“The Memory Lingers On”
Reviewed 30 December 2013

In our case, the song is long ended, but the memory truly does linger on.We stayed here in May;one of two stops driving from the U.K.to the Costa Blanca.Having booked bed & breakfast at an almost too cheap price via Booking.com,our expectations were not stratospheric and from the outside the place looks reasonable.
On entry to the building however,we were transported to a little fairy kingdom, with mental pictures so vivid, that here I am 7 months later committing my thoughts to print.
Amazing theatre like reception with as helpful a gentleman manning it as you could ever wish for and on to a friendly and atmospheric bar and a well earned drink after driving through abysmal conditions from Poitiers.
The room was spacious and characterful, with the rooms on all floors set around delightfully
differently decorated rectangular walkways overlooking the courtyard/reception below.
The museum below was a surprise and a delight and unlike some reviewers, when it came to meal time, our food was first class and accompanied by a superb, well priced wine selection.
Breakfast was outstanding with a huge choice and a cake selection to die for.
Minor gripes were that new pillows were definitely required and getting a parking space is a bit in the lap of the Gods.
Great staff, great place and if we drive to Spain again,100% definitely on our route.

We stayed for two nights at this hotel and we will be talking about the experience for a longtime to come. We didnt pick up from the website that that this is not just a hotel but a piece of history encompassing a museum. It is the first hotel that i have stayed in where the reception area is a cobbled street and the rooms suround a cenrtral courtyard that, I assume, was originally open to the sky. Our room was fine for a couple of nights, beds comfortable and clean, plenty of hot water, and toiletries included packets of toothbrushes and a desposable razor - a nice touch.

Dont be fooled by the publicity photographs!! the building onthe right hand side shown on the website (and on tripadvisor) DOES NOT EXIST!! this area is an empty space where a building once stood, and is used as a muddy carpark for visitors to the hotel. I wouldnt put us off going back, but we did have a moment where we were not sure if the ground was firm enough to take the weight of the motorbikes and that could have given us a problem.

Certainly worth staying at if you are passing through the area, but we werent very keen on Calatayud town itself. Much more expensive than the smaller towns and villages, and a less friendly feeling

First of all, I want to make clear the service was very professional at all times, both at the reception of the hotel and the restaurant. It would not be fair not mentioning this before going into the more than disappointing menu we were served as part of an offer that included room, dinner and entrance fee for el Monasterio de Piedra.
According to the restaurant, the offer included a tasting menu of four dishes of higher cathegory than the standard menu of 20 euros. The result: I could not stop looking at the rest of the tables to compare our dishes with theirs, completely astonished. Food was so poor, there was not even one dish you could consider acceptable.
I ended up sick at my room wondering how it is possible the restaurant is still a reference in Calatayud.

Room Tip: The hotel is a XVI century building you have to visit if you are in Calatayud. It brings Lope de Veg...

Incredibly old building with internal courtyard. We had a very nice room, en-suite, very clean. The window overlooked the internal courtyard. This proved a problem regarding sound travel. Understandable during the day, but not so at night. It would have been a lot quieter had the hotel night clerk not received, what sounded like, a succession of friends and family visitors throughout the night keeping me awake!

Room Tip: Do not accept a room overlooking the internal courtyard.

We didn't like Calatayud at all but we were impressed by this cute quaint hotel which has blue walls and decent food, which we dropped by during our trip to Catalunya's southern towns. The restaurant had people dressing up in 18th Century costumes so it was very atmospheric. Menu might not offer much but it's a good bet in a town with not much else to offer. Plus it has a big parking lot in front too.

We took two rooms for one night to break our drive from Andalucia back up to our home in France. We booked in advance and paid about 90 euros in total, with breakfast for three. Given the outstanding quality of the hotel, this is fantastic value! The 17th century (I'm guessing.....but it's very old) building has been beautifully and tastefully restored. The rooms are all individually decorated and the bar, restaurant and reception/courtyard areas have been maintained very much in the style of the period. The staff are friendly and courteous. We already knew the town of Calatayud from a previous vacation to the Aragon region and we highly recommend a visit. It is full of charm and history and is great value for money. The main street is full of authentic tapas bars where it is easy to while away a relaxing evening or two. The surrounding region is not generally known by tourists other than the Spaniards themselves, but it is truly magnificent.
