“Warm, welcoming and understated”

We were lucky to stay at La Porte Guillier for two nights in August 2013. We booked on-line after reading some lovely reviews and can honestly say it was one of our favourite places in France. Jangui is a perfect host and we felt truly at home in his space. Our room was romantic and airy, with a wonderful view of the square below. The decor is beautifully simple, with many interesting pieces of artwork and furniture. The town of Semur is picture-perfect. We loved wandering the narrow streets, exploring the ramparts and picnicking along the river under a tree-canopy in a rainstorm. Merci beaucoup Jangui!

We spent two happy nights here in August 2013.

Our room was large, comfortable, clean and quiet. Decoration is simple but attractive.

Jangui is a perfect host. We enjoyed chatting with him over breakfast and he knows everything about the area.

Semur is well worth a visit. This historic town is well preserved and has some great restaurants. We had an excellent dinner at la parenthese.

Semur is a good base for exploring the northern part of Burgundy. On the way from Paris we stopped in Auxerre and visited the beautiful cathedral. In the Semur area we visted the Abbey of Fontenay (a Unesco site) and the Chateau de Bussy-Rabutin (fantastic). You could easily spend several days visiting this area.

Highly recommended.

My wife and l were cycling along the Burgundy Canal and had decided to make a detour to Semur. This turned out to be a brilliant idea. This small town is a gem. We had a wonderful couple of nights here in early September. Our bedroom was large light and airy and the view from it was over the medieval square which our building (so wonderfully restored) was indeed part of. Please note the actual entrance is on the same street and about 4 doors along to the left of the tourist office Jangui, our very friendly host who speaks good English, provided us with good coffee, croissant and some wonderful breads at breakfast. He recommended several restaurants we particularly liked the Le Saint Vernier and went there both evenings. We strongly recommend La Porte Guillier

Room Tip: We had a room on the top floor overlooking the square. l would imagine they are all equally good

My mother and I recently spent 2 nights at La Porte Guillier and it was absolutely charming. The property is perfectly located and has been lovingly restored to bring back all the original architectural details while effortlessly remaining modern and fresh. Our room had high ceilings and lots of light streaming in through the huge windows (with shutters so we could choose to sleep in if we wanted), a lovely bathroom with thermostatic shower, and a comfortable sitting area. Breakfast was très français in its simplicity and deliciousness, and the owner was incredibly warm and kind. We know Semur-en-Auxois very well, so we chatted with him about all its changes over the years, new restaurants and shops, new things to see, and of course all the lovely things that remain the same, like his spectacular view over the cobblestoned pedestrian area.

We know Semur so well because we own a vacation rental in town, and we stayed at La Porte Guillier instead of our gîte because we needed to visit when our own house was booked. I am so glad we did. I often get requests from people who just want to stay a few nights (our summer minimum is a week) and are looking for a hotel in town, and I had always felt that there were many good choices but no clear favorite.

Well, not anymore. If you're coming to Semur-en-Auxois for a few days, stay here. Book early, because there are only 3 rooms in this chambre d'hotes. It's the best combination of location, amenities and value out of all the hotels and B&Bs I know of in Semur. And I know Semur. This is a special place!

We couldn't have dreamed of a better place to stay in Semur-en-Auxois, and I wish we had stayed longer than just the one night. It was in a perfect location, with part of the B&B straddling above the Cote d'Or arch, which is a village landmark and the entrance to the oldest part of the town. Initially, it was difficult finding the place, but it's such a small town that we asked a shop owner to direct us (also a little challenging because she didn't speak english, nor did seemingly anyone else). But it was simply lovely. The room was nicely decorated and had a great view of the courtyard, part of the cathedral, and the old rooftops of town. The owners were also very kind and gracious hosts. They invited my husband and I into their private chambers for a simple breakfast with freshly squeezed orange juice and coffee/tea before we embarked on the day. The owners spoke a little english, so we were able to converse a little bit. Overall, this town and B&B really stick out as one of the highlights of our France trip. I would certainly go back in a heartbeat!
