having been in venezuela for more than six weeks i came back to the plazamar hotel (family run) about five times.
every time the transfer driver (elias) was waiting for me and brought me back to the hotel even if it was at an ungodly hour. same goes for going to the airport.
everybody working here has been extremely helpful and welcoming.
the area of macuto is also safe and it is nice to walk on the beach, have a drink in one of the little venues, do people watching etc.
the bakery closeby has delicious bread, cakes and delicatessen.
buses to the next town full of life (miniature caracas withouth its dangers) is nice to visit and easy to get to by local bus.
to go to caracas for the day is also no problem from macuto. the local bus takes you to the metro station gato negro and from there you can reach the center easily.
all in all, being a female senior citizen, i can only recommend this hotel which also has hot water, is clean, has a/c, a terrace, and as mentioned before very friendly staff.
of course it is mandatory to make a reservation and confirm it !!!

PLAZAMAR

We stayed here 2x simply as a transit hotel (flying it into Caracas in the evening to fly out next AM). By all accounts, even lots of locals, told us not to stay in Caracas and it was simply too too dangerous. So happy to opt for this option as it was in a suburb, and apparently by the beach but we didn't go so that didnt matter.

What I can tell you it's a simple straightforward transit hotel. Functional and simple without any surprises or niceties. But don't expect nice, just basic. Towels are very small. Wifi is strong. Doors are thin. Shower area not separated from toilet and sink, and without a shower curtains you will get everything wet! Why the toilet paper is left outside.

Staff is nice. We got in at 630pm and really needed our laundry done, and they accommodated, getting a huge load done by 930pm and for only bs100 (depending on the every changing rate but for us about $3.

There is a fridge and computers by the reception as well. It's across from a plaza with lots of bird houses. And again close to the beach.

One great thing is they provide free airport transportation, which helps relieve the worry if getting into a sketchy taxi. Elias, our driver, was simply incredible. Our flight was delayed 7 hours so arrived at 2am and he patiently waited, was assuring and sounded as if it was no bother to him. On our 2nd arrival, we wanted to just pick up food and a bottle of wine to take back to the hotel to eat there, he offered suggestions, wanted be sure it was what we wanted, helped us order.....simply a gem. His English is quite good as well.

Also we left luggage here going off to the islands and that was safe and secure.

Its a transit hotel and if going for for purposes, its fine.

The hotel is very safe and near to the airport. The rooms are very basic but more or less clean. The most important is that the staff is very helpful. The guys were waiting for us at the airport at midnight. They changed us money at a good price. There is not breakfast but near the hotel there are a bakery. The people helped us to get to the bus station in Caracas and to buy tickets to Ciudad Bolivar.
On our way back they came to get us from the bus station at 5 a.m. The pick up service is not included in the hotel price.

We are 2 English girls travelling in South America and Caracas was our first stop, Hotel Plazamar welcomed us with open arms. The Manager Giovanna speaks very good English and all the staff especially Jimmy were fantastic and so helpful! Elias, the hotel driver (our Venezuelan papa) really made sure we felt safe and went out of his way to help us. Our flight was even delayed for nearly 3 hours and he was still there waiting to greet us, which was reassuring as we were worried we would be stranded!

We are so grateful for all the help and advice Hotel Plazamar gave us and would recommend this as a place to stay without a shadow of a doubt!
With the free internet, ensuite bathrooms and service with a smile you'd be a fool not to stay!

Chelle and Laura :) x

Room Tip: Rooms are nice and cool, but feel free to ask Jimmy for an extra blanket if it's chilly through...

Our stay at Plazamar started off badly, some language issues meant that the hotel didn´t organise a pick up for us from the airport (2am - not a great time to be arriving in an unsafe airport). When a lady at the airport rang and explained to them that we were expecting a pick up and we couldn´t withdraw money from the cash machine they pretty much said too bad get a taxi. After struggling to sort out money for a taxi at 2am (thank god for a nice Venezuelan lady who helped us), we finally arrived at the hotel at 4:20am. We were still charged a full night´s stay in our crappy room. (They did discount us to 200 per night (still double the amount quoted in Lonely Planet - pretty sure this was still more than the prostitutes and their johns using the hotel paid for a few hours).

The next day we tried to organise to go in to the bus station to get a bus to Merida in the evening. They made a play of trying to get hold of a taxi for us and said no one was available to get us to the bus station in time (it was 1pm and the bus was at 6pm). The taxi driver at the hotel picking up some other people for the bus station (who we later realised was some friend of theirs) said not to worry, buses leave every hour from 8am for Merida - I´ll take you first thing in the morning. So we were stuck at the dreadful hotel for another night.

The next morning we left for the bus station at 6am - arrived at the station to find that no buses go until the evening. i.e. the hotel and taxi guy lied to us so that he´d get as many fares in as possible! So we were stuck at the station for 12 hours if we still wanted to go to Merida. As we had so far found Caracas particularly unsavoury and we were now running out of time in venezuela we decided to get the hell out and head straight to colombia. So thanks to this crummy hotel we missed out on doing the stuff we wanted to do in Merida.

The hotel itself is not particularly nice: moldy, prison style bathroom, beds with some weird stains on the sheets, and a constant parade of prostitutes and their johns. It is definately a love motel, and not a very nice one.

The neighbourhood doesn´t really have anything going for it, we were warned it wasn´t very safe. The beach was disgusting (rubbish everywhere, dead fish heads lying around). There isn´t really anywhere to go to eat apart from a panaderia (bakery) a few blocks away. The food there was nice but expensive. No cash machines within safe walking distance of the hotel (we had to get money out at a cash machine for which we needed a taxi to drive to).
HAVE NO IDEA WHY LONELY PLANET WOULD RECOMMEND THIS PLACE!!!

After spending some time in the city, I decided to make my way out to Macuto. I had an excellent experience at this hotel. The staff are extremely honest and helpful. The rates are incredibly good - 180 for a small room with a double bed with no AC. The hotel is only a couple of minutes away from reasonably enjoyable beaches. Getting to and from Caracas is not too challenging - bus to/from Gato Negro, and then you're on the subway line.

If you're coming from Caracas, get to Gato Negro on the subway, get on one of the buses to Macuto (anywhere from 7 to 15 Bolivares depending on the bus), then get off when you see the beautiful church (San Bartoleme) to your left in Macuto.

We had tried another hotel for a night before flying out of Caracas; we much preferred this one. The airport pick-up worked perfectly and the hotel was clean and efficient. TV in the rom and free Internet. We were there on one of the last days of carnival and the beach (2min walk) was packed with people enjoying themselves. Our hotel, however, was very quiet. Thouroughly recommended.
