We again misjudged our distance and ended up out in the middle of nowhere in the dark and with no hotel. We drove in the dark for what seemed like hours and we were hungry and exhausted with no prospects for hotels. We happened upon this hotel and it was just perfect. Little cabins with cute gardens and very large. The bathroom was surprisingly modern and there was a refrigerator. You could order room service from the restaurant on property and we did that for breakfast. They even offered to keep the kitchen open for us when we checked in so late to make us food. Very kind and gracious hosts. Each cabin is named after a bird and they plant the proper plants outside to attract that kind of bird!! In the light of morning we could see that the town of Takaka was only a few minutes away but we had come in from the other side so it was like finding an oasis.

Amazing grounds, peaceful and revitilising atmosphere. The owners are perfect hosts to a perfect place and most helpful when our car broke down. The food is to die for and the rooms pristine.

This place provides the best get away experience for those seeking to get away from the busy life. would recommend to all and will be returning myself some day. can't wait!!!

We traveled to New Zealand to perform 11 concerts along side The Black Seeds. After 4 shows on the South Island, we had 3 days off before catching a ferry to Wellington.
The amazing people at Eatery on The Rock gave us a great deal to rent out all 5 of their rooms. It was the first time the band had ever spent two nights together, just relaxing and talking about the next record. Our stay at Eatery On The Rock was a turning point on the tour. The mixture of beauty, relaxation, and wonderful hospitality brought us closer together and set the stage for one of the best tours that the band has ever had.
No Joke. This places ROCKS!

Just perfect. Lovely clean rooms set in a private garden setting. Wonderful hostess made us very welcome. Restaurant meal was one of the best we have had in our 10yrs in New Zealand!! A superb place to stay & dine. We owned a large motel for 6 years so we know how much work goes into making a place perfect & this place is highly recommended & we will be staying again.

After spending four wonderful days at Eatery on the Rock we were sad to leave. The accommodation, the restaurant, the pleasant owners and staff, the Californian quail and the other birds flitting round the karst formations all make for an idyllic stay.

This was our third visit to the 'Eatery' , and each time we seem to enjoy staying and travelling around Golden Bay more than the last. All things considered, it is our favourite stop in New Zealand and we look forward to staying again.

i was on tour with my band in New Zealand. After the first string of 5 shows in the South island,we were told we had to check Takaka. So we ended up spending 2 days off at the Eatery on the Rock. The rooms were all cabins..very clean.the setting is amazing.quiet, beautiful bird sounds..a quick walk into town and close to able tasman park, which has some of the purest, most beautiful water in the world.Pat,one of the owners, was helpful and very kind, putting up with an American band taking over her place for 2 days.I really hope to get back there..

Decided to spend a few days in Golden Bay for my 50th

The local tourist information office recommended the Eatery on the Rock as a suitable stay. Initially we booked 1 night, stayed for 2 and could have stayed forever.

- First class boutique accommodation, based on detached chalets with a private garden set amongst natural Karst Rock formations. Fantastically private, extremely comfy with a great ambiance.

- A great restaurant, not too pricey - ala cart, the owner does the cooking and he has over 30 years experience, he enjoys his art and was a great host. There was a good selection of wines and even a spare pair of reading glasses to help me read the menu.

Personally, I could not fault it in anyway, and I am known to be choosey. If we get the chance to go back we certainly will.
