Dear MrandMrsPanda
Gosh, many thanks for your kind wonderful review, it is much valued. We remember you well and it is indeed lovely to hear that we so positively contributed to the start of your Outer Hebrides holiday. Grandson Henry sends his regards and wants to know if you remember his nick name of Two Swords, just in case one sword got broken? Yes, his message doesn’t mean too much to me, but perhaps it does to you; please take care and see you again soon.

We have visited this amazing place before, the hotel is in a fantastic position overlooking a sandy beach. It has recently undergone a beautiful renovation. The food as always was amazing, it's the best seafood I have eaten and the desserts were fabulous. The staff always provide an attentive and personal service that makes you feel very welcome and well looked after. I think it is great value for money and I personally would be happy to pay more!! We will be back.

Room Tip: Pay more for a sea view, you won't regret it

Not Cheap but we had a great stay - obviously helped by some great dry and sunny weather. The location and situation of the hotel is awesome and unique. The beach/sea view rooms are adequate comfortable but not luxury - they are clean and the food served at the hotel was excellent . The breakfast is big and hearty - the fresh fish dishes were simply brilliant and the sights and views from the dining room and residents lounge are breathtaking.

Lack of Wifi is an issue but this is a get away from it all sort of place - the staff are extremely helpful and friendly !

Trickle of a shower and very soft low beds were an issue for me as was the hefty price for DBB (dearer than the mainland for higher rating of accommodation)

Would I recommend this hotel ? - YES . Would I go back ? - YES .

Dear GlenLoan
It is always of value to get feedback from our guests and as they, in this case you GlenLoan have gone to both the time and trouble to review us, the least we can do is to try to answer the important points you have made. So firstly thank you very much for your kind and positive review but here goes as we try to answer the interesting matters that you have raised.
Lack of WIfI, this is not exactly right; there is free Wifi for all guests but it is restricted to the lounge and reception area. This has little to nothing to do with us but we are assured by our provider this is due to the signal strength and the fact that as this building is subject to extreme weather conditions (winds) in winter, our thick supporting walls limit the signal’s operating area.
A trickle shower, we are of course very sorry about that but dependent on when you were staying with us in May there was major work going on Barra’s water supply and it is quite possible this was the cause.
Soft low beds: Again this does not allow you to sleep easily and is unsatisfactory. Please next time let us know, we have a number of spare mattresses that are available to guests should they not like the one on their bed.
DBB price; This is a surprise to us as we don’t have a DBB price so we must conclude that what you mean is that our dinner prices are too high. To support our guests we do have two menus, a bar and a lounge menu where the dishes and prices vary quite considerably. As a matter of fact, we have no hotel rating at all so all mainland accommodation with a rating as low as 1 Star will technically beat us but, don’t let that fool you, we won the Best Hotel in the Outer Hebrides 2013 beating all comers including 3 and 4 Star hotels.
As to pricing, we are not cheap but there are a great number of factors that influence pricing of which we will briefly mention but two. We can only trade for 5 months per year against 12 for the majority of our Mainland competitors and all goods and basic food stuffs cost quite a bit more (sometimes up to 30%) due to transport and ferry costs. Should you be interested, we can easily demonstrate to you that our prices are both fair and competitive with other similar Hebridean business's.
Please come back and enjoy the fantastic Barra again, thank you and kind regards

The hotel is in a loverly location with direct access to the sandy beach over some rocks. Moving round inside the hotel can also involve many steps.
We spent two nights there on a bed, breakfast & evening meal basis.
The furniture in the bedroom was not in the first flush of youth ( Possibly 1960s ) but was in good order with not a piece of chip board in sight.
The flat screen TV had a wide selection of channels inc. BBC Radio 4 & 4Extra.
The hospitality tray was well stocked & replenished during the room service.
The hair dryer worked. We did not try the bath/shower but the water to the wash basin had excellent pressure.
Both the room & bathroom were cleaned to a high standard.
The evening meals were on a Table d' Hote basis. Both my wife & I were pleased with the spread of choice & the quality. Our party comprised of 39 people & the food came out surprising quickly.
The breakfast consisted of the the normal selection of fruit juice, cereal, toast etc. Plus a set cooked breakfast rather than a hot buffet.
Our tour company had listed the hotel as two star. As such it far exceeded our expectations.

Room Tip: Reaching the far rooms involves plenty a steps. Ground floor ceilings creak.

Dear Dave C
Many thanks for your most thought-provoking and detailed review, we found your appraisal very interesting and agree with you that there are a number of short stair sets within the hotel. This is primarily due to the fact that the hotel is build on the side of a hill and, in our longer-term plans we will install a small lift to help all of our guests that find stairs difficult.
We are delighted to read that we far exceeded your expectations but would point out that although your travel company had listed us as a 2 Star hotel, this is incorrect, we actually have no Stars at all. We have chosen to leave the VisitScotland Star scheme as we are firmly convinced that this quality assessment scheme favours large corporate city hotels and by doing this regularly misleads guests looking for something different in the family owned and operated countryside market. But that’s enough about the Quality Schemes; I have just avoided getting onto my hobby-horse and am in danger of boring you and anyone else reading this.
We see you are a very regular reviewer so thanks again for your constructive review, and travel on well

Our party went for dinner here - most aspects were 5 star, 1 aspect was 1 star. Firstly the location, even by high Barra standards, is outstanding. Secondly, most of the food was excellent - our entire party rated the starters and main course very highly. Personally, as a veggie who can cook, I am often underwhelmed by restaurant food - however the very simple-sounding "cheesy pasta" was exceptional.

The one negative was the attitude of the restaurant manager, who's attitude pretty much stank at first. We very nearly walked out, as he was rather rude both to us and about the hotel itself, but followed a conversation with the overall boss, he sorted our problem out and the restaurant manager seemed much better. The serving staff were very good. However given his obvious skill with food, he is undoubtedly an asset - but he HAS to be made aware that customer care and professionalism is just as necessary as culinary expertise. One plus side was that he was spot on when we asked him about which dishes to have.

The hotel manager made it up to us, he was most approachable, and we had an enjoyable evening.

So - location, hotel manager & food - 5 star. Restaurant manager - 5 star on food, 1 star on customer care. We would definitely go back despite the one negative!

Dear Molari
Thank you for this kind review, you won’t be surprised but we remember you and your lovely family well. Both Robert and I take responsibility for the mix up over your table and apologise for the less than satisfactory start to your family dinner.
You are very gracious to be so positive in your review as the mix up should never have happened; we can only be very pleased that you stayed on and so enjoyed our food.
As you have said, please come back, we would be delighted to serve you all again
