“Reality exceeded impression”
Reviewed 28 August 2014

The website left a great impression of this wonderful place. The hosts were friendly and welcoming. We loved to learn about the little blue penguins and to see the nest. Was such a treat to watch the dolphins swimming in the bay whilst we drank our early morning cuppa in bed. Breakfast arrangements suited us well. Sooo much food! Thank you for a wonderful stay. We look forward to our next visit in November.

Room Tip: We stayed in sea front cottage - was lovely. Could hear the penguins chattering on their return to...

Thanks for taking the time to write a review and glad you found that Adrift exceeded your expectations. Great that the local wildlife cooperated so you could see and hear them!

Our schedule saw us fly in from Dunedin, via Christchurch to Nelson late afternoon, pick up a hire car and drive over Takaka Hill to Golden Bay. It’s quite a drive. By the time we reached Takaka (the town) we needed to stop for a meal break and then, with darkness falling, completed the last leg of our journey to Tukurua. We contacted Gordon from the reception cabin and he emerged from his house to help with our luggage and showed us to our Beachfront Cottage.

The cottage was very spacious - an open plan living room/kitchen, with separate bathroom and bedroom.

The kitchen was well equipped to cover self-catering needs and non-perishable breakfast items were delivered in a basket as pre-ordered with other goods stored in the fridge for use the following day. We had the cooked version (i.e. we cooked it) of bacon, mushrooms, eggs, tomato together with homemade muesli and toast and a continental breakfast (including lots of fruit) on day two, both of which contained good quality items. This breakfast style complements the idea of just chilling - have breakfast when you want and relax in your own company. There’s no washing machine or tumble dryer in the cottage however guests are permitted to use the onsite laundry at certain times. In practice we were able to use it a little outside these to better match our requirements.

The living area had a table and two chairs for dining, a comfy settee and armchair and coffee table. The television was restricted to very few channels with poor reception but a DVD player was provided and Gordon has a large selection of films to borrow - just make your choice for evening viewing and sit back with a bottle of wine. A patio door leads onto the decking with a view over the lawn to the Bay - and table and chairs to sit and enjoy it. There is a path down to the beach from the garden. Our access was a bit hindered by lots of driftwood but on our return from the beach we wandered up another path which brought us past one of the neighbouring cottages. Despite the relative proximity of the other four cottages it still felt perfectly secluded and the beach was almost deserted for miles in either direction. Sadly during our stay the weather wasn’t ideal for sitting out sunbathing but in any case we were exploring the area so this wasn’t an issue. A kayak is available for use on request.

The bedroom had a comfortable double bed with duvet and electric blanket if required. There’s no wardrobe - a fixed open rail is attached to the wall with clothes hangers instead and a shelf below the window is handy for storing bags. Bathrobes are provided. The window overlooks the lawn and Bay and it all provides a relaxing setting for a good nights sleep.

The bathroom was very spacious with a double spa bath with a shower over it. Unfortunately some of the jets weren’t working particularly well but there was good water pressure to fill the tub and for showering. The underfloor heating was nice to take the chill off the floor tiles. Plenty of towels were available and a heated towel rail if you wanted to recycle them (although fresh towels were available too).

So there you have it. As cottages go it’s very spacious, well equipped, comfortable and located in a fantastic setting however I must admit that I had different expectations as to what would constitute “luxury” accommodation.

Gordon is a fantastic host - a friendlier and more easy going person would be hard to find - it must be his original Bolton background and many years in this lovely setting which make him so easy to talk to.

If you’re looking for somewhere on the beach to get away from it all this might well fit the bill. Talking of which, our stay was $340 (£175) per night with one night paid in advance. It was one of the more expensive places we stayed during this visit to NZ however we would happily stay again if/when visiting this area. We recommend a visit to nearby Wainui Falls for an adventurous trail in our experience.

Room Tip: All seem to have a similar outlook to the Bay

Thank you for taking the time to write such an extensive review. Glad that you enjoyed the relaxed style and the quality of our breakfast set up. We're sorry about the limited TV channels; we have since updated our system to give better quality viewing and now have 12 channels to choose from. Thank you for the feedback about some of the jets not working in the spa bath. They can actually be turned on and off manually by turning the individual jet – however, this is not very obvious, so we will ensure that housekeeping check that all the jets are turned on when the spas are flushed with sterilizing solution between each checkout.
We really appreciate your comments and the opportunity it gives us to make improvements. We look forward to seeing you again if you're back in Golden Bay!

Glorious drive to get to Adrift, and we felt instantly like we were in paradise as we came up the long drive way. We received a warm and unhurried welcome from Gordon, were helped with our luggage and shown to our cottage. Oh what a fantastic view from the rooms. The kitchen was very well equipped and had everything we needed. The bathroom with underfloor heating was wonderful. The bedroom was cosy with a fabulous view, and the lounge room was very relaxing, and this lead out to the deck with tables and chairs, and a lawn with steps to the beach. The breakfast provisions were fresh, tasty and plentiful. The environment was sheer indulgence. There was even a barbecue out near the kitchen which we didn't get to use. Our four nights here were bliss. Plenty to do in the area, from walking to devouring the various artists' workshops and galleries. Would return tomorrow for another stay! Recommend it highly.

You need to stay here. The cottages provide fantastic luxuries, unparalleled views, delicious breakfasts, and an ideal private setting. They are also perfectly located to explore the stunning landscape that surrounds the Golden Bay and Abel Tasman areas. Would highly recommend this.

We had a really lovely time here - a proper honeymoon type experience. Relaxed, unhurried, but with all the right touches. Despite having to ford floods to get to Adrift (unusually fierce cyclone!) the sun came out and we were able to completely relax in this wonderful place. We loved how easy it was to get to the beautiful beach, the landscaping of the grounds, the attention it detail, and the hospitality of Gordon and Bess. It was a very special stay but the modesty of their approach suited us perfectly.

Room Tip: Honeymoon cottage is really worth it if you want a little extra privacy.

We're so pleased that you enjoyed the beginning of your honeymoon with us after having to endure the delay caused by the tail end of the cyclone that affected New Zealand. It was a delight chatting with you both and thanks for taking the time to write your review and all the best for your new life together!

If you're going to stay in Golden Bay, this is the only choice. We had the honeymoon cottage, which is the best of them -- a bit more private and secluded with its own "front yard" and wonderful lounge chairs to hang out in and watch the water. The breakfasts (delivered the afternoon prior) are plentiful and the rooms were always well cleaned and made up. Guest laundry facilities were particularly welcomed and a nice surprise. Wifi was a bit cantankerous, but not a big deal as we were there primarily to relax. Be prepared for the fact that Golden Bay is sparsely populated and all dining options (with the exception of the nearest place, Mussel Inn) require a 15+ drive. Adrift cottages have their own kitchens so preparing your own dinner at least one night was something we enjoyed.

Room Tip: Spring for the Honeymoon Cottage -- I would not recommend the two cottages in the back without direc...

Thank you very much for your feedback. Glad you enjoyed our Honeymoon Cottage. We have installed a new Wi-Fi system since your stay which even reaches to parts of the beach! Our previous system struggled, particularly connecting with smart phones. We have just now been able to get rural broadband (ADSL), so we no longer need to limit data use and it also makes the system much easier for guests to use.
