with lots to see and do on this peninsula, including; Malta at War, Maritime Museum and also St Angelo's fort. There is a regular ferry and bus (2) to Valletta.
Alfie is the perfect host, very accommodating, engaging and excellent communications. He also kindly picked us up and dropped us off at the airport.
The accommodation itself is 500 years old and comprises a kitchen/ diner and toilet/ shower room downstairs (where the washing machine is located) and two bedrooms upstairs. The larger of the two rooms is very comfortable and includes air conditioning. The smaller bedroom does not have AC but there is a fan and comprises two single beds.
Set in a quiet lane the only noise is from neighbours who might be chatting.
Lose yourself in Birgu walking through the lanes and finding new views across the harbour.
We had an amazing week in beautiful Malta . Our hostess , Alfie , contribute highly to that , Alfies apartment is highly recommended for those want to have a unique experience leaving in the heart of historical city of Birgu .
