Les Chalets du Kandahar
Reviewed 1 April 2014

Having had a break from skiing for ten years and with two children in tow, we decided to book a catered chalet as our accommodation option. We researched the resort of La Rosiére and took advice that it was a small resort with a very good ski area for beginners and intermediates, but you could access the ski area of San Bernardo if you were more experienced and wanted black runs. Booked through Crystal for a week in the last week of March. Booked ski equipment hire separately by researching the different suppliers in the resort online (Sport 2000 came out best value by a mile). Booked the children's ski lessons direct with Evolution2 ski school (same price if booked through Crystal). Ski passes we bought through Crystal on the coach from Chamberry Airport (same price as direct with La Rosière ski pass website). One tip, if you are booking children into beginner ski lessons they won't need a ski pass until mid-way through the week (the ski school will let you know the day before so that you can arrange ski passes in the office at the bottom of the ski lift in La Rosière or Les Euscherts). Might save you a few quid.

Chalet Kitz is located up the hill in the village of Les Euscherts. It's part of several chalets hosted by Crystal and the staff seem to work as a team sharing equipment, skills and facilities. Our Host was Sylvan and he was excellent. We had a warm welcome, fresh cake and refreshments and were shown our rooms. These were typically decorated with an alpine theme and were clean, comfortable and had everything we needed. Stayed in rooms 1 and 2 on the ground floor. Room 1 is at the rear and so has no balcony. Room 2 is at the front and has a balcony which runs the length of the chalet. Both rooms were warm and cosy. The breakfast was continental style with a hot option provided on request every day. If you have morning ski lessons you may have to wolf it down as its not ready till after 8 am. Afteroon tea was a welcome sight after a day on the slopes. The evening meal was a treat. Three courses of gastro pub type menus ( beef bourginion, roast pork, tartifflette, Moroccan chicken to name but some of the meals). If children didn't fancy theses then Sylvan was happy to cook alternative options. Wine was provided with the meal and topped up before dishes were cleared away.

The nightlife for us consisted of chatting with our fellow guests and heading to bed early, but there's a few bars that stay open till the early hours if you have the energy. There is a magical path that leads from outside the Chalet door to La Rosière (The Narnia Path), which is lit all night and great for a stroll or a bit of sledge dragging!

The small niggles we had were that it would be nice to have the menu in advance so as not to double up at lunchtime and that the rooms at the front warmer than at rear, the waiting time in Chamberry airport was excessive as we were on a later flight to other passengers and ther is nothing to do there. Otherwise this was a perfect holiday. We want to come back next year!

Room Tip: Rooms 1 2 3 are on the ground floor. 4 5 6 on the second floor. You might hear a bit of noise from...

We stayed at Chalet Le Kitz with Crystal Ski during half term (February 2014). My wife and I had room 3 which was OK though it would have been better if it had been a bit larger (we noticed that French chalets tend to be smaller than Austrian ones). My Kids (13 & 14) stayed in room 4 which was fine for them, but older guests might have found the stairs to the beds a little steep.

The walk to the slopes is a good 10-15 minutes, but we did find a short cut through the trees back to the chalet.

The resort itself is small but ideal for beginners and family groups.

Stayed in chalet le Kitz for one week, amazing service, very friendly, great food, and ski slopes nearby and easy access to Italy. Hannah, our chalet host, was amazing and catered to our every need......great food, friendly service, nothing was too much trouble. We also got involved in a quiz at a local bar one evening, and played games in the chalet at night. Such a fun time, not to mention great skiing in all types of weather, both beautiful sunshine and freezing whiteouts!!!! We went as a couple and everyone else in the chalet was great company. Would go again.

My girlfriend and I stayed in room 4 of Chalet Stelvio for a week which sleeps 10. We booked the 'finest' package through Crystal which included the hot tub and sauna, free flowing wine throughout dinner and a 5 course fancy meal.
On arrival we were greeted by our host Tom who helped us with our bags to our room. Room 4 was split over 2 levels with our bedroom being up a very steep flight of stairs. We had our own shower and sink but the toilet was on the landing and was shared- luckily our fellow guests said that the toilet could be ours to use solely as they had their own within their rooms (2 & 3).

