First of all , I have to say that the picture shown is not the place we stayed in. Alfie has two places in Malta and we were in the other one. I am sure the one pictured is very nice but Tripadvisor has got the rentals confused!
Right from the start Alfie could not have been more helpful . We had said we were interested in walking so he emailed us lots of detailed info about walking routes. We had a late arrival so Alfie picked us up from the airport and went out of his way to do detours to show us where we could get the buses and the ferry to Valletta and he told us how to get the best deals on travel tickets. He also showed us round the town square and told us the best places to go for supplies.
The next morning, following Alfie’s advice , we felt very confident about travelling around and , over our 10 day visit, we used the buses and ferries every day.
The Alley was a very comfortable place to stay. It was a quirky and very traditional Maltese house with beautiful arched ceilings. The WiFi was very great and being able to get tv in lots of different languages was a real bonus. We loved the roof terrace and although it was shaded by the time we got back late afternoon, it was great for us Scots to be able to sit outside with t shirts on , in the shade , in November and not be freezing!!
We used lots of local shops and restaurants and had a very friendly experience in them all.
Having visited lots of places over our 10 days, we were very happy that we had chosen to stay in Birgu. It is a beautiful area, very traditional , peaceful and within easy transport reach of anywhere you want to go in Malta.
We will definitely stay in The Alley again if we return to Malta.
Just spent a month at the Alley, what a house, full of character and a brilliant position in the centre of Birgu. If you want a proper Maltese experience this is the place. The owner Alfie is a great bloke, nothing is to much trouble and any problems he is there straight away. Access into Valletta is so easy and cheap, (if you are a senior 90 cents return,) using the ferry which is only a few minutes walk away.
Alfie thank you so much the location was wonderful the property lovely public transport and ferry all with in easy reach we are looking at dates to book again as there was so much to see in Malta
Literally everything you could possibly need from a holiday rental, All the homely essentials you might possibly need , right down to an umbrella (in case it rains).
Close to fantastic bars and restaurants, quiet street.
Alfred collected us from the airport, gave us a brief tour of area, went for a drink and explained the house thoroughly, everything is also written down as well.
Swimming over the bridge by Fort St Angelo is excellent and quiet, just go careful getting in and out of the slipway. ( avoid black bits!)
For anyone fussy , please remember that the walls are natural and inclined to dust...
Wonderful holiday, thanks to Alfred.
We stayed at Alfie's Place @The Alley with friends for a week from 12th June. We visit Malta every year as we have family there but this time friends asked us to go with them. We knew Birgu would be a good location and we booked Alfie's Place @ The Alley after reading the great reviews on Trip Advisor and were not disappointed. The house is a traditional old Maltese house and just beautiful. It had everything we needed for a stay there although we only ate breakfast there! There was plenty of space for the four of us and the extra toilet was a bonus! Alfie was the perfect host and such a lovely guy. He kept in touch with us before we arrived and whilst we were there. He picked us up from the Airport and took us back and even took us for a drink in a local bar before taking us to the house which was a lovely gesture. Birgu is a fantastic location with plenty of lovely restaurants and bars on the waterfront and in Birgu itself. We enjoyed some fabulous meals all very reasonably priced. The house is only a short walk from the centre and waterfront also the ferry over to Valletta which runs until midnight. We also hired a car for a few days and had no problem parking after obtaining a parking permit from the local council. All in all we had a fabulous week and would not hesitate to recommend Alfie's Place at The Alley. Thank you Alfie we would love to come back
This little house was superb as was the owner Alfred who was always on hand if we needed him. After being out all day in the sun it was a pleasure to open the door and walk into the peace of the cool living room. The kitchen was very well kitted out with everything you needed to cook an evening meal - however we ate out in the superb local restaurants. The location of the property in Birgu is in a pretty alley just a 2 minute walk from the square and bus stop and 10 minutes from the ferry. The harbour area is beautiful with stunning views. If you are looking for a 'local' experience with very friendly Maltese people this is definitely the place to be. Thank you Alfred
We have just spent two weeks at 'Alfie's Place @ The Alley and thoroughly enjoyed it. The house is ideal; very traditional but with all necessary 'mod cons', perfect for relaxing, cooking or just as a base. A nice location, very close to Birgu Square which, whilst also very traditional with its small bars, shops and restaurants, is aqlso very close to the waterfront with its new restaurants overlooking the harbour, giving the best of both worlds. Alfie is a great host, very much a local character, cheerful and at all times helpful. The location has great access to Valetta via the ferry and the lift (less than 30 minutes from front door to the top of the lift at Valletta) plus being a good starting point for walks around the Three Cities. Much history and many places of interest with easy walking distance. We WILL return!
