Shady Rest
Ranked #2 of 10 Takaka B&B and Inns
Reviewed 15 January 2013

We arrived to Takaka quite late (around 9pm), without hotel reservation. We entered the Shady Rest and Mark showed us the room. At first, we thought the room was the entire hotel: A large lounge with a fireplace, a couch, and a small desk. We stayed and had one of the best NZ hotel experiences in our journey.

Pros:
* Fantastic rooms. Huge, with fireplace and enormous double bed
* Free internet
* Friendly and helpful service from Mark
* Accepts credit card (not obvious in remote places)
* Rich breakfast - Bread, cereals, fresh fruit, jam, juice yogurt and toasts

Cons:
None that I can think of.

Room Tip: We really enjoyed the room at the first floor on the left.

We arrived at Shady Rest to be greeted by Mark the owner. What a smashing guy he is. Wonderful communication which he outs to great use with his guests. Having driven from Nelson over Takaka Hill I was knackered and ready for a drink. Mark's sixth sense had two coffees on the table before I could even ask. He then proceeded to give us a very interesting revalation of the history of Shady Rest and the two Doctors who first had it. He then produced a map of the area which was far better than the one the Information people gave out. He then marked off all the places of interest to visit. What a good decision to take him at his word. We saw some wonderful sights in the area. In the morning Mark provided a reasonable breakfast as a continental breakfast. It consisted of fresh fruit salad prepared fresh daily and very nice, cereal and toast, butter and jam/marmalade. A bit staid I would say. The rooms was large and led directly on to the garden area. Unfortuneately it was always in the shade and was quite cold. Surprising as in the sun it was in the mid 70s. The ensuite was superb and had a lovely spa bath. Unfortuneately due to time constraints could not get the time to use it having to make do with the very good shower in the bath. Unfortuneately Mark was let down by his domestic staff who serviced the room. The waste bin was not emptied in 3 days, towels were never folded and replaced and beds were never made. Maybe I was partly at fault by not raising the matter with Mark on our return on the first full day. We are on a full tour of New Zealand and of all the B&Bs we have or will stay at Shady Rest is the most expensive. It would have been even more expensive if we had elected to have a cooked breakfast. All in all an excellent proprietor but Not an excellent B&B.

Glad to hear that you found my advice helpful. Confused about the comments regarding room servicing! My prices reflect the level of comfort, space and luxury provided. Overall I hope you enjoyed your stay as much as I did. Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback.

We had a huge room, a huge bed, and a sofa, so it was a very relaxed stay. High ceilings, rimu panelled walls and a moulded plaster ceiling complete the turn of the 19th to early 20th century decor. The breakfast was exactly what we wanted, with fresh fruit. Golden Bay is a place to spend at least a week - we should know as we used to live there.

Room Tip: In hot weather choose the street facing room.

The welcome you receive when arriving at the old doctors residence in Takaka is amazing. Mark the host makes you feel right at home and the house and rooms do not disappoint! We spent one night here with my wife my parents and my in laws. It was perfect and beautifully kept, Marks breakfast is just the way to start the day!

We weren't quite sure where to stay in Takaka, but plumped for a Trip Advisor-approved place (as is often the case), and were far from disappointed. Some nice little touches here that we really appreciated. Comfort-plus. If we're ever lucky enough to pass through the area again, the Shady Rest willbe a no-brainer for us.

Dont pass through Takaka wondering where to stay without checking this place out. We stopped for a nosey and didn't want to leave two nights later. Mark has worked wonders on this old property which is a pure delight. Make sure to ask about the history of the carpets/curtains. Surprise guaranteed. Marks breakfasts and company are great.

This is an excellent and very reasonable place to stay given all that you get. The B&B is located near many great trails and stores, the village has wonderful cafes and heathy food within walking distance and the place is designed with loving detail. I have travelled to any destinations and have stayed in more hotels than I can count - The generous and warm service by Mark and hs staff is exceptional - I have never been so well looked after and would highly recommend this place foe short and long stays. I stayed one night and actually came back for more!