Tom was a brilliant host, helped out by Sylvin throughout the week. We had the most amazing 5 course dinners, lovely breakfasts and a freshly baked cake for when we returned in the afternoon. The chalet was always kept clean and Tom worked hard to meet every guests expectations.
Room 4 seemed to be absolutely boiling upstairs in the bedroom compartment so we usually kept our balcony door open during the night which helped slightly.
My only criticism would be the towels - for a finest chalet we only got 1 towel for both the shower and hot tub, the towel itself was quite small and was only changed once throughout the week but this shouldn't put you off. The location was good, 5-10 minute walk to a main chair lift and a 10 min walk to La Rosiere centre.

We just returned from Chalet Cervinia which is 1 of 4 Crystal Chalets in this block. We had the most fantastic time at this resport and Chalet.
To start with the Chalet is perfect, we were a family of 10, so we had the place to ourselves. The Crystal site does advise about the stairs to the upper room and they are right. It's a bit of a climb but my wife and i liked it as it kept the kids out!!
Now for the service. We had the best service we could have wished for from Lindsay and Silvan. They attended to our every need and nothing was too much trouble. The food they served was always spot on including catering for the 4 children early and with something they loved. Fresh baked pastry every morning and cakes in the afternoon were excellent.
The hot tub and sauna add that perfect pamper to what is a great Chalet.
Whatever we needed from food to help with bookings or advise was there. Silvan kept our kids entertained all week. The Chalet hosts from either of the other Chalets popped in to borrow things but they were always very nice and joined into our fun all week. They did not like other reviewers ever make us feel like they were taking over the place. In fact their occasional visits were good fun and welcomed with our banter.
The resort is a very family friendly ski base for beginners and our 6 new skiers out of our group all loved it so much they are already looking at next winters booking.
The village is expensive but so are all French resorts at the moment. The two villages are with easy walking of this Chalet which makes it perfect to get around. If you dont want to walk the local free bus picks up and drops within 50 yards.
Ski school pickup outside the ski locker every morning and would even drop back if required. Evolution 2 was the ski school used and they kept both adults and kids entertained and even the little one could not wait each morning to get on the bus.

All in all our family are lloking to return to both the resort and the Chalet, mostly because of the great service we got from Lindsay. She worked really hard and we were all sad to say goodbye.

If you are looking for a family ski holiday then i can't recommend this enough, its perfect.

Had a great holiday here in March 2013. This was my first chalet holiday and from this experience would deinitly book a chalet holiday again! The crystal rep was very friendly and useful when wanting to book lessons etc.

Our room (room 4)was probably not the best in the chalet but it was spacious and the chalet staff clean as often as you would like them too. Window in the sleeping area doesn't open so even with the window at the bottom of the stairs open it was boiling at night. No room keys- not an issue for us but worth noting.

Our chalet hosts Jordan and Anna were great- they would cook eggs however you wanted them in a morning, with a hot option always available as well as bread and cereals. The afternoon cakes were always delicious and the 3 course evening meals were fantastic. Our chalet really did test the claim of unlimited wine! My only criticism would be that the portion sizes of the mains could be a little bigger- fine for me but the men were always enquiring if there were and seconds.

The boot room is shared with the other Crystal chalets in the complex and is large with headed boot racks. I was a little concerned about the amount of times I found that the door hadn't been shut properly- I raised this with the manager who said she would grt the maintenance guy to have a look at the lock.

Right next to the chalet is a tree lined, streetlight lit path to la Rosiere which is really handy and very pretty.

Travelling as a couple, we didn't know what to expect of a 12 person but there was a mixture of groups and couples and everyone was great- meal times were always a good laugh.

Boarders- the drag lift over to Italy is a nightmare!! But we found the weather way better over there so don't be put off, just know what to expect.

Room Tip: Room 4 has an ensuite shower and sink but the toilet is on the corridor. Stairs up to the sleeping a...

Did exactly what it said on the tin. Staff were very friendly, we had other great guests in the chalet, but looking into next door the guests looked really boring. We were in the Chalet Le Hahnenkamm and Caddy, Alex and Anna made us feel very welcome.

Meals were prompt, the food was good and the hosts went out of their way to help us throughout our stay.

As for La Rosiere itself I probably won't go back. It is a bit of a small ski area and not particulaly challenging. The lifties also don't seem to have a sense of urgency when opening lifts and the pistes were not fantastically groomed.
