My wife and I recently went to Costa Rica for our honeymoon and chose Ocotal Beach Resort as our beach side hotel. BIG MISTAKE!!!! Upon arrival we noticed that the hotel was nearly abandoned, there was very little staff and the entire property was in disrepair. The lady at the front desk was very nice and the views of Ocotal beach were great, but those were the only good parts. after we finally found our room "the honeymoon suite" we were amazed as to how bad it was. First off it was like stepping back into the 70's, it was very sparsely decorated with very cheap worn out furnishings. But then we looked down, The Floors were covered in what appeared to be mouse droppings, There was dust and balls of hair and filth everywhere. The bathroom was disgusting to say the least, there was dried old soap scum all over the tub, the sinks were adorned with towel animals shaped from dingy brown and yellow stained towels, there were more mouse droppings all over the sinks and vanity, the toilet was dusty and dirty, there was dried urine on the floors and smeared blood on the walls!!!! and all this for over $200 a night!!! The owners and management of this place should be ashamed. After we saw this disgusting terrible excuse for a room we went back to the front desk and told the very nice and understanding attendant all about the problems with the room. She apologized and offered to show us another room as they couldn't have the room cleaned because there were no house keepers on staff after 4:00pm. A nice employee then took us to see another room that was a little cleaner but smelled like raw sewage. We then decided it was time to find a new place to stay. The lady at the front desk was very helpful again and guaranteed us that we'd get a full refund. She helped us find a room at another hotel nearby and once agin apologized. All though she guaranteed us a full refund she was unable to give us a refund right then because it had to be done through a different department, so we went on and just believed here. Unfortunately the management doesn't keep their word and we are still battling with them to get our refund that they are now refusing to give us. This terrible disgusting out dated Hotel needs to be leveled and sold to someone who will do justice to the beautiful property. i can't possibly go on enough about how bad Ocotal Beach Resort is. It is quite literally the worst hotel on earth. DO NOT STAY HERE EVER!!!!!!!

Room Tip: Stay Away From This Hotel!!!!!!

This is a resort with highest potential. But they have a long way to go to reach the 4 stars they claim to have. The staff did all there best to give us the best service that was possible. Thank you all for that.

The resort has a astonishing view over Ocotal Beach. This view is available from almost all of the 60 room (those which weren't' closed).

There is three pools on the resort which was poorly cleaned (1 of 4 days). The gym had an great view over the ocean but looked as it haven't been used for years. The gym was dirty, machines were broken or fixed with duck tape. The feeling was the same for the rest of the buildings and rooms and pools. Things that's broken aren't fixed.

I would rate the hotel as bad if haven't been for the staff that put all their effort to serve there guests. They are understaffed to be able to keep the standard at the best.

This is the 4th time I have stayed here over the last 15 years.
It is an incredible location situated on a hill overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
The natural wildlife never ceases to amaze me, as well as the plants and topography. Truly a slice of heaven for the sheer beauty.
If you are a diver this is a must do location. The visibility is not always the best. 25' - 50' is about average, but the quantity and diversity of sea life is spectacular.
I would say that the hotel would benefit from a freshening up, but the staff, food & location are hard to beat.

As a party of six, we recently spent a week at the Ocotal Beach Resort. If your idea of a great resort experience is the look-of-luxury and like-new facilities, perhaps the Ocotal is not for you. But if you value an unbelievably beautiful setting, together with staff who don't merely "serve" you, but rather are warm, open, and caring in addressing your needs, then you may be as delighted with your experience as we were. While there five of us sought open-water scuba certification through their dive shop. Our diving instructor, Jairo Grueso, was extraordinary; I can't imagine a better teacher with whom to learn scuba. All five of us entered upon this endeavor with our own apprehensions, and one of us was particularly hesitant, bordering on a phobia of water. With sensitivity, patience, and persistence, Jairo nurtured each of us and instilled confidence. All five of us successfully completed the course of instruction and are now certified. If you are looking for the perfect place to learn scuba, the Ocotal may be it.

I took my wife and 4 friends to Ocotal to take their open water dives for Scuba certification. The instructor, Jairo Grueso was beyond great!! His patients and teaching skills were excellent. His attention to details built confidence in the students and they all passed their certification.
I have been diving for 50+ years and found the diving excellent. My only negatives were the visibility at times was only 15 to 20 meters and there was little flora. There were lots of fish and a wide variety.
The resort itself is showing it's age a little but it is well maintained.
One of my friends celebrated his birthday there and had a wonderful experience with the staff helping us with the surprise!
There was wildlife all over the place with interesting sightings everyday. The views from about 100 meters above the ocean were great.
The staff was great and always helpful!

The staff was great and always helpful.

Room Tip: The 400 rooms have jungle, ocean views, and a very nice pool very near by.
