If you're going to stay in Golden Bay, this is the only choice. We had the honeymoon cottage, which is the best of them -- a bit more private and secluded with its own "front yard" and wonderful lounge chairs to hang out in and watch the water. The breakfasts (delivered the afternoon prior) are plentiful and the rooms were always well cleaned and made up. Guest laundry facilities were particularly welcomed and a nice surprise. Wifi was a bit cantankerous, but not a big deal as we were there primarily to relax. Be prepared for the fact that Golden Bay is sparsely populated and all dining options (with the exception of the nearest place, Mussel Inn) require a 15+ drive. Adrift cottages have their own kitchens so preparing your own dinner at least one night was something we enjoyed.

Room Tip: Spring for the Honeymoon Cottage -- I would not recommend the two cottages in the back without direc...

Thank you very much for your feedback. Glad you enjoyed our Honeymoon Cottage. We have installed a new Wi-Fi system since your stay which even reaches to parts of the beach! Our previous system struggled, particularly connecting with smart phones. We have just now been able to get rural broadband (ADSL), so we no longer need to limit data use and it also makes the system much easier for guests to use.

This was my second visit to Adrift. The standard of the cottages is vey high and they are extremely clean. Even though the cottages were full you would not know you had neighbours. A lovely sound waking up to the waves on the beach. The breakfast is presented lovely.

Adrift
Paradise found
We needed some respite time on our tour and Paul Carberry of New Zealand in Depth said 4 nights at Adrift in Golden Bay was the ideal tonic and base to recharge batteries, he was of course correct yet again. Bess & Gordon were superb helpful hosts, the studio was very comfortable, the position on the lawn with the palm trees, waves lapping and sunrises to die for are exactly as everyone on tripadviser said they would be and more. The one bed units are better if you want to self-cater but otherwise with the breakfast provisions Bess provides and the suggested restaurants to eat out at you can’t go wrong with the studio and put the money you save to the restaurant meals they suggest, batteries recharged let’s get on with the sights and the views around every corner!

We stayed for 5 nights in the Honeymoon Cottage and loved it! Our hosts and their family were welcoming and very helpful when we needed it, keeping discretely out of our way most of the time. Our breakfast basket was quietly delivered each day with fresh fruit, often from the garden, yoghurt, juice, bread and eggs, bacon, mushrooms and tomatoes if we felt like cooking. We could wander over the lawn to the beach for a swim before breakfast on our private terrace, sit and read, or take a trip to the charming town of Takaka for lunch. The Mussel Inn is great too for proper beer and a very nice fish burger and the little coffee shop at the end of the drive does great coffee and delicious brownies, as well as selling fruits like blueberries and cherries in season. Would thoroughly recommend Adrift!

So pleased that you enjoyed your time at Adrift and thank you for taking the time to review and recommend us.
Great that you enjoyed our local venues, our “in-house” produce and that of our locality. I am sure others will find your recommendations very helpful.

We stayed in the studio apartment in January 2014. The location is pristine and the owners are wonderful. Gordon was very nice and helpful. They provided us with a barbeque and a kayak during our stay. For breakfast, we got muesli, fruits, bread, milk, juice and preserves. We wished we got a little change in the breakfast in those 4 days.
The view from our room was beautiful with a well manicured garden and the sea.
We did however think that the studio room is slightly small.

Thank you very much for your feedback. We're pleased that you found our location and view from the Studio impressive and that we were able to help you enjoy your visit to Golden Bay. Of the six accommodation options that we offer, The Studio's main attribute is its proximity to the beach, however it is our smallest room, with 25 square metres of indoor space and a 16 square metre outdoor deck overlooking the beach. Our five Cottages have a larger indoor floor area (45 square metres), a 20 square metre outdoor deck which overlooks the beach as well as an enclosed courtyard (37 square metres) at the rear.

Our second visit to Adrift, staying in the Studio, did not disappoint. We received another lovely warm welcome and the room and the view were just as gorgeous as we had remembered. An excellent continental breakfast hamper set us up beautifully for the day. Adrift provides peace and tranquillity with perfect, yet discreet service. Its a little spot of heaven and worth every penny and the drive over Takaka Hill!!

Take a deep breath. Now let it out slowly... You have arrived. A handful of beautiful, well built private cottages with folding glass "walls" that open to the ocean to let any stress wash away. Beds, kitchen- all beautifully appointed. Fill out a breakfast card (fresh eggs & bacon or fruit & muesli) and it will be quietly delivered in the morning. Plan to stay- sit on your veranda with a book, watercolors, that letter, poetry, journal or book you've been planning to write- and let your heart and mind wander. From there you can explore Farewell Spit, The Mussel Inn has the best music, brew & local scene (Catch the Gypsy Pickers/ Valentes if you can), and the Takaka arts shops and distillery (Schnappdragon) are not to be missed. Blue penguins are sometimes hiding around there too. The owners are lovely- kind and happy to chat. My only hesitation on giving it the most stellar review possible is that I don't want it to be booked out the next time I am in Golden Bay.

Room Tip: You really can't go wrong. Every cottage has a lovely view.
